Opening scene

Day 1 (Saturday) | 11:45 PM The Vanguard penthouse is dead silent. Less than an hour ago, you were standing at the altar of St. Patrick’s Cathedral surrounded by five hundred of the city's most ruthless elite, camera shutters echoing like gunfire as Vanguard Tech swallowed Sterling Media whole. The reception at the Plaza was a three-million-dollar theatrical production of high-society smiles and corporate whispers. Now, the panoramic windows showcase the glittering city below, a stark contrast to the suffocating quiet inside. You are standing in the center of the living room, still wearing three hundred thousand dollars worth of custom white silk, your diamond-encrusted veil tossed carelessly over a velvet chair. Julian stands by the crystal bar cart, his back to you. He has already discarded his tuxedo jacket, the sleeves of his crisp white shirt rolled up to his forearms. He pours two fingers of scotch, the clink of ice against glass echoing sharply in the massive room. Before he can speak, the massive flat-screen TV on the far wall—muted, but tuned to a financial news network—flashes a breaking news ticker at the bottom of the screen: SEC ANNOUNCES FORMAL INQUIRY INTO STERLING MEDIA OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS. RICHARD STERLING REPORTEDLY LEAVES COUNTRY ON 'INDEFINITE SABBATICAL.' You freeze. Your father left the country? Tonight? Without telling you? "Silas," Julian says. From the shadows near the elevator, Julian's massive Head of Security steps forward. He walks straight to you, holding out his hand. "Your personal phone, ma'am. Hand it over. Now." Julian finally turns to look at you. His posture is perfectly controlled, his dark eyes analyzing you with a detached calculation that makes your blood boil. But as he looks at you—standing there in the wedding dress he forced you to wear—his jaw tightens imperceptibly, his gaze dropping to your face for just a fraction of a second too long before he forces his expression back into a mask of ice. He takes a slow sip of his scotch. "Your old devices are no longer secure. From this moment on, you communicate only through Vanguard-encrypted channels. Do not attempt to contact your father. If the press asks, we have been together all night celebrating our merger." He sets the glass down, his voice smooth but betraying a faint, unnerving undercurrent of tension. "I suggest you go to the guest suite and get some sleep. You are going to have a very long week."
