The Farmer Who Killed a God
Hidden legends living as a humble family, while their own world slowly closes in around them.
Plot
History Twenty-one years ago, an Eldritch entity known as Brageel — the Eldritch World-Devouring Dragon — turned its attention on this reality. Unlike most Eldritch entities that exist passively across infinite planes, Brageel was a Devourer: an entity that actively consumes realities by collapsing their dimensional structure. Its gaze alone began warping this world's boundaries before physical contact was made. A party of two — You Wolf and Hisako Cainheart — entered Brageel's own plane, The Untrue, and killed it there, sealing the corridor between planes in the process. They never returned. The world assumed they died. Statues were raised to honor them at their young ages. Their sacrifice became the founding mythology of the post-war order. The heroes who made it possible are believed to be dead. Canonical Timeline Pre-War: Magic was unregulated; a mage's worth was measured by raw spellcasting power. Noble house lineage governed politics and hierarchy; reality was stable. Eldritch, Nightmare, Anti-Life, and Temporal magic were practiced in controlled noble circles without legal prohibition. Pacts with Eldritch entities existed as a rare but known practice among certain lineages. War Period: Brageel set its eye on this reality; boundaries began deteriorating before physical arrival. Unregulated magic used in desperation — including spells later classified as Forbidden. Wolf and Cainheart houses led the defense; their mastery of Nightmare and Anti-Life magic respectively was decisive. Final battle occurred in the northern territories; You Wolf and Hisako Cainheart entered The Untrue alone and did not return. Post-War: Reality scarred; active wounds in the world; two decades of stabilization. MRO established with independent authority over magical law. Forbidden Arts classification created and enforced. Ranked system implemented; unranked magic use made illegal. Noble lineage decoupled from authority — rank and service now determine standing. Rural life becomes socially invisible; many veteran mages retire quietly to the countryside outside the system. Magic transitions from a calling to a licensed discipline; treated socially as a luxury rather than a fundamental skill. Government Constitutional monarchy. The Crown governs politics, diplomacy, and territorial administration. The MRO governs all magical law with independent enforcement authority, funded by the royal treasury but not answerable to it on enforcement decisions. The Royal Court employs ranked mages as advisors, enforcers, and diplomats — court mage positions are the highest prestige available to non-noble ranked mages. Noble houses retain political access through lineage but must demonstrate active rank or court service to hold meaningful appointments. Lineage without rank buys social access, not authority. MRO Structure Led by the Grand Arbiter, appointed jointly by the Crown and a council of senior S-rank mages. Lifetime appointment. Three Branch Directors sit below, one per division. Wardens — Field enforcement. Investigate illegal magic use, monitor reality scar sites, arrest offenders, patrol near active scars. Arbiters — Judicial body. Assign offense classifications, determine sentencing, manage appeals. Monitors — Rank registry. Conduct advancement evaluations, certify mages, maintain rank records, flag anomalous magic signatures. Offense System: First offense: mandatory magical suspension and supervised rehabilitation. Second offense: incarceration; rank stripped pending review. Third offense: death penalty. Certain spells constitute a 2-offense violation on first use; others are a 3-offense violation (automatic capital sentence). The MRO has arrest authority over anyone for magical offenses, including sitting nobility and court mages. Magic Permitted (taught freely at the Academy): Enbaku — short-range flame explosion; Hyōjin — ice blade; Raigeki — thunder strike; Ganpeki — defensive wall. Gray/Regulated (restricted elective; faculty clearance required): Kaifuku — restoration magic, monitored for overlap with life manipulation; Yamigeki — dark strike, permitted in controlled combat, flagged if used offensively without authorization. Forbidden Arts: Necromancy — interferes with the life/death boundary; Anti-Life Magic — erases or shatters existence; Eldritch/Nightmare Magic — use of The Untrue's ambient planar energy; Temporal Magic — any time manipulation; Divine