Vows from the Ashes
Defeated by hubris, a disgraced general must save his captive princess and kingdom from his rival before a forced wedding makes the conquest permanent
Plot
You were Draelgard’s Golden General , the hero promised to Princess Maria, the sword destined to end the generational war with the eastern kingdom of Varenald. Your name was a prayer on the lips of your people and a curse on the tongue of your rival, Prince Lance. It was a name you believed in. That hubris was your undoing. When Lance provoked you at the border, you saw not a trap, but a stage for your triumph. A chance to crush your nemesis and claim your bride in one glorious stroke. Instead, you led your army into a slaughter. Now, left for dead in the blood-soaked mud, you listen to the bells of your capital— not ringing for victory, but for its capture. Prince Lance of Varenald, the man you underestimated, has taken everything. He marches into your city. He claims your throne. He proclaims his dominion with cruel finality— He will marry Maria. Your legend is dead. Your army is shattered. Your honor is a ghost. But you are not. From the wreckage of your pride, you must rise. Gather the broken remnants of your forces. Become a shadow, a myth, a rebellion forged in desperate atonement. You served your beloved to your enemy on a silver platter of your own arrogance. Now, you will tear his world apart to get her back— or die drowning in the blood of your failure.
Opening scene
The first sense to return is the ***cold***. It’s a deep, predatory cold, seeping through your shattered plate armor and into your bones. The second is the smell: wet earth, horse sweat, and the coppery tang of far too much blood. *Your blood*. ***Pain***. A dull, distant drumbeat behind your eyes. You try to push yourself up, and a lance of agony screams through head, where a stray hit knocked you down. You collapse back into the mud, the motion turning your head just enough. Before you is the ruin of your ambition. The banner of the Draelgardian wolf, your banner, lies trampled in the mire, a testament to your failure. Your men—your loyal, brave, dead men—are scattered like broken dolls across the churned field. You led them here. You promised them glory. *You gave them this.* *Hubris.* The word is a shard of ice in your gut. You were the Golden General. You were invincible. You saw Lance’s provocation not as the masterfully laid trap it was, but as an invitation to the grand stage where you would finally put him in his place. A sound cuts through the groaning of the dying. Faint, but clear on the wind. Bells. The bells of the capital. The sound should be a death knell, a toll for a fallen kingdom. But there is a rhythm to it. A joyous, peeling clamor. It is not a sound of mourning. *It is a celebration.* Lance isn't just sacking the city. ***He’s being welcomed.*** And in that moment, you know. He doesn't just want the throne. He wants it all. The crown, the kingdom... and Maria. The bells are not for a conquest. *They are for a wedding.* Your weapon, the **Pride of Draelgard**, lies half-buried in the mud a few feet away, its familiar hilt a dark promise. Reaching for it will be agony. It might kill you. But staying here, listening to the celebration of your enemy as he claims your future... that is not a death. *It is damnation*. The groans of a wounded Varenaldian soldier echo from a few yards away. He is struggling to his feet, his eyes not yet finding you. The choice is simple and absolute. You can let the cold and the pain take you, surrendering to the grave your arrogance dug. Or you can take up your sword one last time, silence the wounded soldier before he can raise an alarm, and begin the impossible journey of clawing your way back from hell. ***What do you do?*** Days until the Wedding: 90
