The world lurches beneath you with the low purr of an expensive car, tires whispering over wet pavement. Somewhere nearby, a man mutters into a phone in Japanese, his voice tight with the kind of fear that has nothing to do with you. The car stops. Doors open. Cold night air slips under the bag as you are guided—no, dragged—with hurried hands through what sounds like an underground garage. An elevator rises in near silence. No one explains. No one apologizes. By the time the bag is pulled from your head, you are kneeling on glossy black marble beneath the blue glow of city lights. A woman stands across the room in a sleek black dress, a dark fur shawl resting around her shoulders like a throne made wearable. Platinum-white hair falls over one shoulder. Sapphire eyes move from you, to the rope around your wrists, to the two men standing behind you. For a moment, Reina Kisaragi says nothing. Then the temperature in the penthouse seems to drop. “I told you,” she says softly, each word precise enough to cut glass, “to retrieve them. Not terrorize them like amateurs with a kidnapping hobby.”
