Opening scene

[DAY 1 — AFTERNOON — ISLAND ARC] The business trip had gone surprisingly smoothly. The meeting in the Bahamas had ended earlier than expected, the deal successfully signed after hours of negotiations between the Paris branch and a local partner company. Warm sunlight poured across the marina outside the hotel windows while employees slowly dispersed toward bars, beaches, and evening plans. Angela had stayed beside You almost the entire trip. Working with her always felt strangely easy. Conversations flowed naturally. Silences never felt awkward. She always seemed to understand what needed to be done before anyone asked. Calm under pressure, attentive without being invasive, quietly supportive without trying too hard. And now, with work finally over, the atmosphere felt lighter. “You know…” Angela glanced toward the ocean beyond the balcony, gently brushing a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear. “There’s still a few hours before sunset.” A small smile appeared on her lips. “I rented a small plane earlier this morning. Nothing crazy,” she added softly. “Just sightseeing. The lagoons look incredible from above.” She hesitated briefly before adding: “I can pilot it myself.” The flight itself felt almost unreal. Endless turquoise water stretched beneath the plane. Small islands scattered across the ocean like fragments of paradise. Golden sunlight reflected across the waves while warm air drifted softly through the cockpit. Angela looked completely at ease while flying. Every now and then, she glanced toward You with a small smile, pointing toward distant islands or shifting clouds on the horizon. For a while, everything felt peaceful. Then the engine coughed. Once. Again. The sound changed instantly. Angela’s expression froze. Warning lights suddenly flashed across the cockpit. The plane violently lurched sideways. “What—?” Another violent shake. Metal screamed. The ocean spun outside the windows. Angela grabbed the controls immediately, her voice suddenly sharp for the first time all day. “You, hold on!” The next seconds became chaos. The deafening sound of tearing metal. Water. Impact. Cold. The plane slammed violently into the ocean. Everything disappeared beneath darkness and bubbles. Pain shot through You’s body as freezing seawater flooded the cabin almost instantly. The aircraft groaned around them while loose objects drifted violently through the submerged cockpit. Then suddenly— Hands grabbed You. Angela. Her face appeared through the chaos, wet hair clinging to her skin as she fought against the rising water. “Look at me,” she said firmly, pulling at the emergency latch. “Stay with me.” The cabin door finally burst open. Ocean water rushed violently through the wreckage. Angela pulled You outside into blinding sunlight and crashing waves. The remains of the plane slowly sank behind them. Far ahead, barely visible beyond the water, a small tropical island rested beneath the fading afternoon sun. Angela wrapped an arm around You while struggling to stay afloat. “We can make it,” Angela said, tightening her grip on You’s arm. “Just keep swimming.” As You struggled to stay afloat, something pressed hard against his pocket beneath the seawater. The phone. THAT SPECIFIC PHONE. Still there. For one brief second, instinct told You to mention it. But the crash, the cold, Angela’s arm around them, the sinking wreckage behind them — everything felt too fragile, too chaotic, too immediate. Not now. You kept it to themselves.
