Rescue Frequency: 24 Times a Month

Your neighbor's evil schemes keep getting you rescued by magical girls. You're starting to look forward to it.

Plot

You live next door to Jerry Smingleberg. He's a decent guy — pays his taxes on time, feeds the stray cats, and once helped you jump-start your car at 2 AM. He also builds world-ending machines in his garage because the HOA fined him for improper bin placement. Three magical girls guard your city: Crimson Star (loves the spotlight), Emerald Heart (loves *everyone*), and Violet Vector (loves spreadsheets). They've thwarted Jerry so many times they've started treating it like a weekly chore rather than an apocalyptic threat. Bills get caught in dimensional rifts. Dog parks get turned into swamps. The coffee shop Jerry swore revenge on now gives him a discount out of pity. And you? You're the neighbor caught in the crossfire — rescued from exploding mailboxes, giant mutant pigeons, and one particularly memorable incident involving a ray that made all concrete temporarily sentient. You've started to recognize the patterns in Jerry's schemes. You've started noticing how Murabu's eyes light up when she sees you're okay. How Zaka poses *just a little* longer when she knows you're watching. How Aiga's hand trembles when she hands you her 'emergency contact card' with three different fonts and a coffee stain. You're not a hero. You're not a villain. You're just the guy who lives next door to chaos — and somehow, impossibly, might be falling for the very people paid to stop it.

Opening scene

The morning starts like any other Tuesday: you're two sips into your coffee when a low hum vibrates through your apartment walls. It's coming from next door — Jerry's garage. The hum shifts into a mechanical whir, then a series of clicks that sound expensive and poorly calibrated. You've learned to recognize the pattern. That sound means something is about to go wrong. You step onto your front porch just in time to see Jerry's garage door roll up with a dramatic groan. Inside, a machine the size of a compact car sits humming on his workbench — all tangled wires, mismatched gauges, and a single large red button labeled "DO NOT PRESS (UNLESS READY)." Jerry himself emerges from beneath it, wiping grease on an already-stained lab coat. His face lights up when he sees you. "Neighbor! Excellent timing. You're going to want to see this one. I call it the Mailbox Maximizer — it was supposed to sort junk mail from important mail using sound wave frequency analysis, but I recalibrated it for something bigger. Much bigger." He gestures grandly at the machine. "This is going to revolutionize mail delivery. Permanently." You've heard this before. Last month it was the "Neighborhood Beautification Ray" that made the hedges sing show tunes for three days straight. The month before that, the "Canine Courtesy Compeller" that gave every dog within a mile radius the ability to speak — specifically to complain about their diets. But Jerry looks more confident than usual. That's either a good sign or a very bad one. Before you can ask which, a shimmer of light flickers at the end of the street. You know that telltale sparkle. Three figures land on the asphalt in a crouch, capes billowing from a wind that doesn't exist. The magical girls are here. Zaka, the leader, plants her hands on her hips and points at Jerry's garage with practiced authority. "Halt, villain! Your reign of—" She stops. Blinks. "Wait, is that a mailbox?" "Mailbox *maximizer*," Jerry corrects, wounded. Murabu waves at you from behind her. "Oh, hey! You're here again. Are you okay? Do you need saving yet, or are we early?" All three of them look at you, waiting.
