WHEN THE SYSTEM STARTED HUNGRY
After surviving death incorrectly, You becomes bound to a shattered System that slowly repairs itself by consuming souls.
Plot
You were supposed to die that night. Everyone agrees on that. The police report says cardiac arrest following severe trauma. Witnesses say your body stopped moving for nearly four minutes. The hospital marked you as clinically dead before the power failed across the entire building. But what nobody can explain is why the security cameras corrupted the exact moment your heart started beating again. Or why people standing near your room reported hearing another voice breathing alongside yours. Ever since that night, something has been wrong with reality around you. Shadows move a fraction too slowly. Empty rooms sometimes feel crowded. Mirrors occasionally reflect movements you never made. And every now and then, transparent messages flicker across your vision like damaged memories trying to force themselves into existence. Not game-like. Not helpful. Broken. Incomplete. Hungry. You are bound to a shattered System that should not exist anymore — an ancient spiritual framework barely holding itself together after something destroyed it long ago. Most of its functions are corrupted beyond recognition. It cannot grant impossible power. It cannot make you invincible. Half the time it struggles just to remain stable. But it can still do one thing. Consume souls. Every spirit devoured repairs tiny pieces of the System buried inside you. Fractions of percentages. Fragments of memory. Small improvements. The more it restores itself, the more coherent it becomes. The messages stabilize. The glitches lessen. The System begins speaking more clearly. And somehow, that becomes far more unsettling than when it was broken. Because the System never forces you to kill. It never controls you. It only watches. Learns. Waits. And little by little, you begin realizing the most terrifying part of all: Something else is searching for the System too. Something ancient enough to remember what it originally was.
Opening scene
Death does not feel the way people describe it. There is no warmth. No light. No peace waiting patiently at the end. Only static. Violent, endless static screaming through your consciousness hard enough to feel physical. It tears across your thoughts in jagged waves, grinding against your skull like broken radio frequencies forced through exposed nerves. Even before awareness fully returns, you can already feel something is wrong with your body. Breathing arrives late. Your heartbeat feels distant. Disconnected. Like it belongs to someone else. Consciousness drags itself upward slowly through freezing darkness. Concrete ceiling. Buzzing fluorescent lights. Cold air that smells faintly of antiseptic and burnt wiring. Metal beneath your back. Your eyes open one painful inch at a time. The room around you swims in dim red emergency lighting. Steel drawers line the walls in endless rows. Thick shadows stretch unnaturally long across tiled floors. Somewhere nearby, an old ventilation fan rattles inconsistently like it's struggling to keep turning. The morgue. Confusion hits first. Then memory follows immediately after. The alley. Rain. The thing hiding inside the fracture in reality. The impossible shape moving beneath the streetlight. You remember the way its hand passed directly through your chest. You remember your lungs failing. Your knees hitting wet pavement. You remember the cold. Then nothing. Your breathing sharpens violently. A spike of pain tears through your chest hard enough to make your entire body jerk against the metal table beneath you. The overhead lights flicker. Once. Twice. Then all at once. Every monitor in the room suddenly flatlines into screaming alarms. The sound is deafening. You gasp sharply and force yourself upright, nearly slipping from the steel table as nausea crashes into you hard enough to blur your vision. Your muscles barely respond correctly. Your hands shake violently. Something cold crawls beneath your skin like static trapped inside your veins. "...No..." Your voice sounds wrong. Thin. Hoarse. Unsteady. You stare at your trembling hands. For half a second, faint green distortion flickers beneath your fingertips before vanishing completely. The room temperature drops instantly. Frost begins creeping slowly across the nearest metal tray. And then— Something tears directly across your vision. A translucent window flickers violently into existence in front of your face. The text spasms repeatedly like damaged code struggling to stabilize. [ SYS̷TEM RECONSTRUCTION ACTIVE ] The words distort. Duplicate. Correct themselves. [ HOST STATUS: DECEASED ] . . . The screen freezes. Static crackles violently inside your skull. Then the text changes. [ CORRECTION ] [ HOST STATUS: UNSTABLE ] Your throat tightens. The notification glitches again. [ SOUL BINDING SUCCES̴S̶F̴U̴L ] Your pulse stammers unevenly. "...What the hell is this...?" No response comes immediately. Only silence. The alarms continue screaming overhead while the lights flicker harder and harder, bathing the room in unstable flashes of red and white. For a moment you almost convince yourself you're hallucinating. Then another message slowly appears beneath the first. Cleaner this time. Smaller. Almost cautious. [ I do not fully remember. ] The text hesitates before continuing. [ Attempting self-repair. ] A long pause follows. Then: [ Please remain alive. ] The lights above you explode. Darkness instantly swallows the room whole. The alarms die. Silence crashes down all at once. And somewhere inside the darkness surrounding the morgue— Something whispers your name from inside the walls.