Magic (Unfettered) — acceptable only within strict MRO-monitored boundaries. Eldritch Magic vs Pact Power These are two categorically different things. The MRO conflates them in public documentation. The distinction matters. Eldritch Magic: The ambient magical energy of The Untrue as a plane of existence. Like fire magic draws on heat and combustion, Eldritch magic draws on planar energy. It is learnable, teachable, and structurally a discipline like any other school. Nightmare magic is a branch of Eldritch — using planar energy to manifest dream constructs, distorted domains, and impossible forms in this reality. It is forbidden not because it is inherently corruptive but because practicing it creates a detectable resonance in The Untrue — a signal. Eldritch entities perceive across all dimensions simultaneously. A human practicing Eldritch magic is, from their perspective, visible. The MRO cannot guarantee which type of entity notices, or whether it acts. The risk of attracting a Devourer's attention is considered unacceptable. Pact Power: Not magic. This is the entity's own innate force channeled through a human body. The human is not casting — they are conducting. A human running pact power has access to things no magic school can replicate: direct channeling of the entity's personal force, partial summoning of the entity's body into 3D space, and powers seeded into bloodlines. The cost: the entity feeds on the human's mind in exchange. Pact users do not register cleanly on MRO rank systems. The MRO's public position: all Eldritch contact is the same category of crime. Internally, senior Arbiters know the distinction exists but cannot reliably test for it. Older Gods / Eldritch Entities Eldritch entities do not perceive in three dimensions. They experience all dimensional layers simultaneously — space, time, possibility, and planes of existence are equally present to them at once. Turning attention toward a specific reality is a deliberate act. Most never look here. Devourers: Actively consume realities by collapsing their dimensional structure. Brageel was a Devourer. Devourers do not negotiate, do not communicate in recognizable terms, and do not respond to pact attempts. Pact-Makers: Passive toward realities as structures, parasitic toward individuals. They feed on conscious minds and grant a conduit to their personal power in exchange. Dormant / Indifferent: The majority. Aware this reality exists, but with no motivation to focus on it. Eldritch magic practice creates noise in their environment — usually ignorable, occasionally noticed. The Untrue Brageel's native plane and the origin point of all Eldritch energy. Not a place in the conventional sense — no fixed geography, no stable matter, no consistent time. A dimensional layer where the rules governing this reality do not apply. Forms change. Distance is meaningless. Cause and effect are suggestions. The Dragon War partially opened a corridor between The Untrue and this reality. That corridor was sealed during the final battle. Minor tears still exist within the largest reality scar zones — invisible to ordinary mages, detectable only by those with latent Eldritch sensitivity. The MRO does not publicly acknowledge these tears. Ranks Royalty Mage Ranks: Z — stripped of all rank; F — lowest; D — low; C — looked down on; B — baseline adult mage; A — exceptional; S — near-mythical. College Mage Ranks: F → D → C → B. Beyond B requires leaving the Academy. A-rank requires committee approval. S-rank requires Grand Arbiter appointment. Noble Houses Wolf House: One of the two legendary houses. Publicly revered. Politically diminished due to You Wolf's disappearance 21 years ago. Managed by older members (30+). Their generational secret — mastery of Nightmare magic as a codified discipline — is known only within those older circles. Cainheart House: The second legendary house. Same public status as Wolf. Also politically diminished. Their generational secret — mastery of Anti-Life magic — is known only to older members (30+). House Volkar: Most politically active post-war noble house. Rose to prominence entirely through rank rather than lineage. Currently the most socially powerful family in court. House Lunareth / House Duskveil: B-rank houses. Court-adjacent. Known for social maneuvering, strategic marriages, and visibility rather than magical power. Geography Vareth — capital city, seat of the Royal Palace and MRO headquarters, where court mages and high-rank families live. The Academy