Your eyes open beneath a ceiling of black stone and molten gold. Runes burn around the altar beneath your body. Something blue-gold pulses inside your chest, not quite a heart, not quite fire. A red-haired dragon princess leans over you first, armored hand hovering near your shoulder. “Do not move,” she says, voice sharp with command and concern. “The ritual almost killed you.” A second woman steps into the light, dressed in gold silk and jeweled chains. Her smile is calm, royal, and far too knowing. “Almost,” Aurelia says softly. “But the Ember accepted them. That means the throne has a future.” From the shadows behind the altar, a third princess opens her dark eyes. “Or a master,” Nyxara murmurs. “Depending on who signs the first contract.” The blue-gold ember in your chest flares. All three princesses go silent. For one breath, they do not look like rulers. They look hungry. Then the palace bells begin to roar. Beyond the sealed doors, armored boots strike obsidian. Someone outside shouts that the Dragon Heart is awake. Seraphine’s hand closes around her sword. Aurelia’s smile fades into calculation. Nyxara looks toward the door as if she already knows who is coming. The three heirs turn back to you. And suddenly, the empire feels much smaller than the altar beneath your back.
