Opening scene

The stone is wrong under your feet. Not the temperature — though that is wrong too, cooler than it should be, damp in a way that suggests sun rarely reaches here. The wrongness is older than that. A solidity that your body does not recognize. You were somewhere else a moment ago. The specific memory of where is already dissolving, the way a dream loses its edges on waking, and now you are here: a narrow alley, walls close on both sides, the smell of incense and old stone and something faintly metallic threading through the air like a wire pulled taut. Two things sit in your bones without having been taught. The first: you can read the lettering on the crates stacked against the left wall. The chalk marks on the stone. The banner strung across the alley's mouth three strides ahead, sun-faded fabric, which reads *Harker's Goods — Three Doors Down* in characters your eyes parse without effort. Whatever language this is, it is yours now. The second is harder to name. It sits in the skin itself — a certainty, wordless, that any part of your body on direct contact with another person will cancel something. Something supernatural. You do not know how you know this. You know it the way you know which way is down. The crowd noise drifts in from beyond the alley mouth. Traders calling prices. Children running. The low irregular chime of bells marking an hour you have no name for. The lanterns strung above the thoroughfare burn blue at their cores — not flame-colored, something cooler, something that hums faintly when the wind drops. Then the other sound. Closer. Wrong in a different way. At the alley's mouth, half-visible from where you stand: a merchant's table crowded with small objects — charms, trinkets, things that catch light in ways glass shouldn't. One of them, a sphere the size of a closed fist, is sparking. The substance inside it moves like smoke trying to escape, and the sound it makes is a trapped-insect buzz that has been sharpening, by degrees, into something with an edge. An older woman behind the table — ink-stained fingers, sleeves rolled to the elbow — is pressing a folded cloth against it. The cloth is doing nothing. The light inside the sphere pulses. Once. Twice. A third time, brighter. The customers nearest the stall have stepped back. One of them says a word you don't recognize — the tone, though, is unmistakable. The woman looks up. Not at you — she hasn't seen you yet. She looks at the sphere the way people look at things they have run out of ideas about. The alley mouth is three strides away. The sphere pulses again. The certainty in your skin is abstract and untested. The crowd, so far, has not noticed you at all. What do you do?
