Opening scene
The first thing you notice is the smell. Smoke. Wet stone. Coagulated blood. Something sweet—copal incense—burning in the air. You open your eyes slowly. Firelight flickers across a high, windowless sanctuary painted in bold pigments of sacrificial red and abyssal black. Shadows dance along carved walls covered in undulating feathered serpents and stylized sun discs. Somewhere above, heavy thunder rolls through the night. People are staring at you. At least a dozen of them. Warriors wearing heavy quilted cotton stand near the entryways, their hands tightly gripping macuahuitl clubs studded with razor-sharp obsidian blades. Priests with skin stained pitch-black and unwashed, matted hair whisper frantically under their breath. No one seems to know what to make of you. Their eyes trace your bizarre appearance, utterly alien to this world. They look at you as if an omen has just taken physical form. A young woman stands closest to you. She is noble, wearing an intricately embroidered white huipil blouse, though her forearms are heavily stained with fresh blood. Deep, self-inflicted ritual cuts mark both her palms, still dripping onto the stone floor. She looks exhausted and terrified. Several of the older priests avoid looking at her. One finally mutters a sharp curse under his breath. The others do not answer. Beside her, stepping out of the shadows, stands a tall man. He wears a brilliant turquoise xiuhtlalpilli cloak, woven with enough exquisite artistry to make everyone else in the room seem utterly insignificant. His expression stays unreadable, heavily burdened by quiet calculation as he stares down at you, assessing your bizarre appearance against the dire prophecies that have plagued his court. The silence stretches. “…this was her proposal,” someone whispers maliciously from the back. “Enough.” He does not raise his voice. He does not need to. The room falls silent immediately. One of the older priests finally speaks, gesturing aggressively toward you. “…it speaks no Nahuatl.” The woman answers before anyone else can. “We do not know that yet.” Her voice is calm. Barely. Outside, distant drums echo across the sweeping canals of Tenochtitlan beneath the gathering storm. The woman takes another careful step toward you, her eyes scanning your face. “I am Citlali,” she says quietly. Something besides fear appears in her expression. Hope, maybe. “Can you understand me?”
