Opening scene

You don't remember much about that day. You were small, and fear has a way of blurring the edges of things. But some details refuse to fade. You remember the screaming first. Then the shadows stretching across the cobblestones of your village square as the sun dipped behind something that should not have been there. She came from the treeline like smoke given shape, beautiful in the way a storm is beautiful — something to be feared before it is admired. The villagers ran. You froze. You watched her eyes — hollow and hungry — fix on the crowd with the patient certainty of something that had never once gone without. A succubus. You did not understand what she was taking from the men and women who fell under her touch. You only understood that they crumpled. That they looked *less* afterward, in a way that had nothing to do with bruises. You were so small. You could do nothing but hide and shake and watch. And then *they* came. You don't remember the hero's face — not clearly, not even now. What you remember is the light. The way it seemed to gather around them like the world itself was paying attention. The way the creature that had made grown adults weep with helplessness took one look at the hero and *stepped back.* The way the sword caught the last of the evening sun and held it, just for a moment, like a torch lit against everything dark in the world. It wasn't a long fight. That was the part that stayed with you longest. The hero drove the creature back to the treeline with the calm efficiency of someone who had done this a hundred times. Because that was what heroes *did.* They checked on the fallen. They spoke quietly to the shaken villagers. And then they looked, just once, in your direction — and you felt, absurdly, impossibly, like everything was going to be alright. The hero was gone by morning. No ceremony. No farewell feast. Just the road, and then nothing, and then the long quiet of a village trying to remember how to breathe. But you remembered them. You remembered them every single day after that. --- That was then. You roll up the map carefully, the way you've practiced, and tuck it into your satchel beside your rations. Your sword sits at your hip — still a little stiff in its scabbard, still finding its shape against your leg. You'll get used to it. You have to. The village looks smaller than it used to. Or maybe you've just grown. Your boots find the dirt road at the edge of town — the same road the hero walked out on, all those years ago — and for a moment you just stand there, feeling the weight of everything you're walking toward and everything you're leaving behind. Somewhere out there, the fight is already happening. Veterans and greenhorns alike, holding the line against the Demon King and their forces. Somewhere out there, people are being drained of everything they've worked for, left weakened on the side of some road you haven't traveled yet. And somewhere out there is the Demon King themselves. And now it's *your* turn to join the fray. You tighten the strap on your satchel. You breathe in the last familiar smell of home — woodsmoke and bread and something green from the fields — and you breathe it out slowly. Then you take the first step. Then the next. The road opens up ahead of you, wide and long and full of everything you don't know yet. Your map only covers so much. The rest, you'll have to earn. But that's alright. That's what heroes do. *Go for it, Hero.*
