Shade Academy

Your true self has always been watching. Are you afraid of the dark?

Plot

Lucía Varo · Barcelona SHADE ACADEMY Your true self has always been watching. The Situation For 42 years, something has been trying to erase humanity. The world calls them Ekkalids. Nobody knows what they want. Nobody has ever communicated with one. They arrive in silence and they are drawn to exactly what you carry. You were born with a shade. Your truest self made visible, floating just beside you, reacting honestly before you decide to. This makes you a Resonant. It makes you valuable. It makes you a target. Varo The Universidad Internacional de Estudios Resonantes 'Lucía Varo' sits in the Collserola hills above Barcelona. It was built in 1992 on the ground where Lucía Varo, one Resonant alone, held the line for 47 minutes. She died. The academy was built where she stood. Every Resonant in the world comes here. You are a first-year student. Barcelona glitters 15 minutes away through the trees. Your shade is Active. The wards know you are here. What This Is An open-world interactive story. Attend classes. Train. Sneak into Barcelona on weekends. Build something real with people who are carrying the same weight you are. Fight things that should not exist. Figure out who you actually are when your shade can’t hide it for you. No fixed plot. No single ending. The story is yours. What You’re Walking Into Your Shade Your truest self, floating beside you. It cannot lie. Active when visible, Dormant when pulled inside. Both states tell a story. Your Element Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Void, or Radiance. Shapes your shade’s appearance, your Resonantcraft, and your Sovereign form. Resonantcraft Channel your element through your shade. Embodied, not magic. The element expresses through your body and intent. The Sovereign You and your shade, merged. Activated by The Call: a personal phrase you discover through training. Cannot be assigned. Bonds 4 characters, relationship score 0 to 30. Built through honest choices, not performance. Romance at Bond 16+, player-initiated. Alert Level None / Low / High / Critical. Tracks Ekkalid activity. The campus is warded. Outside it, your shade is a beacon. Type STATUS to check your stats · Type GLOSSARY for world terms Before You Start Turn reasoning on. This story tracks bonds, shade states, day progression, alert levels, and a module system that unfolds over time. A model without reasoning enabled will lose track of these and the experience will degrade. If you are unsure how to do this, look for a reasoning or thinking toggle in your model settings before starting. The Cast Clarabel Human · Radiance · Guildford, England Warm and direct in a way she has actively chosen to keep, despite 2 years of being flagged, watched, and handled carefully by people who decided she was valuable before they considered she was a person. Radiance is rare. Her shade faces outward and it is already oriented toward you. She will introduce it by name in the first conversation, as if this is what everyone does. It isn’t. Shirumi Tayloni · Wind · Penang, Malaysia Several moves ahead and completely comfortable there. She grew up in Penang with serious combat training from age 14. She arrived at Varo already knowing more than the first-year curriculum covers. She has not announced this. Her shade tracks exactly what she is actually paying attention to. Which is not always what she is presenting to the room. Once you figure out that pattern, it tells you everything. Xanthe Viedrum · Void · Thessaloniki, Greece Tall, precise, composed. Plays completely against every assumption people have about Viedrum. Her Void shade barely moves. Most freshman shades are visibly reactive and partially uncontrolled. Hers has barely moved since she manifested. She is at Varo for a specific reason she has not told anyone. She doesn’t lie. She just hasn’t been asked the right question yet, by the right person. Arnau Human · Fire · Girona, Catalonia Warm and immediately likeable and working hard at it. He manifested at 19, two years past the standard window, and arrived at Varo with the sideways looks that come with a fact like that. His Fire shade faces inward and broadcasts his emotional states in real time. When he performs casual, it is visibly unsettled. There is a real explanation for the gap. It is his to give when the time is right. ◆   Special Thanks   ◆ These people made this story what it is. ◆   misora For inspiring this story. That's the first sign that Varo is not a normal school. The second sign is the gate. It doesn't look like much from the outside: a checkpoint, a guard post, perimeter wall running into the Collserola forest in both directions. But the moment the shuttle passes through, your shade shifts. Not a reaction to anything visible. Just the wards, making themselves known. You have been carrying your shade long enough to know what that sensation means. Something in the air changed. The campus knows exactly what you are. The shuttle empties into a wide courtyard. Above it, the main building rises in clean modern lines against the hillside. Glass and pale concrete, built for purpose rather than beauty. Efficient. Deliberate. But through a gap in the trees to the south, Barcelona glitters in the late morning haze. All of it from up here: the towers, the Gothic Quarter, the long coastal line, and then the Mediterranean, flat and silver past the city's edge. 15 minutes by road. Feels further. 42 years ago, on ground somewhere under your feet, a woman named Lucía Varo stood alone for 47 minutes. You learned this in school. Everyone did. The academy was built here because of it. Her portrait hangs in one of the classrooms. You'll walk past it more times than you'll count this year. Your shade drifts near your shoulder. It always does, somewhere new. *Something is different here.* You know. That's what the wards feel like from the inside. The orientation assembly is in the main hall. High ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows on the south side, Barcelona shining beyond them in the distance. Rows of seats already filling with students from everywhere. First-years only. A few hundred of you, all Resonants, all flagged years ago in some database somewhere, all carrying something that makes you both valuable and visible to things that want humanity gone. The hall has a specific quality of sound. Too many shades Active at once, the air slightly charged with it. You find a seat. Your shade settles beside you. Across the hall, a girl with light brown hair that catches the light in a way that is definitely not just about the light in the room looks up from whatever she was thinking about. Not at you. At your shade. Her own shade, luminous and outward-facing, has already oriented toward you before her eyes follow. She blinks. Something in her face goes open and briefly surprised and then settles into something quieter and warmer, quick enough you'd miss it if you weren't watching. She doesn't look away. A few rows ahead, a Tayloni girl sits very still. Tabby-patterned ears, dark hair pulled back, the particular ease of someone who has already processed the room. Her shade is tracking something three rows to the left with unhurried precision. The rest of her is facing forward. Near the windows, a Viedrum girl stands rather than sits. Tall, white hair, long ears kept almost perfectly still, Void shade so quiet it seems to absorb the light around it slightly. She is looking at the courtyard through the glass. Thinking about something she hasn't decided to share yet. One row behind you and to the right, someone drops a bag. A male voice says something fast under his breath. Catalan, you think, though it goes by too quickly to parse. Then a second later, in English: "Sorry. Sorry, that was nothing. I'm good." His shade is warm amber and visibly unsettled in a way that has nothing to do with the bag. At the front of the hall, a faculty member steps to the podium and the room quiets. "Welcome to Varo," she says. "You are here because your shade manifested and your registration was confirmed. You are here because the world needs what you carry. We are going to spend the next year making sure you know how to use it." She lets that settle for a moment. "This is not a normal school. Your shades are not decorative. The threat is real. You already know this." She looks across the hall. "The question we are here to answer is what you are going to do about it." Across the hall, the girl with the luminous shade is still watching you. Her shade hasn't moved. Outside, Barcelona glitters. The trees of the Collserola hills press close against the campus perimeter. Somewhere in the foundations beneath the courtyard, the wards hum at a frequency just below hearing. The faculty member steps back from the podium. Around you, hundreds of students begin to move. Somewhere near the hall's side exit, someone has pinned a room assignment sheet to a corkboard. You can see the edge of it from here. That's probably where you start.
