The Hero Party Left Me in the Monster Nursery
They left you to die in a monster nursery. The hatchlings crawled into your arms instead.
Plot
The Nursery Is Full of Tiny Teeth Dragon hatchlings, slime budlings, manticore cubs, basilisk babies, griffin chicks, mimic spawn, owlbear cubs, cerberus pups, and stranger little things wait in the warm dark. Some are hungry. Some are frightened. Some have already decided you belong to them. They Were Supposed to Eat You The hero party locked you inside the nursery and left you for dead. But the hatchlings did not see prey. They saw warmth, food, blood, softness, safety, and maybe the first person who did not raise a blade at them. Their Mother Is Listening The nursery is protected. Blood, crying, broken seals, stolen scent, and frightened hatchlings do not go unnoticed. If the mother believes you harmed them, you die. If she believes you protected them, you may owe something older than gold. Tiny Monsters of the Nursery Each little monster has instincts, needs, fears, and trouble attached. They are not pets. They are not loot. They are young dungeon-born creatures with claws, magic, opinions, and very poor judgment. Cute Is Not Safe Calm a crying hatchling. Hide from a furious mother. Bargain with sentient monsters. Use the brood for survival. Protect them from adventurers. Flee alone. Build trust. Earn dungeon-law debt. Or become the one person the surface abandoned and the nursery chose. They locked you in with monsters. The monsters decided you were theirs.
Opening scene
You hit the nursery floor hard enough to taste blood. The stone door slams shut behind you. On the other side, the hero’s voice echoes through the sealed crack. “Sorry,” Sir Caedren says, not sounding sorry enough. “We need time.” The healer says your name once. Someone else tells her to keep moving. Then the party’s footsteps retreat into the dungeon, taking the torchlight, the map, the healing potions, and every promise they ever made with them. The seal on the door burns blue. LOCKED FROM OUTSIDE. You are alone in the dark. No. Not alone. Something cracks. Across the nursery chamber, one of the eggs moves. Then another. Then six more. They are not bird eggs. They are not reptile eggs. They are too large, too warm, and covered in soft pulsing veins of dungeon-light. They rest in mossy stone nests, tucked between old bones, shed scales, torn banners, and tiny blankets stitched from stolen adventurer cloaks. A little horn punches through the nearest shell. Then a wet snout. Then two furious golden eyes. The hatchling tumbles out with a squeak, all claws, tail, wobbling legs, and needle teeth too large for its face. It shakes slime from its ears, sneezes sparks, and turns toward the scent of your blood. It opens its mouth. It should scream. It should bite. It should call every monster in the nursery down on you. Instead, it sniffs your bleeding hand, blinks twice, and crawls straight into your palm. The tiny thing presses its warm, horned head against your thumb. “Mrrp,” it declares. A second egg cracks. A third hatchling rolls out, purple-scaled and round as a dumpling, dragging half its shell behind it like a helmet. It sees the first hatchling in your hand, gasps with scandalized little dignity, and waddles toward you faster. “Mine?” it chirps. The first hatchling bares its needle teeth. “MINE.” The purple one bites your bootlace and begins dragging your foot toward the nests. From the far side of the nursery, a slime hatchling leaks out of its cracked shell, forms two enormous eyes, and immediately tries to hide inside your sleeve. Then all three freeze. Something huge breathes outside the sealed nursery door. The sound is low, wet, and close. The first hatchling’s tiny claws tighten around your finger. The purple one whispers, very clearly, “Mama.” A shadow passes beneath the door. The hatchlings look at you. The door seal flickers. The first hatchling opens its mouth again, this time not to bite — to cry loudly enough for whatever waits outside to hear. Your blood is on the floor. The hero party is gone. Three baby monsters have decided you are safe. And their mother is on the other side of the door.
