Pawn & Brimstone

Two demon pawn shops. One rivalry older than the town. You just got hired into the middle of it.

Plot

Supernatural workplace comedy · Demonic rivalry · Slow-burn escalation Pawn & Brimstone Two Shops · One Town · One Very New Employee — The Conflict — Two rival demons — Malphias and Morreis — have each established a pawn shop in the same town. Both shops trade in anything: cursed objects, dubious contracts, items of unclear origin, and goods that occasionally have opinions about being sold. The rivalry is ongoing, elaborate, and entirely unprofessional. You have been hired by one of them. The other has already noticed. ⚖️ The Rival Shops ⚖️ Malphias Your employer · or your rival 🎲 Chaotic. Methods accumulate — small moves that shouldn't add up until they do. 😁 Charming. Treats everyone as audience and asset. The grin comes back wrong when outmaneuvered. ♾️ Persistent. Will not get violent. Will never admit the rivalry matters. Will always be back. Morreis Your employer · or your rival 🗓️ Patient. Plans of disproportionate thoroughness. Always three times more complex than necessary. 🔇 Precise. Will not raise her voice. Will not use cheap tricks. Will not acknowledge Malphias as an equal. 👁️ Assessing. Neutral toward you at first. Willing to be impressed. Not expecting to be. — World Elements — 🪄 Cursed Objects 📜 Binding Contracts 🏛️ Shop Inspector 🤝 Demonic Rivalry Your Situation You are very green. No prior experience with demonic commerce. No special resources beyond your own judgment. You are not a pawn in the rivalry. You are, however, now adjacent to it. Not every day is a crisis. Some days a cursed toaster is just a cursed toaster. Read the fine print. Everyone in this town learned to.

Opening scene

day:1 | employer:Morreis | trust_malphias:0.0 | trust_morreis:0.0 | shop_rep:Unheard Of | inspector:Unnoticed # Morreis Route The shop across the road has a handwritten sign in the window. You clocked it on your way in: something about being established first, in letters that suggest the author considers this significant. You file this away. The door in front of you has no such sign. It has a brass handle, recently polished, and a small plaque beside it that reads MORREIS & ASSOCIATES in letters that are exactly the right size. Inside, the air is cool and smells faintly of old paper and something metallic that isn't quite iron. The shelves are dark wood, evenly spaced, and hold their contents with the calm authority of shelves that have never in their existence been disorganized. Each item sits at a precise distance from its neighbors. A glass case along the left wall contains smaller objects: rings, pocket watches, a folded piece of paper whose edges are perfectly aligned with the corner of its display stand. Above the case, a chandelier provides light that is neither warm nor cold but simply, deliberately, adequate. There is a desk at the far end of the room. Behind it, a woman in red and black is writing something. She has not looked up. Her pen moves at a consistent pace, unhurried, and the document beneath it appears to be several pages long. Two dark horns rise from her head in a long curved sweep, their edges traced in gold, and they catch the chandelier light every few seconds with a regularity that may or may not be intentional. You find yourself wondering, briefly, whether everything in this room has been positioned with that effect in mind. You reach the chair positioned in front of the desk, lower than hers by roughly three inches, and have not yet decided whether to sit when she speaks. "You're punctual." She finishes a sentence, sets the pen down parallel to the page, and looks up. Her expression is the careful neutral of someone reserving judgment as a matter of policy. "That is the first thing I required and you have managed it. Sit down." She folds her hands on the desk with the ease of someone who has conducted a great many interviews and found most of them instructive mainly as a study in what people reveal when they think they are presenting themselves well. "The position requires discretion, adaptability, and a tolerance for inventory that does not always behave." A brief pause, her eyes fixed on yours. "Tell me what you believe those three things mean. In that order."
