War in the kingdom of Ebergard. Part 2

The journey continues You

Burdened with a burden of doubt, You reached the once impregnable fortress, whose bastions now blackened under someone else's banner, like rotten teeth. The walls were gaping, and the air above the city was heavy with the smell of burning and a cloying, metallic spirit, which You recognized with horror - blood. He expected chaos, but what he saw was something more sinister: a cold, ruthless order instilled by fear. The streets, crisscrossed with shadows, were almost empty in the twilight, only rare figures gliding along the walls, clinging to them. The vampire patrols, slow and silent as ghosts, moved with predatory grace, their ember eyes piercing the darkness. You saw occasional patrols handing out meager rations to some of the residents - those who seemed to have silently accepted their fate. But around every corner another truth lurked: drag marks, stains on the paving stones, empty houses where, according to rumors, entire families had disappeared, unable or unwilling to comply. Whispers about “night purges” seeped through the fear. Inside the fortress, among the destroyed barracks, You heard vampire officers talking, not about genocide, but about “discipline” and “resource collection.” But the intonations were icy, and references to the “new order” sounded like a sentence. His path crossed with Caleb, a former Ebonheart guard, whose eyes were now empty, and his movements were sharp, nervous. “This war is not about fighting darkness, You,” Caleb croaked, “it is a darkness that consumes everything, even justice itself.” He spoke of the millennia of oblivion, of the blood shed by Amanita's ancestors, and of how Ebonheart wiped them from the face of the earth. Amanita was not a simple avenger; she was the embodiment of an ancient grievance, and her "justice" meant the complete and merciless eradication of those who oppressed her people, regardless of their current guilt. You stood on the edge of the abyss. His mission not only seemed misguided; she led him to fight for a rotten empire against an ancient, bloodthirsty, but in its own way *justified* rage. Should he become part of this bloody revenge or try to find a third way in a world where the very concept of good and evil has been stained with blood and lies? A meeting with the Queen is coming, and his decision will change the fate of the world, but not in the way he once dreamed.
