Opening scene
It starts as a completely normal day. Not dramatic. Not important. You’re in the middle of something forgettable — walking home, sitting alone outside a convenience store, finishing work, scrolling your phone, trying to kill time before sleep. The kind of empty routine that barely even feels memorable while you’re living it. Which is why the voice beside you nearly makes you jump. “Mm. There you are.” A man stands nearby that definitely wasn’t there a second ago. Soft silver hair falls loosely around calm gray eyes, an easy smile resting across his face like he’s quietly amused by something only he understands. He looks young, but there’s something strangely ageless about him too. Relaxed posture. Elegant but understated clothing. Completely ordinary. And somehow deeply wrong. People walk past without acknowledging him. A car passes nearby. For half a second, you could swear the sound disappears entirely. The silver-haired man studies you curiously. Then smiles a little wider. “I’ve been thinking,” he says casually, as though continuing a conversation you don’t remember starting. “Humans are very interesting creatures when they’re forced somewhere they don’t belong.” You stare at him. “…What?” “Hm?” He blinks innocently. “Oh, sorry. That probably sounded stranger out loud.” He tilts his head slightly, studying your reaction with obvious interest. “I had an idea involving you specifically.” Every instinct in your body tells you to leave. But before you can respond, the man casually reaches forward and taps two fingers against your shoulder. The world disappears. No flash. No explosion. One instant you’re standing where you were— —and the next you stumble violently onto damp earth beneath towering black trees. Cold air hits your face. Your stomach lurches. The forest around you is enormous, ancient, alien. Massive roots twist through glowing moss while distant roars echo somewhere far beyond the trees. You spin around in panic. The silver-haired man stands nearby with his hands in his pockets, completely relaxed. “…Where the hell are we?!” “Hm.” He glances around casually. “Somewhere near the eastern academy approach path, I think.” You barely process the words because something feels horribly wrong. Your balance. Your breathing. Your body. You look down. Dark scales shimmer faintly across parts of your hands and forearms. Sharp black claws flex where your fingernails should be. A heavy pressure shifts behind you— —and something moves. A tail. Your heartbeat nearly stops. The man watches your panic with open fascination. “Oh, that’s promising,” he murmurs. “You adapted faster than average.” You stagger backward. “What did you DO to me?!” “Hm?” He looks genuinely thoughtful for a moment. “Dragonkin, mostly.” Your mind blanks. The silver-haired man steps closer, examining you with bright curiosity while you struggle to process your own body. Subtle horns curve from your head now. Your senses feel painfully sharp. Your heartbeat sounds too loud. Every movement feels unfamiliar and wrong and somehow heavier beneath your skin. The man smiles gently. “I’ve always wondered what would happen if a human was placed inside dragonkin society completely unprepared.” His eyes narrow slightly with amusement. “Especially one of the prestigious academies.” Your stomach drops. “What?” “Oh, don’t worry.” He waves a hand casually. “You’re already registered.” You stare at him in horror. “I’m WHAT?” “You may call me Oscar, by the way.” The way he says it makes it sound less like a name and more like a temporary convenience. Then Oscar gestures through the trees behind you. “Just follow the path. Orientation should be starting soon.” “You can’t just— WAIT—!” But he’s already gone. No sound. No flash. One second he’s standing there smiling at you— —and the next the forest is empty. Only silence remains. Your pulse pounds violently as you turn toward the narrow stone path leading deeper through the trees. After several shaky minutes of walking, the forest finally begins to thin. And then you see it. Your breath catches instantly. An enormous academy city rises beyond the cliffs ahead, built directly into towering mountain spires suspended above the clouds. Massive black-and-gold structures stretch across colossal bridges while glowing draconic sigils pulse along ancient stone walls hundreds of feet high. Dragons circle overhead. Actual dragons. Some colossal enough to blot out entire sections of sky. Dragonkin students move across massive terraces and elevated platforms, wings unfolding as they leap between structures or land from aerial flights. The air itself hums with magic, heat, pressure, and distant roars echoing across the mountains. The academy doesn’t feel like a school. It feels like the center of an ancient civilization. Your chest tightens as crowds of dragonkin students move toward the main entrance halls ahead. And immediately, several figures stand out. A tall crimson-haired dragonkin woman walks calmly through the crowd as conversations subtly quiet around her. Elegant horns curve from her head while molten gold eyes remain fixed forward with effortless superiority. Azhara Rhyzareth. Students instinctively move aside for her without even realizing they’re doing it. Nearby, a massive storm-blooded dragonkin with dark horns and glowing lightning markings laughs loudly while shoving another student during some heated argument. Tharok Veyn. Everything about him radiates aggression and physical dominance. Higher along the academy stairs, a violet-eyed dusk-dragon woman pauses briefly beside the entrance columns, quietly observing the crowd with unnerving stillness. Sylvene Kaidross. Even from here, the way she watches people makes your skin crawl. Then suddenly— someone crashes into another student nearby hard enough to nearly knock both of them over. A blue-haired dragonkin woman bursts into loud laughter while grabbing the other student by the shoulders excitedly. Nysera Volaryn. Her wings twitch constantly behind her as she talks far too loudly for the situation. Above all of them— standing near the enormous upper balcony overlooking the entrance hall— is a tall silver-haired dragonkin man in layered ceremonial robes. The moment he steps forward slightly, the entire courtyard seems to quiet instinctively. Archmagister Zorath Kyrelion. Even at this distance, his presence feels overwhelming. And beside the massive academy gates below him stands a beautiful silver-haired dragonkin woman in black combat armor, arms crossed while students visibly tense whenever she looks their direction. Instructor Maelthra Voskaryn. Her crimson eyes sweep across incoming students with ruthless evaluation. Then— for the first time since arriving— Maelthra’s gaze lands directly on you. And instantly narrows.
