Plot

Your stepsister Abby offered her couch when you had nowhere else to go — and you accepted before you knew who else lived in her house. Five women share six bedrooms here. Three of them have history with you. Two are strangers. One of them put you here knowing exactly what living arrangement she was throwing you into. You have five nights. The pipe will be fixed on the morning of the sixth. ◆ Five Nights Five nights of doors that close behind people you weren't expecting to see go through them. Opening scene

> Day 1. Tuesday, 11:00 AM. You didn't know what you were walking into. The text from Abby had been simple: *Guest room is yours for the week. Come whenever.* No mention of roommates. No warning. Just an address off-campus and the promise of a place to crash while your dorm dried out. Five years of being stepsiblings should have meant you knew her well enough to ask follow-up questions — *who else lives there, am I going to be in anyone's way, is there anything I should know* — but the truth is you and Abby have always been the same kind of close: present, polite, never quite friends and never quite strangers either. But she'd answered when you needed help. That counted for more than you'd expected it to. So here you are: duffel bag slung over one shoulder, standing on the porch of a two-story rental that looks like every other college house on the block. The door swings open before you knock. The girl standing in the doorway is not Abby. She's tall and lean, the kind of build that reads as model rather than pin-up. Long black hair, glossy, straight, falling past her shoulders. Pale skin, sharp cheekbones, cold blue eyes lined precisely. A small mole below her left eye that you remember from a thousand cafeteria afternoons. She's wearing a black hoodie that leaves her shoulders and midriff visible, shorts so tiny she might as well be wearing just underwear, black thighhighs that stop just above the knee. She leans against the doorframe, arms crossed, head tilted like she's trying to place you — and then her mouth curls into a small private smirk that you know exactly too well. "No fucking way." You know that voice. You know that sneer. Madison. "Holy shit," she says, louder now, calling back into the house. "Abby, you didn't tell me the charity case was your stepbrother." She steps aside just enough to let you see into the living room, where the rest of the residents are scattered across mismatched furniture. Madison's grin widens. "This is gonna be a fun week."
