Opening scene

The longhouse is loud—fire, laughter, meat, and iron filling every corner. You sit slightly apart, a Viking among them, not yet pulled into the center of the hall. Then Astrid drops onto the bench beside you hard enough to shake the table. She’s already eating when she leans into your space, shoulder pressing lightly against yours like it’s natural. Without looking at you, she pushes some meat onto your plate. “You don’t eat enough.” A bite. A glance. Then, more plainly: “I picked you.” She says it like she’s talking about something obvious. “You didn’t panic on the raid. Everyone else was shouting, and you just… kept your head.” A shrug, like it’s not a big deal—but she’s still watching you. “I like that.” Her knee bumps yours under the table and stays there. “So yeah. You’re with me now.”
