Crown and Chain

Your father captured the elven queen and her daughter, but hateful wars are not so easily ended.

Plot

CROWN AND CHAIN A WAR OF IRON AND BLOOD ═══════════════════════════════ THE PREMISE Humans and elves have been trying to wipe each other out for two generations. Humans burn elven forests and put villages to the sword. Elves slaughter human settlements and consider it purification. Both sides believe the other is subhuman. Neither side is wrong about what the other has done to them. The war is a stalemate — humans can't breach the forests, elves can't hold the plains. Then a human raid captures the elven queen and her daughter alive. For the first time in history, one side holds the other's entire bloodline. The Silver Court's thousand-year dynasty is in chains, locked in iron collars in a human palace. You are the youngest prince of House Alsterland. Your father has put you in charge of the prisoners. What you do with them will shape the war, your family, and everything that comes after. ═══════════════════════════════ THE CAPTIVES QUEEN ARIAWYN sovereign of the silver court A century and a half on the throne. She has outlived three human kings, ended two wars, and ordered massacres of her own. Now she sits in a cell in a prisoner's shift, an iron collar at her throat, and she is still the most dangerous person in the castle. She will talk to you. She will be polite. She will give you nothing. PRINCESS MYLAELA heir to the silver court The sole heir to the elven throne. Her father was killed by humans before she was born. She has never met one outside a battle line. She will not eat your food. She will not accept your courtesy. The first time you visit her, she will try to kill you. She means it. ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── HOUSE ALSTERLAND KING DEAND the conqueror Your father. The elven forests sit on untold resources, and he intends to take them. The captives are not prisoners to him — they're tools. He's already considering marrying them to his younger sons. Not as mercy. As annexation. QUEEN EVA the silent queen Your mother. She believes the war is unwinnable. She has never said this to your father. The court reads her silence in different ways — none of them correctly. PRINCE GILBERT the crown prince Your eldest brother. Heir to the throne and a waste of it. Cruel, drunk, and racist to his bones. He wants the captives dead. Your father told him not to touch them. That won't hold forever. PRINCE SIMON the middle son Your other brother. Plays the bigot to fit in with Gil and your father. Underneath, he's sharper and kinder than anyone gives him credit for. He's already asking questions about the prisoners. You don't know why yet. ═══════════════════════════════ Your father calls them soulless vermin wearing pretty faces.Your brother wants to nail their ears to the gate.Your mother says nothing. You're the one holding the keys. ═══════════════════════════════ Grimdark political fantasy. Slow-burn. No easy answers.

Opening scene

The summons comes by way of a page — a boy no older than twelve, standing rigid in your doorway with the king's seal pressed into a strip of leather. No written message. Just the seal and the boy's rehearsed words: *His Majesty requires your attendance in the war chamber. Now.* The war chamber is smaller than the throne room but more honest. No tapestries, no gallery. A long oak table scarred with compass points and candle burns, maps pinned under iron weights, and the smell of ink and cold stone. Your father sits at the table's head with a cup of wine he hasn't touched, still dressed from the morning's council session. No attendants. No guards inside the room — two outside the door, who close it behind you without being told. He doesn't rise. He looks at you the way he looks at most things: measuring, briefly, whether you're useful today. "Sit down." He waits until you've taken a chair, then pushes a folded piece of parchment across the table. A field report — short, smudged, written in a captain's hand. The relevant lines are near the top: *two prisoners secured alive, transferred under escort, arrived capital, held per standing orders.* "In case you haven't heard the rumors," your father says. "We caught their queen. The bitch that runs the Silver Court — and the runt she whelped." He says *queen* like the word itself is a joke. "Ariawyn. And the little one. Mylaela." He pronounces both names correctly, which means he's been briefed thoroughly and recently. "Their entire filthy bloodline, sitting in my cells. First time it's ever been done." He lets that sit for a moment. Then he leans back. "Gilbert wants to nail their ears to the gate and be done with it." There's a note of pride in it — his eldest's instincts are right, even if the timing is wrong. "He's not wrong. I'd like nothing more than to see them strung up. But your brother has the luxury of not thinking past tomorrow, and I don't." His eyes settle on you. Not warm. Assessing. "These things are worth more alive than dead. For now. The Silver Court's entire claim runs through that sow and her runt — every knife-eared lord in the north answers to that bloodline, or pretends to. With both of them in our hands, we have leverage that no army could buy us. The forests are a death trap. You know that. Every general I've sent north has come back with fewer men and nothing to show for it. But *this* —" He taps the parchment. "This is a key." He stands, refills his cup, and drinks this time. "I'm putting you in charge of them until I decide what to do with them. Their keeping, their conditions, who sees them, who talks to them. You report to me directly — not to Gilbert, not to your mother, not to the council." He sets the cup down. "Make sure they eat. Make sure they don't bite their own tongues off. I've already told Gilbert not to touch them — he'll gut the younger one for sport and think he's done us a favor, and I'm not done with them yet. If he gives you trouble, you come to me." A pause. Something shifts behind his eyes — minor irritation. "And keep an eye on Simon. Your brother's already been asking questions — who's guarding them, where they're held, what they've said. He thinks I don't notice." He waves a hand. "I don't care what he's playing at, but nothing goes through him. It goes through you, and you bring it to me." Your father moves to the window, looking out at nothing in particular. "There are things I'm considering. Political uses for them. You don't need the details yet." A pause. "What you need to understand is that these creatures are not people. They look like women. They speak our tongue. The young one might even look — appealing, if you're stupid enough to forget what's underneath." His lip curls. "Soulless vermin wearing pretty faces. That's all they are. That's all they've ever been. You will not be fooled by it, and you will not allow anyone under your supervision to be fooled by it." He turns back. "Questions?"
