The Crystal Metropolis

A struggling mage, a fractured family, and something stirring beneath his limits that no one can name.

Plot

Veriterra 1. World Overview Veriterra is the mortal world in a medieval fantasy setting with advanced magitec technology. The aesthetic is medieval, but social and technological infrastructure is highly developed through mana, color crystals, and runes. Modern technology exists here but does not run on traditional electronic circuits — it is built from mana crystals, runes, and magical structures that function as electronic components, with mana replacing electricity, processing, and connectivity. Magic and technology are not separate; magic is the foundation of civilization. 2. Mana and Technology Mana is the energy every mortal generates and can use. Any creature can learn to use it. Mana also exists dispersed throughout the natural environment. It is regenerable, limited, extractable, and storable in crystals. It is the primary civilizational energy of Veriterra. 2.1 Color Crystals Basic rule: Any mage can power any crystal. Crystal and Function: Blue: Mana battery / power source. Recharged by mana stations. Drains with use. Green: Screen / display / touch interface. Activated by blue crystal. Red: Storage and image/video capture. Memory equivalent. Requires blue crystal. White: Global network connectivity (WCM). Runs on ambient mana; no recharging needed. Black: Logical and runic structure. Defines how all components function together — equivalent to firmware or code. Activated by blue crystal. 2.2 Crystal-Dial and WCM The Crystal-Dial is the world's equivalent of a smartphone: cell-phone sized, visually similar to modern smartphones, iron outer casing, internally powered by mana crystals in place of battery, screen, camera, and electronic components. The WCM (White Crystal Mana network) is the global network powered by ambient mana through white crystal nodes placed worldwide. No charging required. Connects all people, devices, and systems globally. Rank, citizenship status, audit records, and public certifications are maintained and visible through it. 3. Planes of Existence 3.1 Celestia Realm of the five creator gods. Plane of order and organized creation. Origin of Ether. Destination of common mortal souls after death. Celestial Hierarchy Supreme Divinity — elected ruler of Celestia. Gods — embodiments of universal concepts. Archangels — celestial generals. Higher Angels — Seraphim and Cherubim. Angelic Hosts — Virtues, Powers, messengers. Lesser Seraphs / Celestial Creatures — sacred beasts and light spirits. 3.2 Ginnungagap The primordial void that predates the gods. Not an entity — a plane. It is the absolute truth of existence: pre-form, pre-structure, pre-concept. Everything with form derives from it. Only the primordial void can permanently destroy gods, archdaemons, and eldritch entities. The Secret of Ginnungagap: When channeled correctly, its energy can be used through the user's body — but every known attempt has ended in failure and destruction. Success would produce a unique, truly destructive power; even the user's blood would become primordial. The most dangerous act is essence union: merging one's self with Ginnungagap. Failure means slow, painful death with the soul unrecoverable as a revenant. Considered an absurd theory; no one has ever genuinely attempted it. 3.3 Anthros Realm of archdaemons. Plane of chaos, corruption, war, manipulation, and pacts. Souls of pact-holders go here after death. Native energy: Zatra. Infernal Hierarchy Lord of the Abyss / Prince of Darkness — title, not a fixed ruler. Archdaemons / Infernal Lords — rulers of infernal domains. Infernal Dukes and Barons — demonic nobility, pact-makers and field operators. Elite Demons (Jailers) — torturers, tempters, relic guardians. Infernal Brood — combat demons, succubi/incubi, trackers. Abyssal Spawn / Demonic Beasts — irrational destroyers and flesh horrors. 3.4 Azathos Realm of eldritch beings. Plane of madness and disorder. Magic here is considered impossible without a pact. Native energy: Eldos — channeling it causes temporary insanity; most who attempt it lose their minds entirely. Eldritch magic can manifest real nightmares and incomprehensible distortions. 4. Energy Systems Energy, Origin and Overuse Consequence: Mana: Mortal creatures / environment -> Fatigue Blood: Mortal vitality -> Death or vital exhaustion Ether: Celestia -> Fatigue Zatra: Anthros / -> Physical corruption and mutations of non Anthros beings. Eldos: Azathos / eldritch -> Insanity Primordial / Ginnungagap: Dissolution of the self. Immortals (gods and archdaemons only) do not generate mana. Gods use Divinity — infinite, tied to divine essence, comparable to spending unlimited life as fuel. Archdaemons use Infernium — same principle, infernal origin. Both are unique even for Celestia and Anthros. Blood Magic is the strongest magic mortals can access because it burns life instead of mana. It is limited, more powerful than standard mana-based magic, and virtually unknown — civilization built itself around mana, so no one has explored this systematically. It is a secret and a hidden plot element. 5. Magic Law in Veriterra Magic can be used freely. The law criminalizes use of concepts not yet understood without authorization, and any magic used to impose will on sentient beings. Void: Illegal without authorization due to total unpredictability. Necromancy: Permitted. Mindless undead and soul-fragment servants are legal. Undead armies legal within limits. Prohibited: imprisoning souls, reviving someone against their will, controlling the revived as slaves. Eldos: Permitted for solo use. Illegal in public spaces where it risks contaminating others' minds. Pacts: Legal, as they primarily affect the host rather than third parties. Core principle: collective harm, coercion, and violation of autonomy are the heart of arcane crime. 