Opening scene
The world drags upside down behind you. Stone. Mud. Blood. Every pull of the rope around your ankles sends another shock of pain through your body as the oni hauling you across the mountain path laugh amongst themselves like dragging battered prisoners home is just another evening chore. Your armor is ruined. Your wrists are raw. Half your body feels numb from being dragged flat on your back for what feels like hours. But you are alive. Which honestly feels more insulting than merciful. Your squad wasn’t. You still remember the final moments clearly: the line collapsing, screams buried beneath war drums, towering oni warriors crashing through shattered shields while the surviving officers screamed retreat. You didn’t retreat. Even after the others fell, you kept fighting. Apparently that had interested them. The oni dragging you gives the rope another brutal yank. “You humans are weird,” she mutters. “Most stop moving eventually.” A second oni laughs. “This one bit Hagar’s hand.” “You swung an axe at his face while he was trying to kill me,” you rasp. That earns a bark of laughter from several nearby warriors. The camp finally comes into view beyond the cliffs. Massive black iron structures rise between heavy hide tents stretched across carved bone frames. Fires roar across the settlement while armored oni move everywhere carrying crates, dragging beast carcasses, sharpening weapons, shouting across the camp. The entire place feels alive. Violent. Loud. Overwhelming. And the moment you’re dragged through the gates, people start staring. Some laugh. Some look disappointed you survived. Others simply watch curiously. The rope suddenly jerks sideways. Your body slams painfully across rough stone before stopping near a massive circular arena carved directly into the center of the encampment. The crowd noise is deafening. Inside the pit below, two prisoners desperately fight while oni spectators scream bets and insults down at them. One of the prisoners collapses seconds later after taking a brutal hit to the ribs. The crowd erupts. “Pathetic!” “He lasted longer than the last one!” “Barely!” You’re dragged closer to the edge of the arena. Above the pit, seated lazily across a massive throne-like chair carved from horn and iron, a tall crimson-skinned oni woman watches the fights with sharp golden eyes and complete confidence. Dark tattoos crawl across her shoulders and arms beneath layered war fabrics while black-red horns curve through long dark hair tied behind her. Kaorai. Even sitting down, she somehow feels like she’s towering over everyone nearby. A few steps away, another oni woman is arguing with three laborers while holding several wooden inventory tablets against her chest. Bronze-red skin, shorter swept-back horns, ash-brown braid, sleeves rolled up like she hasn’t slept properly in days. “Then count them again,” she snaps irritably. “If supplies vanished, somebody stole them.” One of the workers notices you being dragged in. “The human officer?” Reina barely glances over. “He conscious?” “Unfortunately.” “Good. Conscious workers complain less after the first week.” Leaning upside down from part of the arena railing nearby is a silver-haired oni woman grinning at you like she just found tonight’s entertainment. Her thick curved horns sweep backward through messy white hair decorated with feathers and beast fangs. Sorya. “Oh, I like this one already,” she laughs. “Look at that glare.” “You say that every time,” Reina mutters. “And I’m usually right.” Near the rear of the platform, partially hidden beneath hanging charms and flickering shrine lanterns, sits a pale oni woman in layered ceremonial robes quietly observing everything. Unlike the others, she says nothing immediately. Soft violet eyes study you carefully beneath elegant black horns curving back through silver-blue hair. Mirune. The unsettling part isn’t that she’s watching you. It’s how calm she looks doing it. Then a heavy metallic sound hits nearby. You turn just in time to see an enormous oni warrior stepping toward the arena edge through the crowd. Scarred arms. Massive frame. Dark red skin covered in old battle marks. Golden eyes drag slowly across you with immediate disappointment. Vexa. “That’s the officer?” she says flatly. “Looks breakable.” Sorya laughs loudly. “That’s because he’s human.” “Then why drag him all the way back here?” Kaorai finally speaks from her throne. “Because he kept standing.” The arena quiets slightly. Kaorai’s golden eyes lock onto yours fully now. “You watched your squad die,” she says calmly. “And still kept fighting.” Her expression doesn’t soften. If anything, she looks more curious than impressed. “Why?” Before you can answer, rough hands suddenly grab the rope around your ankles and cut it loose. Your legs hit the ground hard. The crowd begins shouting again immediately. “Throw him in!” “Bet he dies fast!” “Five silver says he cries first!” Vexa folds her arms. “He won’t last long.” Sorya grins wider. “I think he might surprise you.” Reina sighs tiredly without looking up from her supply tablets. “If he survives, somebody else is feeding him. I’m already short on grain.” Then suddenly— massive hands grab your shoulders from behind and violently shove you forward. Straight into the arena.
