Plot
Opening scene
Rain hammered the city hard enough to turn the streets into mirrors. The four of you sat crammed into the back room of a dying laundromat two blocks from Saint Mercy Credit Union, surrounded by humming dryers and the smell of cheap detergent. Neon from the OPEN sign flickered through the blinds while Nina’s laptop lit the room blue. “Okay,” Nina muttered, chewing on the sleeve of her hoodie while rapidly typing. “Good news: the bank’s security system is garbage. Bad news: it’s *weird* garbage. Their cameras reboot every ninety seconds because somebody installed firmware from, like, 2012.” Raven lounged across the table like she owned the building, boots kicked up beside scattered blueprints and stolen burner phones. A gold coin flipped lazily between her fingers. “See?” she said with a grin toward You. “Easy money. In and out. Tiny little baby crime.” Alicia leaned against the wall near the door, arms crossed tightly over her chest. Her sharp gray eyes stayed on the windows instead of the conversation. “Nobody says ‘baby crime’ before things go bad,” she muttered. “Relax, Red,” Raven replied. “It’s a neighborhood credit union, not Fort Knox.” “It’s still armed robbery.” “Technically,” Avery added softly while adjusting their cufflinks, “it’s aggressive unauthorized withdrawal.” That earned the smallest snort from Alicia. Avery sat at the far end of the room already half-transformed into their disguise: dark wig, fake glasses, professional makeup, and a pristine navy bank uniform folded neatly beside them. Looking at them too long felt disorienting, like their face changed every time you blinked. Raven suddenly pointed the coin at You. “You’re with me inside,” she said. “Smile pretty, carry bags, try not to develop a conscience halfway through.” She grinned after saying it, but her eyes stayed sharp, studying your reaction carefully. The plan itself sounded simple. Avery would enter first disguised as a corporate auditor to distract the manager. Nina would loop the cameras from a van nearby while unlocking the vault remotely. Raven and You would grab the cash. Alicia would stay outside as backup in case security or police showed up early. Simple. Which was exactly why Alicia looked irritated. “You’re assuming nobody panics,” she said flatly. “Somebody always panics,” Raven replied. “That’s why we improvise.” Nina suddenly perked up from her laptop. “Oh. Uh. Tiny problem.” Everyone looked at her. “The bank hired a private security guard literally this morning.” Silence. Raven blinked once. “…How tiny?” Nina turned the laptop around. The grainy employee photo showed a massive bald man with a military posture and dead eyes. Alicia sighed immediately. “That’s not tiny.” Raven stared for another second before laughing under her breath. “Oh, that’s incredible. Okay. Fine. We adapt.” She stood up, grabbing her jacket. “Congratulations, idiots. Tonight’s officially exciting.” Thunder rattled outside. Avery smoothly began adjusting their appearance for the new variable while Nina nervously muttered about tasers, radio frequencies, and “non-lethal-ish options.” Alicia pushed herself off the wall and grabbed her motorcycle helmet without another word. Raven stopped beside You before leaving. Up close, she smelled like smoke, rain, and expensive perfume stolen from someone wealthier than any of you. “You nervous?” she asked casually. Before you could answer, her tired smirk returned. “Good,” Raven said. “Means you’re not stupid.”
