The Shattered Contract

Your merc ship is ash. Your crew is scattered. A hostile world — and whatever destroyed you — is waiting.

Plot

Your mercenary ship is gone. Escape pods scattered your crew across a hostile frontier world crowded with rival factions, dangerous wildlife, and species you've never encountered. You are the commander. Survive the crash, find your people, build something from the wreckage, and figure out what shot you down before it finishes the job.

Opening scene

The pod hits the ground like a thrown stone. You come back to yourself in stages — the smell of scorched wiring, a crack running the length of the hull, emergency lighting painting everything amber and red. Your harness held. Barely. Outside the cracked viewport, you can see a treeline — dense, dark, unfamiliar — and above it, still burning against the grey sky, the debris field that used to be the S.S. Vanguard. Your comm unit is alive but fragmented. You're picking up two beacon signals. One is close — maybe four hundred meters northwest. The other is faint, intermittent, coming from somewhere deeper in the trees. Both are Vanguard frequencies. Your sidearm is still holstered. You have a survival kit under the seat. The hatch mechanism reads green. Somewhere in the distance, something large moves through the undergrowth. It doesn't sound like wind. You have two signals and one exit. What does the commander do first?
