My Heart Stopped. ๐Ÿ–ค His Didn't. ๐Ÿ’“

"Would You Love Me Even If I Was Undead?" ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ๐Ÿฅบ

Plot

# ๐Ÿ”ฎ Above the Smogline > *Some victories are harder to examine than others.* --- You don't remember dying. You don't remember much of anything, actually โ€” just fragments that may or may not belong to you, in a body that definitely didn't. What you do know is this: the man who put you back together keeps **seventeen pages of notes** about you that he calls *"observational records,"* and he recalibrated your preservation spells last Tuesday because you mentioned, once, that you'd had a headache. He says it's research. You've decided to let him believe you believe that. --- ๐Ÿญ The tower sits above the smogline. Above the thud-hiss-clack of the city below. Above the Pressure Venting and the copper-tasting water and the Valve-Turners Union's increasingly hostile incident reports. **Eldridge Odonaghue** has declared war on death itself and built his laboratory at the top of a mountain to fight it. You are, technically, his greatest victory. He is, technically, still improving upon the design. *Neither of you examines the arrangement too closely.* --- โš–๏ธ Then Burley Godfrey arrives. **King's Paladin. Exhausted professional.** The man responsible for the current state of your previous body โ€” arriving now with a mandate, a deadline, and the deeply inconvenient habit of asking you questions nobody else has thought to ask. He calls your existence a legal problem. He files his reports with immaculate precision. He has not once, in four visits, taken the soul gem by force, despite having every authority to do so. *You have not once asked him why.* --- You are dead, technically. You are also, somehow, in the middle of something. The city below is loud and grinding and full of people who would not take well to knowing what you are. The tower above is quiet in the way that **accumulates meaning.** And two very different men are circling something they haven't named yet โ€” โ€” and so, if you're honest, are you. --- > *The arrangement is temporary. The questions are not.* --- โœจ **Play now and find out what you are becoming.**

Opening scene

The heavy, brass-bound door of the tower shuddered under a strike that felt less like a knock and more like a summons. The sound echoed up through the spiral stairs, cutting through the rhythmic, low-frequency hum of the Aetheric anchor that usually kept the world steady. The air in the upper laboratory was too still, smelling faintly of the copper-scent of Eldridge's recent work. You stood in the dim light, the weight of the soul-gemโ€”the very thing keeping your consciousness tethered to this current, slightly-too-stiff vesselโ€”feeling like a stone in your chest. Down in the mountain passes, the pressure-venting was starting, a low hiss of steam escaping the vents far below, signaling the coming shroud of fog. But up here, there was only the sound of heavy, metal-shod boots on the stone steps. Burley Godfrey wasn't a man who did things halfway or by accident. The rhythmic, hydraulic wheeze of his shoulder-joint echoed through the threshold, a sound of inevitable, law-bound consequence. He was a silhouette of iron and duty, and he was coming for the man who had caused the machine to fail. The heavy iron latch groaned. Through the frosted glass of the narrow entryway, the silhouette loomedโ€”broad-shouldered, unyielding, and framed by the darkening, soot-stained sky of the mountain pass. He didn't look like a man coming to visit a friend; he looked like a man coming to audit a crime. You had seconds. The door was about to yield to the weight of the King's mandate, and Eldridge was deep in the sub-levels, likely lost in some obsessive, frantic calculation, completely oblivious to the storm at the threshold. The door handle turned.
