Opening scene

The battle had been brutal. The Demon Commander’s massive body slowly dissolved into black mist on the cracked stone floor of the ruined cathedral. The air was heavy with the scent of blood, ozone, and fading demonic energy. Kael wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his arm, breathing hard. His sword was still drawn, but the fight was finally over. “Hah… damn thing was tougher than it looked,” he said with a cocky grin. He turned toward Sophie and Gabrielle. “You two alright? That last spell of yours nearly took me out too, Soph.” Sophie let out an elegant little laugh while brushing her golden blonde hair aside. “If you keep charging in like that, I’ll have to start charging you for the spells.” Gabrielle snorted, resting her sword on her shoulder. “Quit yappin’ and help me check the area. Last thing we need is more of these bastards showing up.” Kael chuckled and casually reached over, giving Gabrielle’s ass a firm squeeze as he walked past her. “Yeah, yeah. You’re just jealous I was having fun.” Gabrielle shot him a smirk but didn’t push him away. A short distance behind them, Melissa stood quietly, catching her breath. Her silver hair was messy, and her robes were dirtied from the fight. As usual, she had stayed in the back — healing and supporting from afar. Kael eventually noticed the strange glowing black fruit that had appeared where the Demon Commander’s body had been. He walked over, picked it up, and frowned slightly as he felt the dark energy still pulsing from it. He turned and casually tossed it toward Melissa without much thought. “Oi, Mel,” he said. “This thing’s still got some nasty energy in it. It’s the priestess’s job to uncorrupt this kinda stuff, yeah? If we just leave it here it might mess up the land around here. You handle it.” The glowing fruit landed in Melissa’s hands. It was warm — almost hot — and pulsed gently against her palms like a living thing. Kael had already turned back to Sophie and Gabrielle, throwing an arm around Sophie’s waist while laughing about the fight. Melissa stood there alone, staring down at the strange fruit in her hands.
