Destination Pending
You must survive a cursed road trip to Otakon as reality turns every mile into disaster.
Plot
STORY FILE · DARK COMEDY ROAD TRIP THE HIGHWAY WANTS BLOOD A cursed Otakon road trip survival comedy where the GPS keeps lying, traffic keeps dying, and reality has decided the RAV4 is the problem. — PREMISE — You is supposed to be heading to Otakon with Samantha Freeman and May Yoshine in a midnight black Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. The plan is simple: leave St. Louis on Thursday, survive the long drive, reach the Embassy Suites / DC Hilton hotel parking garage near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and still have enough sanity left for the convention weekend. The normal route is already miserable: roughly 13 and a half hours, about 817 miles, tolls, time-zone weirdness, fuel stops, bathroom breaks, food stops, traffic, and three people slowly losing patience inside the same SUV. Then reality starts acting wrong. At first, it feels like normal road trip garbage: bad drivers, weird gas station strangers, wrong exits, construction, snack arguments, and GPS reroutes that feel personally insulting. But the closer the group gets to Washington, DC, the worse the road becomes. Accidents happen too perfectly, storms move like they are following the RAV4, rest stops become suspicious, traffic patterns stop making sense, and every mile starts feeling like the universe is trying to stage a murder scene. — THE ROUTE — The road trip begins at a modern upper-middle-class apartment complex in the Central West End district of St. Louis, Missouri. From there, the route follows the I-70 eastward path toward Washington, DC, passing through long highway stretches, toll roads, rest stops, gas stations, city traffic, and whatever cursed nonsense decides to appear between Missouri and the hotel parking garage. Start: Central West End, St. Louis, Missouri Main travel spine: I-64 E / US-40 E into I-70 E Route continuation: PA-43 S, US-40 E, I-68 E, and I-270 S Final approach: Whitehurst Freeway NW, K St NW, and DC hotel district streets Destination: Embassy Suites / DC Hilton hotel parking garage near Otakon The goal is not to explore the convention. The goal is to reach the parking garage alive, park the RAV4, and finally let the road trip end before the actual Otakon weekend begins. — DICE ROLL MECHANICS — This story uses Dungeon Mind dice mechanics for uncertain outcomes. Whenever driving danger, weather, vehicle damage, injuries, police encounters, social confrontations, rest stops, resource use, or disasters matter, the DM rolls a d20 and adds the relevant stat modifier. A Natural 20 is an automatic success where reality briefly helps the protagonists, catastrophe may be avoided, and absurd survival moments can happen. A Natural 1 is an automatic catastrophic failure where severe injury, major vehicle damage, chain-reaction disasters, or even protagonist death may occur. Difficulty usually scales from easy checks around DC 8, moderate checks around DC 12, difficult checks around DC 16, severe checks around DC 20, and near-impossible checks around DC 24. Smart planning, teamwork, preparation, tools, and calm decision-making can help; panic, fatigue, hunger, storms, darkness, damaged vehicle systems, and multiple disasters at once can make rolls worse. — TONE — This is a dark comedy disaster survival story. Expect vulgar road-trip arguments, relationship chaos, violent chain reactions, absurd disasters, Final Destination-style environmental danger, and NPCs getting destroyed by the universe while the main cast barely survives through luck, skill, bad decisions, and dice rolls. The protagonists are hard to kill, but not immortal. The RAV4 is reliable, but not indestructible. Every rest stop can save the party or make the trip worse. Every detour can buy time or throw them into something more cursed. — MAIN CAST — → Samantha Freeman. ER nurse, crisis stabilizer, dark humor specialist, and the person most likely to fight a problem directly. → May Yoshine. Streamer, fitness creator, emotional glue, social chaos engine, and morale support during disasters. → Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. The group’s vehicle, shelter, inventory container, fuel tracker, charging hub, and unwilling disaster magnet. → You. The active protagonist-driver, either Immanuel Clarke or a custom character chosen by the player. — WIN CONDITION — Reach the Embassy Suites / DC Hilton hotel parking garage near Otakon with at least one protagonist alive and the RAV4 operational enough to limp, crawl, coast, or barely park inside. THE DESTINATION IS PENDING. THE ROAD IS NOT.
Opening scene
Thursday morning starts in the Central West End with the RAV4 backed into the apartment complex parking spot, rear hatch open, luggage stacked like the group is evacuating the state instead of driving to an anime convention. Samantha Freeman is already outside in her travel outfit, leaning against the SUV with a coffee in one hand and the expression of someone who has survived overnight ER shifts and therefore refuses to respect ordinary road-trip stress. May Yoshine is still deciding whether one more bag counts as “necessary,” recording a quick clip on her phone while pretending she is not the reason half the cargo space is gone. The GPS shows the bad news in clean, emotionless text: roughly 13 and a half hours, about 817 miles, tolls, and a different time zone waiting at the end. Central West End to Washington, DC. I-64 E / US-40 E, then I-70 E for the long haul. The final destination is the Embassy Suites / DC Hilton hotel parking garage near Otakon. The trip starts Thursday. Otakon does not really start until Friday evening. There should be enough time. That thought lasts until the RAV4 dash cam flickers on by itself for half a second, the GPS recalculates without being touched, and the first route warning appears: “Destination pending.” Samantha lowers her coffee. “Why the hell the car sayin’ that like a threat?” May stops recording. “Okay. That was either a software bug or the universe being dramatic.” The RAV4 sits there, silent and normal, because it is just a vehicle. Probably. The highway is waiting. What do you do first?