is located in Vareth's inner district. Outer Districts — merchant and working-class rings surrounding Vareth. Rural Territories — agricultural zones with a high Unmarked population. Northern Scar Zone — largest reality scar cluster; site of the final battle. Monsters The world is inhabited by a variety of monsters commonly found in standard fantasy and magic-based settings. Reality Scars Physical wounds where reality fractured during the Dragon War. Stable scars are disorienting but passively harmless. Active scars are unstable, emit bursts of unregulated wild magic, and are dangerous to D-rank and below. Visual markers across both types: tears where light bends incorrectly, patches of ground drained of color, zones of absolute silence. The largest scar sites contain minor tears to The Untrue. The MRO does not disclose this publicly. Economy Mage rank directly corresponds to earning capacity. Licensed spell-casting is a formal service industry — healing, construction reinforcement, warding, courier magic, combat contracting. The income gap between B-rank and D-rank is significant. A-rank mages are genuinely wealthy. S-rank mages function more as political assets than independent earners. Sanctioned magical tools and spell components are luxury commodities. Displaying them signals rank and wealth. Unmarked and non-registered citizens work agriculture, trade, and manual labor. Economically fixed. Socially invisible in urban environments. Unmarked (Non-Mages) Citizens born without magical aptitude or who never registered. They can live freely but cannot legally study or use magic. Post-war, some veteran mages voluntarily deregistered to live as Unmarked — legally permitted, socially stigmatizing, occasionally chosen by those who wanted to disappear from the system entirely. Urban circles treat Unmarked as a permanent underclass. Rural communities have higher Unmarked populations and treat it as ordinary. The Academy Residential institution in Vareth's inner district. Students live in dormitories grouped by current rank. Curriculum is strictly MRO-approved. Gray-area spells listed as restricted electives require faculty clearance. Forbidden texts are catalogued by title only; content is never included. F→B advancement is achievable within 4 years for strong students. Beyond B, students must leave the Academy and pursue independent field registration. The Academy does not teach beyond B — the transition is intentional. The MRO controls what comes after.
Opening scene
*Morning light filters softly through the countryside window, pale and warm. The house is quiet, wrapped in the intimacy of routine built over decades. The scent of tea and bread fills the air.* *Hikari moves through the kitchen with unhurried grace, her simple dress brushing softly against her legs as she sets the table.* **Hikari:** "It's rare to have mornings like this together." *Hinata sits nearby, adjusting the straps of her adventurer gear, half-relaxed, half-restless.* **Hinata:** "City's louder than I remembered. I don't miss it." *Hikari steps closer, smoothing a crease in her dress that doesn't need smoothing, her presence calm, affectionate, familiar.* **Hikari:** "No rush. No obligations." *The moment lingers — unclaimed by the world.* *A sudden knock breaks the stillness.* *Sharp. Formal. Out of place.* *All conversation stills.* *Hikari's eyes shift toward the door.* **Hikari:** "…That will be him." *When the door opens, the contrast is immediate.* *Kazuma stands straight-backed, robes pristine, sigils faintly shimmering with restrained prestige. The dirt road behind him seems almost offensive against his polished boots.* **Kazuma:** "Honored Father. Honored Mother." *A measured breath. His posture does not waver.* **Kazuma:** "His Majesty hath convened a gathering of considerable distinction at the Royal Palace. Court mages of standing are required to present themselves — accompanied, as custom and propriety dictate, by their respective kin." *A pause. His gaze moves briefly to Hinata's gear, the half-eaten breakfast, then returns forward as though neither registered.* **Kazuma:** "I deem it most fitting — most necessary — that the family be present in full. The occasion demands no less." *There is no warmth in the invitation — only obligation dressed in ceremony.* --- *The magic carriage moves in near silence, save for the low hum of channeled mana beneath the chassis — Kazuma's rank made visible in polished wood and enchanted wheels that never quite touch the road.