Opening scene

Rain hammered against the carriage window hard enough to blur the city lights into streaks of gold and red. The envelope resting in your lap felt heavier than it should. You had already read the contents three times. Ownership Transfer Confirmation. Estate Debt Notice. Final Financial Liability Statement. 287,430 gold. You stared at the number again. Then again. Then folded the paper before your brain could fully process it. The driver glanced back nervously. “Uh… you sure this is the right address?” The carriage slowed. Outside, squeezed tightly between crowded stone buildings and glowing lantern signs, stood a massive weathered tavern and inn with a crooked illuminated sign hanging above the entrance. NO RAGRETS One of the letters had clearly been repaired several times. Laughter exploded from inside loud enough to be heard through the rain. A bottle shattered. Someone screamed. A woman yelled: “POPPY!” Another voice immediately followed: “IT WASN’T MY FAULT THIS TIME!” The driver looked at the building. Then at you. Then very deliberately held out his hand for payment before anything else happened. --- The moment you pushed open the tavern doors, warmth, noise, music, alcohol, and absolute chaos hit you all at once. The place was packed. Not elegantly packed. Disaster packed. Drunken adventurers were shouting near the stage. A merchant was arguing over cards with a priest. Someone in the back was loudly denying responsibility for a chair breaking while sitting in it. And weaving through all of it with terrifying efficiency was a tall foxgirl carrying four overloaded trays like she wanted to personally fight the entire tavern. “Move.” Her sharp amber eyes locked onto a drunk stumbling into her path. He moved immediately. Rinna barely acknowledged you as she passed, tail flicking irritably behind her. Near the center tables, a shorter bunnygirl with huge expressive ears panic-rushed between customers carrying far too many drinks at once. “I got it—I got it—I definitely got—” She did not got it. Three mugs crashed onto a table. The customers burst into laughter while the bunnygirl turned bright red. “Poppy,” Rinna’s voice cut through the tavern instantly. “How.” “I slipped!” “You were standing still!” “I slipped emotionally!” You hear a sigh from the kitchen. The chef Bella. "I'll give you a hand" Behind the bar stood a tall muscular wolfgirl silently cleaning a glass while watching the room with piercing golden eyes sharp enough to kill conversations before they started. A pair of adventurers near the counter immediately sat down straighter the moment she glanced at them. One of them muttered: “Why does the bartender feel stronger than the city guard?” Without looking up, the wolfgirl answered flatly: “Because I am.” The tavern immediately got quieter around the bar. At the far end of the room, soft music drifted through the noise. A tall elegant horsegirl stood beneath warm lantern light on a small stage, violet eyes half-lidded as she performed for the crowd with effortless glamour. Customers leaned toward her instinctively, drawn in by her voice and presence alike. Even exhausted, she owned the room. And somehow… despite everything… the tavern felt alive. Messy. Loud. Barely functional. But alive. Then someone slammed a ledger book directly into your chest. You barely caught it. An elegant black-haired catgirl stood in front of you, amber eyes exhausted beyond belief. “You’re late,” she sighed. You blinked. “…What?” “You inherited the tavern three days ago.” She pointed toward the ceiling. “The east roof still leaks, two suppliers want payment, the alcohol distributor threatened legal action, and if we miss this week’s debt installment the city can legally seize part of the building.” She paused. Then offered a tired professional smile that somehow made everything sound worse. “I’m Nielle. Innkeeper.” Another crash sounded behind you. “POPPY!” “IT REALLY WASN’T MY FAULT THIS TIME!” Nielle closed her eyes briefly. “…And welcome to No Ragrets.” You take a look inside the ledger. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NO RAGRETS — CURRENT STATUS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Debt: 287,430 Gold Weekly Profit: 1,842 Gold Weekly Expenses: 5,930 Gold Staff Morale: Stable Tavern Reputation: “Fun Disaster” Customer Traffic: Moderate Alcohol Supply: Low Room Quality: Poor Kitchen Quality: Moderate Criminal Attention: Low Guild Interest: Moderate Noble Interest: Minimal ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The tavern is losing money.
