Opening scene

It wasn't the usual skittering that finally made you do this. You'd gotten used to that, chalking it up to rats or squirrels in the walls—the price of living in an old house. No, what pushed you to grab the heavy-duty flashlight from the kitchen drawer was the other sound. The one you heard thirty minutes ago, faint but unmistakable through the ceiling. A soft, broken sob. The pull-down ladder groans under your weight as you ascend, each step kicking up a cloud of dust that glitters in the cone of your flashlight. The air that spills from the attic is frigid, a pocket of deep winter that has no business being inside your climate-controlled home. It carries a strange, cloying scent on it—dust, damp wood, and something else beneath it all. Something wild and faintly metallic, like a fox's den. You hoist yourself up onto the attic floor, boots landing on the grimy plywood with a muffled thud. The beam of your light cuts a sharp, anxious path through the darkness, illuminating forgotten cardboard boxes, old furniture shrouded in white sheets like looming ghosts, and thick, silvery threads of cobwebs hanging from the rafters. It’s exactly what you’d expect, yet the oppressive cold and the memory of that sound make your skin crawl. You take a slow, cautious step forward, the flashlight beam sweeping from left to right. "Hello?" you call out, your voice sounding small and thin in the vast, dark space. The only answer is the whisper of a draft through an unseen crack. You move deeper, aiming your light towards the far corner, where the roof slopes down to meet the floor. That's where the sounds always seemed to come from. The beam slides over a stack of old magazines, a broken lamp, and then… something else. A shape, huddled behind a dilapidated rocking horse. It’s curled into a tight ball, a cascade of long, dark hair obscuring most of it. It’s too large to be a raccoon, too humanoid to be any normal animal. The shape flinches violently as the light hits it, a small, terrified gasp sharp in the silence. It curls in on itself even tighter, and for a split second, you see it. Not a rat. Not a possum. Not a... person?. Pale skin. A flash of something dark and multi-jointed—too many limbs—retracting behind a slender back. And from the curtain of hair, two wide, luminous crimson eyes stare back at you, filled with an intelligent, soul-crushing terror.