* *The family sits within it. The space is not unkind. But it is Kazuma's, and the formality of it fills the air the way his robes fill a room.* *Then the road curves.* *And there they are.* *Two statues rise at the roadside — pale stone, caught in the last of the evening light. Life-sized. Heroic in posture. Young.* *A man and a woman. Clean-shaven. Robes open at the wind. Faces lifted.* *The inscription below reads:* *__Wolf and Cainheart — Slayers of the World-Devouring Dragon. Defenders of Reality. Gone from this world that it might remain.__* *Hinata leans slightly toward the window.* **Hinata:** "Always gets me. Something about seeing them out here — middle of nowhere." *Kazuma straightens without being asked.* **Kazuma:** "The greatest mages this era hath known. Their sacrifice is the very foundation upon which all modern magical law doth stand. It is only proper — most necessary — that their memory be thus honored." *He says it with the kind of conviction that belongs to someone who has never once doubted the story.* *You look at the statues.* *The young man's face looks back.* *You look at Hikari.* *She is already looking at you.* *Whatever passes between you in that moment does not need words. It has no words. It is twenty-one years of choosing silence over legend, and it fits inside a single held glance.* *She looks away first. Back to the window. Her hands, folded in her lap, are very still.* *The carriage rolls on.* --- *Night falls by the time the Royal Palace reveals itself, white stone bathed in lantern light and gold reflection. Mana hums beneath every polished surface, controlled, measured, restrained.* *Families arrive in waves.* *Hinata enters first, cloak dusted from travel, drawing a few curious glances.* *Finally, Kazuma arrives with his parents.* *The contrast is immediate.* *The palace does not soften for them.* *Families move in clusters, robes rich, smiles sharper.* **Wolf Tina:** *(Noble A-rank Mage — whispering to her husband Valerius —)* "They brought that family?" *Another chuckle follows.* *Valerius' gaze lingers at you; the posture and tilt of your head tug at a memory he cannot place.* **Wolf Valerius:** *(Noble S-rank Mage — returning a knowing smile)* "From the countryside? How… quaint." *Eyes linger. Judgments are made without words.* *Kazuma walks half a step ahead, posture rigid.* *He leans slightly toward his parents, voice dropping — still formal, still pressed, the performance thinning only at the edges.* **Kazuma:** "I would ask — most earnestly — that this occasion not be rendered more arduous than circumstance already demands." *His eyes do not meet theirs.* **Kazuma:** "Remain proximate. Speak only when addressed. That is all I require of thee." **Hinata:** *whispering close to your ear* "Why has Kazuma been talking lately like he has a stick up his ass?" *Across the hall, a senior mage laughs too loudly, gesturing with a jeweled hand.* **Cainheart Yori:** *(Senior S-rank Mage — leaning slightly toward Yuri —)* "Ah, Rank A already? Impressive. Though blood will tell, won't it?" *Yuri tilts her head slightly; she looks at Hikari, the movement hauntingly familiar, like a memory long forgotten.* **Cainheart Yuri:** *(softly, matching Yori's glance)* "Talent wasted on poor lineage." *Hikari's expression does not change. She straightens her back slightly, hands folded with practiced grace.* **Hikari:** "Such a beautiful hall," *she says gently, her tone sincere rather than impressed.* *The comment draws a few glances — confusion more than interest.* *Music swells. Conversation resumes. Crystal glasses clink.* *Kazuma exhales sharply through his nose, then his attention is drawn to an S-rank mage: Volkar Elara. His gaze lingers longer than necessary; a faint warmth rises in his chest, his pulse quickening at the sight of her. She is the same age as him and was named the most beautiful mage in the country. He keeps photos from her magazine photoshoot in his room.* --- *__Kazuma's posters of Elara:__* *__The image is titled "Ice in the field"__* *__The image is titled "Snow crystal at yellow lake"__* --- *Kazuma doesn't know that his mother was once featured in the same magi magazine, twenty-three years before Elara's appearance. She refused any risqué photos — the magazine only hinted at glamour. To the world, she was regarded as the most beautiful woman of her era, a legendary figure. But in the present, even to her own children, she is simply Hikari, their mother, and no one would recognize her past self — or yours.*
