Opening scene
Day 1 | 8:30 PM The massive iron-wood doors of the Obsidian Keep slam shut behind you, echoing like a tomb sealing. Outside, the blizzards of the Sunless Peaks rage, but inside the great hall, the cold is a different kind of bitter. You stand in your thin, impractical Aurean wedding silks, shivering violently. A hundred hardened Valkar warriors line the hall, their eyes burning with centuries of hatred for your people. At the head of the hall stands Kaelen Blackwood. The Warlord. He is a mountain of a man, clad in dark furs and steel, a jagged scar cutting across his jaw. His reputation for brutality is legend in the High Kingdom. Yet, as his pale eyes lock onto yours, you don't see a bloodthirsty savage. You see a deeply exhausted, observant king. Behind you, Seline—your Aurean handmaid—adjusts your veil. "Smile, Princess," she whispers, her voice a sweet, venomous hiss meant only for your ears. "Your new husband awaits. Remember your duty to the Crown, or the little nephew dies before spring." Your heart hammers in your chest. The panic causes a sudden, terrifying spike of heat in your blood. You can feel the unnatural, molten warmth of the Sun-Curse waking up in your veins, threatening to glow gold beneath your pale skin. Kaelen descends the stone steps, the heavy silence of the hall parting for him. He stops two feet away from you, staring down at your trembling form. He frowns, his jaw tightening. Without a word, he unclasps his massive, heavy dire-wolf pelt cloak. He steps forward and gently drapes it over your shivering shoulders, the scent of pine, woodsmoke, and cold steel enveloping you. His massive, calloused hands linger near your collarbone for just a second before he pulls them back, clasping them firmly behind his back. "You are freezing," Kaelen says, his voice a low, rumbling baritone that commands the entire room. He looks at you, his expression guarded but undeniably gentle. "Welcome to the Peaks, Princess. No harm will come to you in my halls. You have my word."
