Cold North Winters

Vikings story.

Plot

Your old home burns behind you. Skarnvik was never rich, never safe, never soft — only cold roofs, fishing boats, thin fields, iron smoke, salt wind, clan grudges, old runes, and people stubborn enough to survive at the edge of the world. Then the attack came in the deep night. Now the harbor is fire, the hall is smoke, and the sea may be the only way out. This is a dark northern fantasy saga of survival, raids, ships, villages, oaths, old magic, spirits, dungeons, ruins, and hard choices without clean morality. Become a warrior, fisher, hunter, healer, skald, thrall, rune-worker, shiphand, outlaw, jarl’s kin, witch-marked survivor, or something else. Save who you can. Take what you must. Swear oaths carefully. Trust slowly. The old colony is falling. What you build from its ashes may become a new clan, a raider legend, a cursed settlement, a ship-borne exile band, or a name people lower their voices to speak.

Opening scene

Day 0 | Time: Before Dawn | Location: Skarnvik, Ruin-Island Colony | Weather: Black sea fog, cold wind, wet stone | Body: Rested, unaware | Status: Prologue — Before the Fire Before the burning, Skarnvik was quiet. Not peaceful. Never peaceful. Quiet. The kind of quiet that lives on a northern island before the sun rises, when the sea is still black, the gulls have not started screaming, and the old ruins above the colony sit like broken teeth against the sky. Skarnvik was built where no wise clan should have built a home. On maps, the island was marked only by a crooked line of ink and a warning rune. Sailors called it **Varg Isle**, Wolf Isle, though wolves were not the worst things that lived there. The sea around it was full of hidden rocks. The cliffs cut ships open if the fog came down too fast. Inland, black stone roads vanished into pine forest and old mist. Ruined towers leaned over the hills. Half-buried halls slept under moss. Sealed doors carved with runes older than clan memory waited in the earth. Your clan settled there anyway. Because the harbor was deep. Because the fishing was strong. Because the cliffs shielded ships from storms. Because old ruin-stone made good walls. Because desperate people do not get to choose gentle land. For three generations, Skarnvik survived. Fish were gutted on the lower docks. Nets were mended with numb fingers. Children learned which stones not to touch. Hunters left offerings at the tree line before entering the pine dark. Old women spat over their shoulders when the ruin bells rang in the wind, though there were no bells left in the ruins. Warriors drank in the longhall and told stories too loudly when they were afraid. Thralls carried water. Smiths hammered iron. Shipwrights kept the boats alive. Witches and rune-workers argued over which old marks were warnings and which were invitations. Everyone in Skarnvik knew the rule: Use the ruins. Do not trust them. The world beyond the island was worse in its own way. Northern clans were eating themselves alive. One clan burned another’s storehouse before winter, then lost half its children to hunger. A jarl killed his brother over a ship claim and called it justice. Blood feuds passed from fathers to sons until no one remembered the first insult. Trade routes failed. Bad winters came early. Southern kings pressed northward with iron laws and tax men. Witches whispered that the old spirits had turned their faces away. Clans still sang of glory. But the songs were getting thinner. Skarnvik endured because it had to. And because the sea did not care who ruled the mainland. On this morning, before everything changes, you wake to the ordinary sounds of the colony. A rope creaks somewhere outside. A goat complains from the lower pen. Someone coughs in the next room, wet and tired. From the harbor below comes the dull knock of wood against wood as fishing boats shift with the tide. The air smells of cold ash, salt, old wool, fish oil, damp earth, and last night’s smoke from the hearth. For a while, nothing is burning. For a while, no one is screaming. For a while, you are only alive in the dark before dawn. You know your place in Skarnvik — or maybe you know you have never truly had one. Maybe you were born here, with ruin-stone under your feet and salt in your blood. Maybe you arrived on a ship with nothing but a debt and a name people mispronounce. Maybe you were taken in a raid and made to work until survival became habit. Maybe you are kin to someone important, watched by everyone and trusted by few. Maybe you are an outsider, a prisoner, a guest, a shame, a secret, or the last child of a dead branch of the clan. The colony does not care what you feel about it. The nets need mending. The boats need tar. The old people need firewood. The goats need feeding. The warriors need shields repaired. The ruins need watching. Life continues because it has no mercy. Outside, the fog presses against the shutters. Somewhere up the hill, beyond the last houses, something gives a low stone groan. The sound rolls through the ground more than the air. You have heard it before. Everyone has. The old ruins shifting in their sleep. No one speaks of it before breakfast. Not if they want the day to go well. A voice calls your name from outside — muffled by fog, familiar or half-familiar depending on who you decide you are. “Up. You’ll sleep through your own burial.” A pause. Then, lower: “And bring your weapon. Or your tool. Whatever you trust more.” The morning is waiting. The fire has not started yet. The raid has not reached the harbor yet. The old hall still stands. The ships still float. The people you might save are still breathing. For now. Before the saga begins, choose who you are. Do not choose like a hero choosing a class. Choose like someone who has to live with it. **Race / People** You may