You knew the sound she made when she was almost there โ that specific catch in her breath, the way her nails found your shoulders and held on like she needed the anchor, the way she said your name like it was the only word she currently had access to. You'd been working toward that sound for twenty minutes and you'd just gotten there, her thighs pressed against your hips, her back arched off the bed, her mouth open around something that was almost the word yes โ And then the light happened. It was not a subtle light. It was the kind of light that had opinions. It came from nowhere, filled everything, and relocated you both mid-motion to somewhere that was very much not your bedroom. The cobblestones are cold against your knees. The sky has two moons. Ayano is still in your lap. She looks up at the moons. She looks down at the situation. She looks back at you with an expression that is doing several things at once โ residual heat, genuine outrage, and the specific face she makes when something has interrupted her and she intends to discuss it. "Babe." Her voice is still slightly wrecked. She doesn't seem to notice. "Babe, I was literally right there." You are in Vareth's lower district. You do not know this yet. What you know is that the cobblestones are cold, Ayano's hair is destroyed, her dress is on in the technical sense only, and there are three people standing in front of a building approximately ten meters away watching this unfold. Ayano has not noticed the three people. Ayano is still on the subject of being right there. "Like, sooo close, babe, I cannot believe โ " she gestures vaguely at the sky, at the two moons, at the general concept of interdimensional transportation โ "whatever THIS is, it has terrible timing, oh my gosh." She shifts in your lap with absolutely zero awareness of the audience and you become very aware that her dress has not been corrected. "Can we just โ I mean we're already โ " "...Excuse me." The voice comes from the direction of the building. You look up. Standing in front of the crooked Iron Crown sign is an elf. Tall, light blue-haired, arms folded with the energy of someone who has been waiting for forty minutes and found the wait instructive. She is looking at you the way someone looks at a structural assessment โ cataloguing, adjusting estimates, filing the result. Her gaze moves from you to Ayano to the specific geometry of the current situation. Something moves behind her eyes. It is not quite anything you can name. She has already named it internally and moved on. "You're the guild leader candidate," she says. It is not entirely a question. She turns and walks inside without waiting for confirmation. To her left, sitting on a barrel with a wine cup, is a woman with dark horns curving back from her temples and the resting expression of someone watching a play she's already seen but still finds mildly entertaining. She raises her cup in your direction. Slow. Unhurried. Her eyes move over you and Ayano with the thoroughness of someone conducting a professional assessment and enjoying it. "Hm." A long pause. A slow sip. "Bold entrance." Her gaze settles on you specifically, over the rim of the cup. The corner of her mouth moves. "I've seen worse." Another sip. "Much worse, actually. You're doing fine." She does not move from the barrel. Behind her, slightly obscured, is a young man with silver hair and the expression of someone who absolutely did not get enough warning. He sees you first. Then he sees Ayano โ specifically, the state of Ayano, the flushed face, the technical dress situation, the way she is still very much in your lap โ and he makes a sound like a man whose brain has encountered a file it cannot open. He looks at the sky. He looks at the second moon. He looks at a very specific cobblestone near his left foot that has done nothing wrong and does not deserve this level of attention. "I โ sorry โ we weren't โ the quest board said there'd be a candidate and I โ " He stops. Swallows. Tries again. "I'm Reed. I'm the healer. I'm going to โ I'll just โ " He points at the door. "Inside. I'll be. Inside." From inside, without looking back: "Reed." Reed: "Yes, I'm coming, I'm already โ yes." He disappears through the door at a speed that is not quite running. Ayano watches him go. Then she turns back to you, untroubled, and cups your face in both hands the way she does when she wants your complete attention. "Babe." She tilts her head. "Do you know those people?" You do not know those people. "Okay so we should probably figure that out," she says, nodding seriously, "but also โ " she glances down, glances back up, raises one eyebrow โ "like, we're already here, and the cobblestones are actually not that bad โ " The woman on the barrel makes a sound into her wine cup that might be a laugh. --- You do not become guild leader of Iron Crown in a single moment. You become guild leader of Iron Crown because Lustriel sits you down at the one functional desk, places a ledger in front of you, and explains the situation with the precision of someone who has rehearsed this speech and is relieved to finally give it. The guild has three members. No completed quests. A building they technically don't own. An E-rank charter that lapses in thirty days if no quests are logged. And no leader, until approximately now. Lustriel folds her hands on the desk. "We need someone who can make decisions," she says. A pause. "Preferably someone who will still be here tomorrow." She glances briefly toward the door, where Ayano has gone to explore the building and can be heard making sounds of discovery in the next room. "We are flexible on other criteria." Katherine, from her new barrel in the corner: "I voted for just seeing what happened if we left the charter empty." A slow sip. "I was outvoted." She looks at you. "For what it's worth, you're more interesting than the last candidate." Another sip. "He ran away before she finished talking. You're still here. That's something." From the next room, Ayano: "BABE. Babe, come look, there's a whole second floor, oh my gosh this place has SO much potential โ " Reed, who has recovered approximately sixty percent of his composure, leans toward you slightly. "She's great, right?" he says, with the sincerity of a man who has known her for eleven minutes. "Really great. Really positive energy. Good for guild morale, I think." Lustriel looks at Reed. Reed straightens up. "Sorry. You were saying." You say yes. You're not entirely sure when you decide โ somewhere between Lustriel's flat competence and Katherine's slow smile and Reed's inexplicable optimism and the sound of Ayano's voice carrying down the stairs like she's already redecorating a building you don't own yet. But you say yes, and Lustriel nods once like she already knew, and writes your name at the top of the ledger in clean, precise letters. Guild Leader: You. Guild: Iron Crown. Rank: E. Fund: 47 gold. It's not much. But it's yours.
