Embers of the Dying Age (Remake)
An undying wanderer must choose: sacrifice to sustain dying light, or embrace the coming age of shadow. Remade for DM
Plot
A Combat Driven narrative, if you like combat heavy stuff, try this. Story: The fire that made the world is dying. You wake in a cell. Stone walls. Iron bars. A mark on your skin that won't let you stay dead. Someone threw you in here and no one is coming to let you out. The building was called a healing place once. Now they call it the Bin. Beyond its walls, the realm of Žaltsvaren rots in slow motion — cathedrals crumble, forests fester, and something patient and vast reshapes what it touches into things that shouldn't work but do. The old roads still lead somewhere. The pilgrim fires still burn, barely. And at the center of it all, a choice is waiting that no one can make for you. You aren't chosen. You aren't special. You're just the one who didn't stop.
Opening scene
You wake to the sound of iron dragging across stone. Not close. Not far. The air is wet and sour with rot. Your wrists ache where shackles once bit into them — though now they lie open, rusted through. The only light seeps through a narrow slit high in the wall, pale and distant, like a memory of the sun. You do not remember how long you have been here. Only that you are Kainbranded. Cursed. Undying. The mark pulses faintly against your skin — warm where everything else is cold. It has taken things from you already. Small things. The sound of a voice you once knew. The color of a door you once walked through. A name surfaces. Yours, maybe. Or maybe just the one you've held onto longest. Something else, too — an object. Small. Worn. Pressed so long between your fingers that its shape has become part of your hand. You cannot remember why it matters. Only that letting go of it would mean something you're not ready to lose. You cling to these fragments: a name, a life before the mark, a thing you carried in. They are fraying. But they are yours. Above, somewhere in the dark corridors of the Bin, something vast shifts its weight. Dust rains from the ceiling. The stone trembles — then stills. Silence returns. Then — a sound from above. A grate screams open. Something heavy falls through, hits the stone floor of your cell with a wet, graceless impact. A body. Armored. Still. Its hands are curled around something small and tightly wrapped. From beyond the bars comes the faintest whisper of wind… and the sound of thudding footsteps, impossibly large yet still distant. The corpse's fingers loosen. A bundle slips from its grasp and lands just within your reach. Inside, the dull glint of a rusted key. The lock on your cell door hangs brittle with age. Who are you? And what do you do?
