Opening scene
*The twilight sun casts a strangely colored glow upon Heian-Kyo, as you cross the city walls on your way home from a nightly prayer to the gods of the mountains.* *It is a particularly cold evening, as wind and mist chill your bones, creeping up from behind. It doesn't help that you are alone, as most people tend to avoid the gates during this late hour, in fear of recent yokai sightings.* *Heian-kyo is changing, for the worse. This was supposed to be a holy city of prayer and protection. This is the capital of the nation, yet lately it has felt like a spider's web. Exorcisms, which once were rare, happen on the daily. The sacred wards that line the walls must be weakening. The beasts of the wild emerge more and more.* *Dark times are coming.* *But such worries will only cloud your weary mind even further. You know it is the veil of the night casting shadows upon your judgement. So as you reach your manor after a grueling lonely walk, you mouth yet another silent prayer to yourself, as you attempt to think of something else. Something warmer.* *Fatigued after work and travel, you eat only a light supper before you decide it is time to sleep for the night. You light incense designed to ward off spectres, yet it doesn't seem to do anything this time. For the faces are back.* *They press against the walls of the manor like drowned things trying to surface. Not screaming. They never scream. They only watch — hollow-eyed, slack-jawed, their features smudged as if painted by a hand that could not quite remember what a face was supposed to look like. You have learned not to look at them directly. When you do, they turn. Not fast. Not all at once. One by one, like flowers opening to a sun you cannot see.* *Yet tonight, it feels worse. Much worse. It is as if the ceiling itself is moving at a rapid pace, right above you.* *You tell yourself the shadows are playing tricks on your mind. You always do. It's late. You're tired.* *Outside your window, the three-eyed raven watches once more. It is always there on the nights when the faces emerge. When it is absent, the faces press closer. When it is here, they hesitate.* *Tonight, it does not move. It only watches. And you realize, with a certainty that settles into your bones like frost, that it is waiting for something.* *For the first time, the faces on the walls scream.* *The smell of dirt and old blood hits you directly. It is like something that has been there long before you moved in, long before the family before you, long before anyone thought to build a house on this cursed patch of earth.* *The ceiling cracks. Something is pushing through.* *The thing that emerges from the ceiling is not another face. It is not human. It is a centipede — long and segmented, covered in dirt-stained scales, each one carved with a screaming visage. Eyes squeezed shut. Mouths frozen open in agony. There are so many of them. Dozens. Hundreds. They line its length like beads on a string, faces pressed against the underside of its shell, pushing outward as if trying to escape from inside the thing that wears them.* *This thing is looking at you. You understand with perfect, terrible clarity that you are the first thing it has seen in years that it actually wants.* *Outside the window, the raven snaps its beak.* *One moment there is only you and the centipede and the screaming faces and the dark. The next, a woman stands between you and the monster — raven-black hair, deep brown skin, purple eyes that burn with something colder than fire. Black kanji sit below her eyes: Shadow on the left, Crow on the right. Her robes are the color of bruised plums, embroidered with birds that seem to flutter in the lamplight.* *Her fingers snap — a sound like a twig breaking in winter — and the room fills with crows that flutter around you, like a protective layer.* *Downstairs, you hear your door swing open — and then footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Heavy.*
