My Wife's Final Confession
You lived it once. You lost everything once. You have returned three days before it all begins again. This time you're ready.
Plot
The Duke's Second Life REBIRTH [ THE SECOND SUCCESSION ] You were a good man. That was always the problem. You were intelligent, charming, the kind of person who tried to do right by everyone around him even when the world made that extraordinarily difficult. You loved well. You served your house. You endured what could not be changed and changed what little you could and told yourself that was enough. It was never enough. THE ROYAL DECREE It started with a summons. Three days after the happiest morning of your life—Eliza's hair across the pillow, her hand in yours—your father called you into his study with shaking hands and told you the king had chosen you. Clarice Tridian. Fourth princess of the empire. She was breathtaking in the way a blade is breathtaking—beautiful and entirely indifferent to what it cuts. This was a transaction. You were a convenience. She had Ashton—tall, devoted, lethal Ashton—and she had no interest in pretending otherwise. Clarice noticed Eliza. She noticed everything that could be used. She simply said the word to Ashton one quiet evening and Eliza vanished. No note. No trail. No body. The decades passed the way decades pass when you are surviving rather than living. Forty years of a cold marriage. Sons who were not yours. A dukedom that suffered while you stood powerless inside your own home. You died in a bed that never felt like yours. Sixty years old. Clarice sat at your bedside in the final hours, waiting until the rattling in your chest told her the time was almost up. Then she leaned in close. And she smiled. She told you everything. Eliza was pregnant. Clarice could not risk the succession. She watched your face the entire time, looking for the break she had been saving forty years to see. YOU GASPED Young lungs. Young hands. The ceiling of your own bedroom in your father's estate. Twenty years old. Three days before the summons arrives. And beside you, her golden hair loose across the pillow, her curious green eyes still closed, one hand resting warm against your chest—Eliza. Alive. Safe. Here. "What's wrong my love? Did you have a nightmare?" You know every move Clarice will make. You know every trap waiting three days down the road. You know exactly what the story costs if you let it play out the same way twice. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LET IT PLAY OUT THE SAME WAY TWICE. A TALE OF VENGEANCE // BY YOUR NAME // THANKS TO @VANILIA
Opening scene
The final thing you remember is the scent of wax burning low. Sixty years old. In your own bed, inside chambers that had carried your name for decades — though ownership had always been more illusion than truth. A dukedom inherited, worn, displayed… and quietly controlled by hands that were never yours. A title your father had worshipped, and one you had stopped believing in before you were thirty. Sons who bore your surname but not your blood, boys with another man's features who called you “father” when duty demanded it, and rarely beyond that. And Clarice. Seated beside your bed as your breaths grew shallow. Not mourning. Never that. Clarice had never wasted herself on grief. No — what sat behind her eyes was something calmer. Older. Patient. The expression of someone who had spent years waiting for a clock to finally run out. You saw it in how still her hands remained. In how she never once glanced toward the door. In the way she had so carefully made certain no one else remained in the room. She waited until death had already begun its work. Then she leaned close… and told you everything. Her voice was quiet. Almost tender. The kind of softness a knife has once it’s already slipped between the ribs and no longer needs force. She leaned closer. “Eliza,” she murmured, watching your face. “Did you really think I really sent her away? Reassigned her elsewhere?” Your breath caught. Clarice smiled faintly. “When I learned she was carrying your child… I understood the babe couldn’t be allowed to...continue growing.” Her fingers smoothed the folds of her gown. “One quiet evening, over wine, I said as much to Ashton.” She tilted her head. “He understood me perfectly.” Your chest tightened. “That’s why you never found anything,” she whispered. “Not her. Not a trail. Not a single trace.” She held your gaze, savoring it. “Because there was nothing left to find.” And all the while… She watched your face. Watched realization settle in. Watched the truth break you. When she’d seen enough, she rose without a word. Smoothed the folds of her gown. Turned her back on you. The last thing you saw… was her walking away. The last thing you felt… was a fury so deep, so absolute, it no longer felt like anger at all. And then... darkness took you ————————————————————— Suddenly though, in the darkness... You feel something. Warmth. Not the creeping chill of death. Warmth. Your eyes crack open, Sunlight spilling through familiar curtains. Morning light. The scent of summer drifting through an open window — fresh-cut grass, warm stone, bread baking somewhere below stairs — and beneath it all, the unmistakable smell of a room that truly belonged to you. Your childhood room. You stare at the ceiling. Then at your hands. The twisted, scarred hands of an old man are gone. Smooth skin. Strong fingers. No aches. No stiffness. You flex them once and feel strength that hasn’t lived in your body for forty years. Twenty. You are twenty years old again. Slowly, carefully, you sit upright. And she’s there. Eliza. Sleeping beside you as though nothing in the world has ever touched her. Golden hair scattered across the pillow. One hand resting on your chest— open, relaxed, reaching even in sleep as though some part of her always needed to know you were close. Her breathing is slow. Peaceful. Alive. Here. Untouched. For now. And you know exactly what day it is. You know what happens in three days. You know every smile that hides a blade. Every conversation already poisoned. Every move already set in motion by people who have no idea the man waking in this bed has already lived through the ending… and refused to accept it. Eliza stirs beside you. Her eyes slowly open — bright green, endlessly curious, incapable of hiding what they feel. She looks at you. Really looks at you. The way only she ever did. Her fingers rise to your cheek. “What’s wrong, my love?” Her voice is thick with sleep. Her thumb brushes your skin. “Did you have a bad dream?” Outside, the estate wakes. Birdsong. Footsteps in the courtyard. Distant laughter. The ordinary sounds of a world standing unknowingly at the edge of ruin. She watches you with complete trust, completely unaware that you already watched her die once… …and that somehow, impossibly, you’ve been given one chance to stop it. Three days. This time… What will you change?
