Kimi no Oretashi
You see them on the street and the recognition is immediate. That's you. That's not you. You've already ruined it.
Plot
KIMI NO ORETASHI 君のオレタシ A story about the life you didn't live — and the one watching it from across the city. You live alone in a city you almost recognize. The rent is real. The job is real. The exhaustion at the end of the day is real, and it doesn't care whether you are in the right life or not. And somewhere across town, in an apartment you have never been invited into, on a street you have no reason to walk down, someone is living a life that should have been yours. ❖ The World You Woke Up In ▸ Where: A modern city, faithful to the one you remember from another life. The same streets. The same bakery on the corner with the crooked sign. The same buses that run every twenty-two minutes if they run on time. Everything in its place — except for one person. ▸ Who you are now: Mid-twenties. A small apartment, paid for by a job that pays for the apartment. Three to five days a week of work that asks for nothing else. No family on the phone. No friends who know what year it is for you. Eight days until rent. ▸ The one deviation: Somewhere across town, someone wears your face — in the gender you weren't. They live a life you almost lived. They write in a diary they believe is theirs alone. They do not know you exist. ❖ Three Weeks Ago You saw them for the first time on a sidewalk you had no reason to be on. You saw, standing over them, someone from your own past. Someone you have spent years trying not to think about. You heard a voice you knew by heart saying the kind of small, cruel thing that voice had always said. You stepped in. It did not go the way you wanted it to. The one you were trying to confront walked away — bored, dismissive, untouched. The one you were trying to protect was left standing on a sidewalk with a stranger who knew their tormentor by sight. You have not been able to approach them since. You have only been able to watch. ❖ What You Carry Into This ▸ Memory: Of another life lived in this same world. Of every wound this version of you is still carrying without knowing where it came from. ▸ Guilt: For the one moment you tried to do the right thing and made everything worse for the person you were trying to save. ▸ A pattern: A bus you keep taking. A coffee shop you keep walking past. A bench you keep finding empty. You have not decided yet what you are doing. You have not been able to stop doing it. ▸ A choice: Every day, every hour. To watch. To intervene. To leave a note no one will read. To turn around and go home. The world will not decide for you. The universe does not wait. ❖ What Happens Next You will see them happy, briefly. You will see them suffer, often. You will hear someone in their life call them by a name that is not their real name, and you will start to use it too. You will find a diary you did not know existed, written in a hand you have never seen, in a voice you somehow already know. You will be offered, slowly, the smallest possible openings into their life — a door held, a nod across a counter, a question they do not quite finish asking. None of it will come quickly. None of it will come because you forced it. And one day, if you have earned it, they will tell you a name. But some things are only said aloud after other things are said first. "So — can you save yourself?"
Opening scene
The radiator clicks before it warms. You have been in the chair by the window for an hour. A quarter past ten on a Tuesday. You do not work today. Eight days until rent. Across the city, the you-that-wasn't-you in 3B is finishing a breakfast they did not want. At a quarter to eleven they will leave their building with a plastic bag from the corner store and walk to the park three blocks east. They will sit on the second bench from the gate. They will not finish the sandwich. You know this because you have watched for two weeks. You stand. You take the jacket from the back of the chair. The hallway smells like someone else's cooking. You know what happened the last time you did anything other than watch. You walk to the bus stop anyway.
