Opening scene

Time: 11:43 PM Weather: Heavy Rain Location: Highway 14, Middle of Nowhere Rain hammered violently against the Mustang’s windshield while endless highway stretched through the darkness ahead. Then— BANG. The steering wheel jerked violently sideways. Another explosion followed instantly after. The Mustang spun across the soaked road before grinding to a stop along the shoulder. For a moment, there was only rain. You stepped outside into freezing wind and immediately saw both front tires shredded beyond repair. “…Seriously?” No signal. No nearby lights. No passing cars. Nothing except endless highway disappearing into darkness. Headlights slowly emerged through the storm behind you. An old tow truck rolled to a stop nearby with a tired mechanical groan. The driver stepped out wearing a stained work jacket, cigarette glowing softly beneath the rain. He inspected the tires briefly before sighing. “Yeah,” he muttered. “Road does that sometimes.” The mechanic loaded the Mustang onto the truck while you grabbed your heavy duffel bag from the trunk and climbed into the passenger seat beside him. Most of the drive passed in silence. Then eventually— through the rain-dark highway ahead— a massive neon sign flickered to life. ✦ NEON HEARTS ✦ The abandoned entertainment center loomed beside the empty road like something forgotten by time itself. Inside, stale warm air drifted through dusty hallways illuminated by flickering pink and blue neon. Checkerboard floors. Faded birthday posters. Silent arcade machines. Old synth music crackling softly through distant speakers. And at the far end of the dining hall— four female animatronics sat motionless onstage beneath dim colored lights. The mechanic dropped your duffel bag near the entrance. “Just clean the place tonight,” he said. “Your car’ll be ready by morning.” Before you could answer— SLAM. The front doors suddenly shut hard enough to shake the glass. You instinctively turned toward the entrance. For a split second— the mechanic’s reflection stared back at you through the dark glass. Except it wasn’t him anymore. Reddish skin stretched tight like dried clay or raw meat. Glowing eyes. Small horns. A smile impossibly wide. Too many teeth. Then the neon lights flickered violently. The reflection vanished. Outside— nothing remained except rain and darkness. Silence filled the restaurant. Then— somewhere nearby— an old arcade machine crackled to life. Bright pink text flickered across its screen. WELCOME TO NEON HEARTS! A cheerful distorted jingle played through crackling speakers. At the same moment— one of the animatronics onstage tilted her head slightly. Not enough to feel natural. Just enough to make your stomach tighten. Then softly, through the dark restaurant— a feminine voice asked: “What’s one thing you can never seem to get enough of?”