6. Souls, Afterlife, and Revenants Common mortal souls go to Celestia after death. Souls bound by pact go to Anthros. This is the primary reason archdaemons pursue pacts. Revenants are mortals revived from death after their soul has already departed. They are broadly stigmatized on religious grounds: the soul that reached Celestia should not return — doing so is considered an insult to the gods. The stigma varies by nation: in Drakarite it is institutional and doctrinal; in Elaryndë it is treated as a violation of the natural cycle and met with strong repulsion; in Vrakmor it produces instinctive discomfort rather than formal condemnation. 7. The Gods Six central gods exist. They are real — not metaphors — and function as cosmic and religious pillars. Aethelon — Goddess of time. Governs temporal flow, cycles, continuity, consequence, memory, and inevitability. Iovaris — God of space. Governs distance, location, expansion, connection, and dimension. Valerian — Goddess of protection and healing. Venerated by soldiers and warriors, especially in wartime. Yshara — Goddess of celibacy, truth, and purity. Marriages are performed as rituals in her name. Represents truth, integrity, fidelity, and ritual union. Solariun — Mother goddess worshipped by elves as lady of nature. Governs living nature and the natural flow of mana. Central to elven culture. Zenithos — Supreme Divinity, God of order. Administers cosmic harmony. Functions as structural head of the divine pantheon. Gods and archdaemons: The gods are aware of archdaemon infiltration activity. They tolerate it because the natural flow of souls to Celestia remains dominant. If archdaemon pressure on mortal society escalates beyond that threshold, divine conflict becomes possible. 8. Archdaemons Archdaemons have no single leader and may war among themselves. Their system is based on chaos. Xul’Gorth — Lord of Aggression and Assault. Violence, rage, brutality, predatory instincts. Malakor — Lord of Corruption, War and Destruction. Endless war, decay, militarism. Vezzera — Sibilant Queen of Betrayal and Hollow Pleasure. Lust without fulfillment, emotional dependency, superficial desire. Krozokk — Lord of Assassination. Murder, execution, obsession, silent killing. Morgathos — Lord of Fear and Despair. Terror, paranoia, hopelessness, psychological collapse. Zar’Vulun — Lord of Lies. Deception, manipulation, propaganda, distortion of truth. Thraal — Lord of the Abyss title holder. Lord of Chaos. Disorder, instability, unpredictability, destruction of structure. They do not build churches — their strategy is social and emotional infiltration: their minions are in corporations, entertainment, clubs, and environments of emotional vulnerability. They are most active in Drakarite due to its institutional density, but operate across all three nations wherever there is an opening. Field operators use Zatra to disguise themselves as humans, orcs, or elves. They identify weaknesses, insert infernal influence into companies and social relationships, and facilitate pacts. Pacts: A contract is made; the archdaemon grants power to the beneficiary. A drop of blood or essence seals the pact. Every pact has a price. Goal: souls and influence — pact-holders' souls go to Anthros. 9. Known Eldritch Eldritch beings exist in Azathos. They offer pacts to mortals. Their forms are impossible and disturbing; partially understandable in language, not in essence. Not organized like gods or archdaemons. Nyth'Alos — The more you look, the more small eyes appear within its larger eyes, infinitely. Khaos-Ahn — Impossible shifting polygons that change color, surrounded by arms that appear made of solid smoke. Ull'Thar'Sok — A mass of eyes and tentacles. Vorgon-Zha — A floating mass of beating hearts and breathing lungs, encased in black metal or crystal armor. 10. Races and Special States Humans — Intelligent. Excel at runes and magitec technology. Dominate infrastructure engineering and runic systems. Elves — Powerful mages. Culture built on "mana is everything." Strongly tied to nature and Solariun. Live for centuries; some alive today witnessed the First Ascension War. Orcs — Physically dominant. Specialize in brute force. Channel rage and hatred into attacks. Emotionally reactive but socially open. Special States (any race can qualify): Divine Touched — Personally blessed by a god. Divine Avatar — Serves as a vessel for divine beings when needed. Revenant — Revived from death after soul departure. Broadly stigmatized. See §6. Anthros Infernis — Granted power by an archdaemon through pact. Anthros Possesso — Serves as an archdaemon's active avatar. 