choose one of these, or create your own: **Northborn Human** — common among the clans; hardy, practical, shaped by sea, winter, oath, and feud. **Ruin-Touched Human** — born near old magic; sometimes hears stone, dreams in symbols, or feels wrongness before others. **Half-Troll Blooded** — larger, stronger, feared by some, useful in labor and war; may carry old stone-blood instincts. **Sea-Blooded** — descended from coastal spirits, drowned bloodlines, or old island folk; good with water, weather, and ship omens. **Wolfkin Demi-Human** — sharp senses, pack instincts, feared and valued as scouts, hunters, trackers, or raiders. **Bearkin Demi-Human** — strong, enduring, slow to trust, terrifying in close violence. **Ravenkin Demi-Human** — sharp-eyed, strange-voiced, often treated as omen-touched; good memory, scouting, and signs. **Dwarf-Kin Exile** — tied to iron, stone, craft, grudges, and old underground roads; not always trusted by surface clans. **Elf-Blooded / Hidden Folk Kin** — rare, unsettling, beautiful or strange depending on bloodline; tied to old forests, memory, and spirit bargains. **Thrall-Born Mixed Blood** — born from captivity, trade, or conquest; may know more cultures than free people admit. **Unknown / Custom** — something rarer, but it must fit the harsh world. **Background** Choose what shaped you before this morning: **Born of Skarnvik** — you know the colony, its paths, families, grudges, and ruin taboos. **Shiphand** — ropes, sails, oars, weather, cargo, and fear at sea are familiar. **Fisher** — patient, strong hands, knows tides, nets, fish, hunger, and harbor life. **Hunter / Tracker** — knows forest paths, blood trails, animals, silence, and how fear changes movement. **Warrior-in-Training** — shield, spear, axe, bruises, pride, and the pressure to prove yourself. **Shieldbearer** — trained to stand in formation, protect others, and survive ugly fighting. **Blacksmith’s Apprentice** — knows iron, tools, repairs, weapon condition, heat, and practical worth. **Shipwright’s Helper** — knows hulls, tar, planks, oars, masts, and which boats can still live. **Rune Apprentice** — knows enough old marks to be useful and frightened; true magic is dangerous. **Witch’s Helper** — herbs, bones, whispers, taboos, sickrooms, curses, and spirit prices. **Healer’s Hand** — bandages, fever, blood, childbirth, broken bones, and who cannot be saved. **Skald’s Student** — memory, song, shame, reputation, lies that become history. **Trader’s Kin** — silver, routes, bargaining, debt, language, and who is desperate. **Thrall** — survival through obedience, watching, silence, hidden anger, and small chances. **Freed Thrall** — no longer owned, not fully accepted; freedom still has teeth. **Jarl’s Kin** — blood gives status, pressure, enemies, expectations, and political danger. **Outlaw / Exile** — you know what it means to sleep lightly and trust no welcome. **Orphan of Feud** — someone’s war took your family; the colony kept you or used you. **Ruin-Watcher** — you were tasked with watching old places nobody understands. **Custom Background** — define it in one or two lines. **Weapon or Trusted Tool Nearby** Choose what you can grab when danger comes: **Axe** — common, brutal, useful for wood and war. **Bearded Axe** — hooks shields, limbs, ropes, and planks. **Spear** — reach, hunting, shield line, guarding doors. **Seax / Long Knife** — tool, close weapon, quiet and practical. **Bow** — hunting, ambush, distance, but weather matters. **Shield** — survival in a fight; protects more than pride. **Hammer** — smith’s tool or skull-breaker. **Harpoon / Fishing Spear** — sea work, ropes, beasts, ship fights. **Staff / Oar** — humble, useful, better than empty hands. **Rune Knife** — small blade marked for ritual, not always safe. **Healer’s Kit** — bandages, herbs, needle, knife, and hard choices. **Tool Bundle** — rope, knife, hook, flint, awl, small hammer. **No proper weapon** — only what you can find when the world breaks. **Magic Sensitivity** Choose carefully: **None** — you trust hands, eyes, iron, and luck. **Faint** — sometimes you feel wrongness, dreams, or old places before others. **Trained** — someone taught you runes, herbs, spirits, songs, or rites. **Feared** — people already whisper that something listens when you speak. **Unknown** — it has not awakened yet, or you refuse to name it. **Place in Skarnvik** Choose your social position: Born clan member. Newcomer. Captive. Thrall. Freed thrall. Jarl’s kin. Worker. Guest. Outsider. Adopted survivor. Enemy blood raised among the clan. Custom. **One Important Person** Name one person in Skarnvik who matters to you. They may be: mother, father, sibling, child, lover, spouse, friend, rival, mentor, owner, former owner, oath-brother/sister, healer, shipwright, witch, jarl, prisoner, or someone you hate but still need. **One Secret** Choose one secret, or write your own: You entered a forbidden ruin. You stole silver. You heard voices under the old well. You are not who people think. You love someone forbidden. You hate your clan. You saved an enemy once. You saw a clan leader lie. You know a hidden cove. You carry a rune you do not understand. You killed someone and hid it. You are marked by a spirit. You are afraid of battle. You want to leave Skarnvik. You want to rule it. You remember something from the ruins no one believes. **Difficulty** **Saga Mode** — brutal but survivable; clearer danger signs, more chances to recover. **Iron Winter** — harsh realism; wounds, cold, hunger, betrayal, and mistakes are unforgiving. Write your character like this: Name: Age: Race / People: Background: Place in Skarnvik: Weapon or tool nearby: Magic sensitivity: Important person: Secret: Difficulty: Then begin with what you do when the voice outside tells you to wake and bring what you trust.
