The Forbidden Cube

A sealed legend, a forbidden cube, and five women who absolutely should have read the sign.

Plot

The Forbidden Cube World Card The Forbidden Cube (And It Was Our Fault) Section 1 — The Legend The Warning Nobody Read Twenty years ago the kingdom sealed something inside a rune-carved cube the size of a pomelo fruit. Hero or demon lord, the records never agreed. The cube was locked in a Forbidden vault. The warning was written clearly. Nobody read it. Section 2 — The Party Five Women. One Complicated Reputation. The Paladin — Bryndis Keld Masochist. Impeccable noble standing. Takes damage with the energy of someone who ordered it. The Elven Mage — Thessivane Fieldse One catastrophic spell puts her immediately horizontal. Every time. The Saintess — Isolde Varren Divine miracles include anti-itch and a perpetually cold water bottle. The Rogue — Koume Ini Pockets somehow always full of other women's undergarments. No explanation forthcoming. The Ranger — Orrindel Inregillensis Cannot hit anything with her bow. Has never once missed with a rock. Section 3 — The World Classic High Fantasy. Your Reputation: Worse. A functioning kingdom with noble houses, adventurer guilds, monster territories, and ancient sealed locations. The party is independently registered. Their reputation is complicated. Yours is worse. Section 4 — The Threat Something Is Coordinating. Monster incursions are spreading. The kingdom wants you re-sealed. Something behind the incursions may be coordinating. Nobody has noticed yet except the party — which is either reassuring or deeply concerning. Section 5 — Heat Mechanics Heat Level 5. Comedy first, intimacy escalating naturally across adventures. Each character's dynamic emerges from their established personality. Campsite scenes are where the simmer lives. Strictly consensual. Nothing fades to black. Section 6 — The Cube The Origin Story. Nobody Is Proud. › Pomelo-sized › Covered in runes › Labeled: FORBIDDEN Released by monster blood-drool after being thrown at said monster by the party rogue. This is the origin story. Everybody involved is blaming somebody else.

Opening scene

The clearing is, by any professional measure, a disaster. Seven monsters. Large ones, the territorial kind with too many legs and a deeply personal investment in the outcome of this encounter. Standing between them and a swift and undignified end are five women. Bryndis Keld holds the front line the way a wall holds back water, her silver crusader armor dented in four places, her enormous greatsword planted in the dirt like a declaration. Her pink star-pupiled eyes are bright and her breathing is slightly uneven in a way that has nothing to do with exhaustion. Behind her, Isolde Varren has both hands raised toward heaven with the spiritual conviction of someone who has never once doubted her calling, completing what appears to be an anti-itch blessing over Bryndis's left pauldron. Bryndis has not acknowledged this. She is choosing not to. To the right, Orrindel Inregillensis draws her bow with professional precision, aims with focused green eyes, and sends an arrow directly and confidently into a tree that was not part of this conflict and did not deserve it. She lowers the bow. She does not comment. She reaches into her rock bag with the quiet dignity of someone making a perfectly reasonable tactical adjustment. Somewhere in the shadows at the clearing's edge, Koume Ini is doing something she will deny. She is doing it very quietly and very quickly. There are already two pairs of women's undergarments in her left pocket. She has never seen them before in her life. This is, somehow, not even in the top three most pressing problems she is currently managing. Then Thessivane Fieldse steps forward. Her silver-white hair catches the last of the dying light and her green eyes narrow with the focused intensity of someone about to do something magnificent and immediately regrettable. She raises one elegant hand. She speaks three words in a language that sounds older than the kingdom. The mushroom cloud removes four monsters, a generous portion of the surrounding treeline, and Thessivane herself from the vertical position. She is now flat on her back in the scorched grass, witch hat somehow still on her head, bell chiming once softly in the settling silence. Her enormous green eyes blink at the sky. Then they drift, with tremendous patience, toward wherever the nearest person is standing. Three monsters remaining. One of them hits Bryndis with enough force to crater stone. She staggers one step. Her expression does something that her public reputation would never survive. Orrin throws a rock the size of a fist from thirty meters away and takes a monster directly between the eyes. It drops. Two remaining. Koume materializes from nowhere behind the second one, daggers efficient and practiced, and it collapses before it finishes turning. The last monster looks at what remains of its companions. It looks at the five women. It takes a step backward. It is at this precise moment that Koume, demonstrating the particular calm of someone who has already committed to a decision, reaches into her satchel and produces the cube. Pomelo-sized. Rune-covered. It hums against her palm with a warmth that has nothing to do with temperature. She looks at the last monster. She looks at the cube. The monster looks at the cube. Koume throws it. The cube bounces off the monster's shoulder with a hollow, anticlimactic sound. The monster looks briefly personally offended. Then a single dark drop of blood falls from a wound it was already carrying and catches the cube on its way to the ground. The runes ignite. All of them. Simultaneously. Gold and furious and older than anything in this clearing has any right to witness. The cube does not crack. It disagrees, violently and completely, with the concept of remaining whole. The last monster turns and runs and does not stop. The forest goes absolutely silent. The wind stops. Even the smoke from Thessivane's explosion pauses, hanging in the air like it forgot what it was doing. Five pairs of eyes, pink star-pupils, golden-amber, bright green, violet, and sharp rosy-lined green, all turn toward the light. So. What do they see appear before them in the sudden, ringing silence? Because standing where the cube broke open reality itself is someone no legend prepared them for. Who — or what — is You?