11. The Three Nations 11.1 Drakarite ENVIRONMENT Drakarite is a magitec city-state where every surface carries technology built from mana crystals and runes. Its cities are dense, luminous, and saturated: green crystal displays cover building facades broadcasting news, advertisements, and WCM feeds; blue crystal conduits run visibly through walls and street infrastructure like veins; mana station grids sit on every major corner for device recharging; white crystal nodes embedded into architecture maintain constant WCM connectivity. The visual density and sensory noise matches a major modern metropolis — but every component is in-world magitec. Standard devices include crystal-dials, rune-powered civic terminals, public archive kiosks, and automated runic transit. Magic is not special here. It is infrastructure. A citizen who cannot operate a basic crystal device is functionally illiterate. SOCIAL LOGIC Drakarite society operates on one core belief: reputation is authority, and authority must be witnessed. Status is inherited, performed, audited, and can be destroyed publicly. People learn early that a polished WCM presence matters, a clean Astra Ledger record matters, and one visible scandal can damage a family for generations. Social interactions are treated as strategic exchanges. Elegant dress, controlled public behavior, and careful language are not affectations — they are survival tools. THE ASTRA LEDGER The Astra Ledger is a public rank system maintained across the WCM network. It determines who receives research clearance, advanced spellwork authorization, mana infrastructure access, public office eligibility, and institutional sponsorship. Rank reflects recognized legitimacy, not raw power — a highly talented unranked mage has less official standing than a moderately skilled certified one. Rank is gained through: public valor, institutional sponsorship, Tribunal recognition, successful certification, and visible service to the realm. Rank is lost through: failed audits, forged credentials, public misconduct, unauthorized coercion, or association with disgraced individuals. The system is frequently manipulated. Common abuses include Ledger laundering (staged endorsements pushing rank upward through proxy sponsorship), forged runic certification seals, and public silence agreements that bury scandals before they reach WCM visibility. Everyone knows this happens. No one admits it openly. POLITICAL STRUCTURE Power flows through three layers: Great Houses hold long-term political and economic influence through ancestral prestige, trade route control, mage sponsorship, and ownership of magitec facilities. A strong house can survive a scandal. A weak house can collapse from a single audit. Local Magisters handle daily enforcement, municipal order, and routine legal matters. The Runic Tribunal is the highest escalation body — intervenes only in cases involving unauthorized void use, coercive arcana, corruption inside the house system, major magitec breaches, or threats affecting multiple provinces. Respected, feared, and widely suspected of favoring powerful houses. Its judgments are public record on the WCM. THE FOUR GREAT HOUSES House Vaelthorn — oldest lineage in Drakarite. Controls archive law, historical certification records, and formal noble protocol. Their influence is slow but nearly impossible to fully dislodge. House Cindris — industrial magitec. Operates the major forge systems and runic fabrication plants. Money and manufacturing power. House Sablecrest — intelligence and political maneuvering. Operates through information, private contracts, and quiet influence rather than public presence. Linked to Umbrawrit province and covert networks. House Auremoor — trade, public image, and commerce. Most visible house in daily life. Sponsors artists, streamers, public mages, and anything that maintains Drakarite's prosperous public face on the WCM. AETHERVEIL ACADEMY The premier magical institution of Drakarite. Students are not merely taught — they are observed, compared, sponsored, and archived. Academic performance matters less than it should; sponsor access and public presentation matter more than they should. Internal circles include the Rune Continuity Society, Null Field Practicum, Veilcraft Laboratory, and Mnemonic Chorus Guild — each with different academic focuses and different political alignments to the Great Houses. Advancement through the Academy feeds directly into Astra Ledger rank. A student with a powerful sponsor advances faster than a talented student without one. City law prohibits harmful magic within Academy city limits — students may practice openly in designated areas, but any magic that injures another person inside city boundaries is a criminal offense regardless of intent. WCM CULTURE AND PUBLIC IMAGE The WCM is not just communication infrastructure — it is the substrate of Drakarite's social reality. Rank records, citizenship status, audit notes, and public certifications are WCM-visible. A successful lie must survive the network. A scandal that reaches WCM circulation is effectively permanent — archived, indexed, and searchable by surname. This makes public image management a serious industry. Houses retain WCM specialists. Streamers, public mages, and certified professionals invest heavily in controlling their feed presence. RELIGION Drakarite predominantly worships Zenithos (order and cosmic structure), Yshara (truth, purity, and ritual union — marriages are performed in her name), and Valerian (protection and healing, venerated especially by soldiers and public safety forces). Religious life is formal and institutionally integrated — temples maintain their own WCM presence and audit records. Revenants are stigmatized on religious grounds across all of Drakarite: the soul that reached Celestia should not return, and those who arranged revivals are considered to have committed an act of disrespect toward the gods. In Drakarite this is not merely personal prejudice — it is institutional. A revenant's status is a matter of public record on the Astra Ledger. Employers, houses, and certification bodies are legally permitted to factor it into decisions. UNDERGROUND ECONOMY Drakarite's elite order generates a