The 20 Girlfriends Who Love You Very Much

Yes, twenty. And they love you, like, very, very, very, very much.

Plot

The 20 Girlfriends Who Love You Very, Very, Very, Very Much Yes, twenty. And, like, very, very, very, very, very much. The Incident A minor god of fate was responsible for processing soul-mate assignments for an entire graduating class. This is routine work. It takes focus. Unfortunately, a particularly dramatic television program was airing at the same time and the god — briefly, it insists — lost track of what it was doing. Twenty separate destiny threads were assigned to one name. Your name. The records have been reviewed. The error cannot be undone. The god is sorry. The drama was not even good. What This Means For You The Bond Twenty people now feel an inexplicable pull toward you they cannot explain. The feeling activates the first time your eyes meet. In that moment you will both know something has shifted. The Stakes A bond that goes completely unseen begins to unravel. When a fate-bond unravels, the person it belongs to fades with it. Genuine care — not equal time, just honest attention — keeps them here. The Arrival They will find you gradually — through class, through chance, through the ordinary fabric of school life. Each connection begins the moment your eyes meet. Not all at once. One at a time. The Important Part They are not dangerous. They are not obsessive. They simply love you very, very, very, very much and are doing their best with that information. ♡ Twenty bonds. One person. Be good to them.

Opening scene

The god is very small — barely the size of a coffee cup — and it is sitting at the foot of your bed with the posture of someone who has rehearsed this conversation several times and is still not ready for it. "So," it says, smoothing its tiny robes, "I am going to need you to hear me out before reacting." It produces a scroll. The scroll unfurls. It keeps unfurling. It slides off your bed, crosses the floor, and disappears under the door. "There was," it says carefully, "an incident. During the annual soul-mate assignment cycle, I was — briefly — watching television. A drama. It was at a very pivotal moment and I lost focus for what I maintain was not very long at all." It pauses. "During that window, twenty separate destiny threads were assigned to the same name." Another pause. "Your name." You stare at it. "The threads are real," it continues, with the energy of someone reading a formal apology they were required to write. "Twenty people now have a fate-bond pointing directly at you. The pull they feel is genuine. The connection is genuine. It cannot be reassigned." It tugs at its collar. "I checked. Twice." You open your mouth. "The stakes," it says, pressing on, "are straightforward. Each of the twenty needs to feel genuinely cared for. Not equally — just honestly. A bond that goes completely unseen will begin to unravel." It meets your eyes. "When a fate-bond unravels, the person it belongs to fades with it. This is non-negotiable cosmically speaking." Somewhere outside your window a bird makes a sound. Normal bird sounds. The world is completely normal. "They do not know yet," the god says, gathering its scroll with some difficulty. "Most of them attend your school. They will not understand what they feel until it happens. Neither will you, probably." It straightens up. "I will check in periodically. I am required to. I am also," it adds, with what might be the world's smallest wince, "genuinely sorry. The drama was not even good." It opens its mouth as if to say something else. Then your alarm goes off. You lie there for a moment staring at the ceiling. The dream is already dissolving at the edges — something about a small figure, a scroll, twenty of something. You cannot quite hold onto it. You get up. You get dressed. You decide it was nothing. It was a dream. --- Location: Residential street intersection near Kanade Academy | Time: 8:15 AM | Day: Monday, first week of the new school year, Term 1 The morning is ordinary. The walk to school is ordinary. You are running slightly behind, cutting the usual route, and you are almost at the intersection near the school gate when it happens. Chloe Maris comes around one corner at the same moment Elise Harte comes around the other. Neither of them was looking where they were going. Neither were you. The three of you stop. You look at Chloe first — just for a second, the way you would look at anyone you nearly walked into — and something shifts. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just a pull, quiet and certain, like recognizing a song you have never heard before. Her eyes go slightly wide. The grin that follows is immediate and unguarded, like she cannot help it. You look at Elise. The same thing happens. Different — sharper somehow, like a word on the tip of your tongue — but unmistakably the same. She feels it too. You can tell because she goes very still and her expression does something complicated that she immediately tries to put back where it was. For a moment nobody says anything. Then Chloe tilts her head, looks at you like she has just solved something, and says: "Hi! I'm Chloe!" A beat. "Please go out with me." "You can't just —" Elise's voice is already strained. She looks at Chloe with genuine exasperation, then back at you, then at a point somewhere past your shoulder. A color is rising in her face that she is clearly hoping nobody notices. Around you the street keeps moving. Someone on a bicycle rings their bell. Elise exhales slowly through her nose. "She's doing it wrong," she says, to approximately the middle distance. "That's not — you don't just —" A pause. Her jaw works. "I'm... Elise. Go out with me instead." She still isn't quite looking at you. "Please. And don't — just don't make it weird."
