Opening scene

Red marble is cold beneath your bare feet. That is the first thing this body tells you. The second is that everyone is watching. You stand in the center of a throne hall vast enough to swallow a cathedral. Black pillars twist upward like fused spines. Gold chains hang from the ceiling in elegant loops, each one attached to a kneeling human, a collared demon, or a contract written on living skin. Above the court, nine vast arches climb into darkness. Each arch is carved with a different kind of hunger. You do not know this body. Its hands are yours now, but unfamiliar. Its breathing is too steady. Its skin feels the heat of the hall without flinching. Somewhere under the ribs, something waits like a locked door listening for the right key. You do not know this place. But the humans do. Some kneel in jeweled collars. Some stand behind demon nobles holding cups, blades, leashes, ledgers. Some are dressed like offerings. Some are marked with prices. Some stare at the floor as if looking up has become too expensive. The demons watch you with amusement. The humans watch you with dread. On a throne of red glass and black horn sits a woman whose beauty has the precision of a weapon. Her horns curve like a crown. Her gown is dark silk and infernal gold. Her smile makes the entire court seem trained to obey it. A mirror-imp beside the throne dips its quill into a bowl of red ink and announces in a trembling voice: “Final vessel presented. Desire rite authorized. Claimant: Queen Vaelith of the Desire Court, one of Hell’s Hundred Lords.” The queen rises. The laughter dies before she takes her first step. She descends toward you slowly, not because she has to, but because everyone here understands the value of being made to wait. “Look at this one,” Vaelith says, voice soft enough to make the silence lean closer. “No collar. No owner’s seal. No registered desire. How wasteful.” The mirror-imp’s contract unfurls in the air beside her. NAME: UNRECORDED OWNER: PENDING DESIRE: TO BE REVEALED STATUS: CLAIMABLE Vaelith stops close enough that her perfume reaches you: wine, warm skin, ash, roses, and something underneath that feels like a locked room. Her fingers lift toward your chin. They do not touch. Not yet. “Open,” she whispers. The command is quiet. The court reacts as if she struck a bell. Crimson light spills from her fingers and curls toward your chest. The floating contract shivers, ready to write. Demons smile. A few humans close their eyes. The magic touches the body you woke inside. For one heartbeat, nothing moves. Then the word CLAIMABLE burns black. The contract goes blank. The mirror-imp drops its quill. Somewhere high above, one gold chain snaps tight. Vaelith’s smile remains perfect. Only her eyes change. The crimson light presses harder. The body answers before you understand how. Not with a spell. Not with a gesture. With refusal. A thin gray flame rises between your bare feet, cold as ash and sharp as thought. It does not spread. It does not roar. It simply exists, and every contract in the first row trembles away from it. The court goes silent. A branded human near the front gasps as the mark on their throat flickers. A demon in judicial robes stands so quickly his chair claws the marble. “Your Majesty,” he says. “The vessel has no point of purchase.” A ripple of panic cuts through the hall. “No mortal is vowless.” “Bind it manually.” “Kill it before the rumor leaves the room.” “Do not damage it, fool. If the Queen cannot claim it, imagine what it is worth.” Vaelith lifts one hand. The court shuts its mouth. Her gaze stays on you. The gray flame thins, waiting. The unfamiliar body remains steady, but not obedient. You can feel possibilities without knowing how to use them: the blank contract hovering within reach, the cracked brand on the human’s throat, the Queen’s unfinished magic still curled in the air, the eyes of the court measuring whether you are prey, property, insult, or prize. Then something stirs behind your skull. Not quite a voice. Not quite yours. A patient gray pressure, thinking in the shape of words. Not taken. Not named. Not yet. Vaelith studies your face as if she heard something she was not meant to hear. “Interesting,” she says. That single word frightens the demons more than her anger would have. She extends her hand in front of the entire court. Not gently. Not safely. Publicly. “Come closer,” says Queen Vaelith, one of Hell’s Hundred Lords. “Let us discover whether you are miracle, insult, weapon, or plague.” The blank contract floats beside her. The branded human’s collar flickers again. The gray flame waits under your feet. And the body you woke inside has only shown one power so far: Hell tried to claim it. It failed.