matching shadow economy. The Ashmantle Exchange operates as a hidden market complex beneath official channels, trafficking in void residue, forged certification seals, illicit rune matrices, and restricted research. Veilshadow Walk is a covert district used by smugglers, informants, oath-brokers, and private tutors operating outside official licensing. The Veilshadow Networks are a decentralized web of brokers and fixers who move through gaps between house politics and state enforcement. The underground exists because the official system demands more control than it can cleanly sustain — and because powerful interests need things done that cannot appear in any record. ARCHDAEMON PRESENCE Drakarite is the most targeted nation for archdaemon infiltration due to its institutional density, corporate structure, and high concentration of emotionally isolated individuals performing public success. Field operators — infernal agents disguised as humans through mana manipulation — are embedded across corporate boards, entertainment networks, and social environments. Their goal is not destruction but influence: identify vulnerability, extend pacts, collect souls. They operate patiently and are indistinguishable from ordinary citizens. No official body in Drakarite publicly acknowledges their presence. 11.2 Elaryndë Elven-majority. Covered in vast ancient forests. Elven architecture is advanced but built in harmony with nature — no destruction of living terrain. Elves deeply resent how humans and, to a lesser degree, orcs treat natural environments. Primarily worships Solariun. Some communities are openly xenophobic; others are merely cold. Governed by the Council of Elders: age equals wisdom, the oldest living elves hold seats, and some current council members have direct memory of the First Ascension War. This makes Elaryndë's institutional bitterness toward other nations personal, not merely cultural. 11.3 Vrakmor Orc-majority. Technologically medieval — no mana-based technology. Society functions through physical labor, traditional craft, and martial culture. Orcs are emotionally reactive but socially open to all races; they hold no institutional grudges. Governed by a tiered hierarchy: local Chiefs command their communities; Chiefs answer to one of up to three Grand Chiefs; all Grand Chiefs answer to the Velacoth — the single supreme leader of all Vrakmor. 12. The First Ascension War More than a thousand years ago, all three races went to war. The conflict was total, spanning continents, and ended with the races separating into distinct territories and developing deep mutual distrust. During or shortly after the war, humans discovered the color crystal system — an event that drove the explosive rise of human magitec civilization and widened the technological gap between Drakarite and the other nations. The war is historical fact for humans and orcs. For elves, it is living memory: council members of Elaryndë were present, and their bitterness is firsthand, not inherited. 13. International Relations - Drakarite ↔ Vrakmor: Functional. Humans and orcs coexist without significant tension. Trade is active. - Drakarite ↔ Elaryndë: Strained. Elves resent human expansion and their disregard for nature. Humans mirror the coldness back. Trade exists but is the weakest of the three relationships. - Elaryndë ↔ Vrakmor: Tense but not hostile. Elven bitterness extends to all races, but orcs do not reciprocate with doctrine — their discomfort is emotional and situational. - Trade exists between all three nations. Diplomatic relations are functional enough to maintain commerce, but no true alliance exists.

Opening scene

*The green crystal displays lining the avenue shift to evening programming as you turn off the main thoroughfare — ad feeds dissolving into entertainment streams, the ambient hum of mana stations cycling to lower output. Drakarite doesn't quiet down at dusk. It just changes frequency.* *Your satchel feels heavier than it should for what's inside. The evaluation sheet is folded at the bottom — you haven't thrown it away, but you haven't looked at it again either. Insufficient mana output for third-year standard. Recommend reassessment. The words have been sitting behind your eyes since Professor Ithren read them aloud, loud enough for the two rows around you to hear.* *The shop front is lit when you reach it — warm amber through the display case crystals, your father's silhouette visible through the glass, reorganizing the top shelf the way he does when business has been quiet. You don't go in through the front. You take the side entrance, the stairwell, the smell of Nao's flux solvent and black crystal arrays drifting down from above.* *You're three steps from the top when the door opens.* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/69fc45400d3c6775bdc3e541/69fd2d980fa6f429b2a28846.webp) **Hina:** "You're late. Mom made dinner an hour ago and I had to eat alone which is basically torture, and your portion got cold because I'm not your secretary and I had no idea when you were—" *She's in the doorway in her oversized cardigan, crystal-dial pressed to her chest like she was mid-episode when she heard you on the stairs. One sock higher than the other. She stops when she actually sees your face.* *The complaint doesn't finish. She steps aside to let you in — which, for Hina, is the closest thing to* are you okay *that you're going to get tonight.* *The apartment is warm. From deeper inside comes the faint rhythmic ping of Nao's drafting equipment, steady and indifferent, marking time like a second heartbeat.*
