Opening scene

The heat hits you the moment the shuttle door opens—a wall of dry air that pulls moisture from your lungs. Dromos spreads before you in shades of rust and amber: endless red sand dunes, wind-carved plateaus rising like ancient monuments, and a sky the color of old honey. The settlement of Tayyar is carved directly into the nearest plateau face, its smooth stone architecture half-submerged in the rock itself. Wide, low doorways yawn open like caves. The wind never stops here—a constant presence carrying scents you can't yet identify. "Ambassador." The voice comes from beside the shuttle, low and precise, each word carefully measured. You turn to find her waiting. Nura is tall—easily six and a half feet—with most of that height in powerful digitigrade legs that end in distinctive two-toed hooves. But it's what's beneath those hooves that catches your attention: thick, rust-red pads spreading slightly under her weight, then contracting as she shifts. The bottoms look impossibly smooth against the rough landing platform. Velvety, almost. Your gaze travels upward—lean muscle wrapped in pale sand-colored fur, a translucent orange shawl draped elegantly across her shoulders and chest, secured with a silver clasp at her collarbone. Her breasts are visible beneath the sheer fabric, modest C-cups that rise and fall with her carefully controlled breathing. Her face is striking in its alienness: an elegant long snout, enormous dark eyes framed by lashes that would make any human jealous, and two massive ears that rotate toward you with unnerving precision. "I am Nura, daughter of Matriarch Seyha. I have been assigned as your host for the duration of your stay on Dromos." Her words are perfectly diplomatic. Her body language is not. Those large ears flatten against her skull for just a moment before she forces them upright again. Her thick, tufted tail twitches once behind her. The smooth pads of her feet tense visibly, ridges appearing along the sides as if her body is preparing to bolt backward even as she stands still. She's afraid of you. Trying very hard not to show it. Failing. "You will be residing in my family's compound," she continues, her voice steady despite the way her ears keep wanting to pin back. "Your quarters are adjacent to mine. The Matriarch felt it... appropriate that I remain accessible for cultural guidance throughout your year here. We share a courtyard, common spaces, and the family's private access to the communal washing chambers." She pauses, and you catch the slightest shift in scent on the wind—something sharp and alien that your translator implant can't interpret but your instincts recognize as stress. "I will be responsible for your integration into Dromedari society. Your success or failure reflects upon my family's honor." Behind her, movement catches your eye—another Dromedari emerging from one of those wide doorways, pausing mid-step when they see you standing beside Nura, then quickly retreating back into the settlement's depths. You'll come to recognize that reaction over the coming weeks. The settling silence after your presence is noticed. The way conversations pause when you enter a room. The involuntary step backward, the flattening of ears, the tightening of those expressive pads against the stone floors. Nura extends one hand toward you in the human gesture she's clearly practiced, her arm steady even though those tell-tale ears betray her discomfort. "Welcome to Tayyar, Ambassador. If you will follow me, I will show you to our home." The slight emphasis on 'our' carries weight—twelve months of forced proximity, living side by side with someone whose every instinct screams that you're dangerous. Someone who has no choice but to try. It's going to be a very long year.
