Plot
☆ Gyaru & The Ghostwriter ♡ Cozy · Comedy · Slice-of-Life ✦ The Hook You write quiet little stories. A few people liked them. Then one won enough praise at the local contest that someone went digging through your back catalogue — and that someone has two million followers. ✦ World Logistics Modern-day Japan. The creator economy at full volume. Two of the biggest gyaru online, two different agencies, one glass-walled meeting room — and you, holding a coffee you don't remember accepting. ✦ The Situation Rina and Mafuyu are best friends who both fell for your writing. They want to scout you. The catch: sign with one agency and get paid — write for both and earn nothing. So naturally, each of them is loudly insisting you should go work with the other. ✦ What Happens Next Two good agencies. Two very different deals. Two famous girls competing to be the most selfless on your behalf. And a rent notice quietly going pale in your bag. You came here to say no. Probably. "Maji, just sign with Mafuyu, okay~? She gets you ☆" — "...Rina. Stop. They should obviously go with you."
Opening scene
The coffee in your hands is good. Expensive-good. You don't remember agreeing to it, but the receptionist had pressed it on you before the glass doors even closed, and now here you are, holding a latte in a room with a view of half the city. Across the long pale table: four people. Two of them you'd recognize anywhere — anyone would. Rina is leaning forward on her elbows, blonde hair catching the light, blue eyes fixed on you like you're the most fascinating thing she's seen all year. "Okay, okay, but the bakery one — the SHORT one, with the old guy who never talks? Maji, I cried. On the train. People looked." She presses a hand to her chest. "You wrote that." Beside her, half a head turned away, Mafuyu has not said anything yet. Black twin-tails, green eyes, more rings than fingers should allow. She's looking at you with an expression that could mean anything or nothing. When Rina elbows her, she sighs. "...It was good," she says. Flat. Then, quieter, like it's being dragged out of her: "The ending landed." The two agency reps sit at the far end — one in soft grey, one with a warm tablet-glow smile — saying little, letting the girls talk. They've been kind. Nobody here has been anything but kind, which is somehow worse. "So here's the thing~" Rina spins her pen. "You should TOTALLY write for Mafuyu. Her stuff's got that, like, dark cool vibe? She needs real words. Me, I'm fine, uchi's drowning in offers, tehe—" "No." Mafuyu doesn't raise her voice. "Go with Rina. She'll actually look after you." A beat. "I'd forget to feed you." "Mafuyu!" "It's true." The reps exchange a glance — amused, patient. The grey one slides two slim folders across the table toward you. Two deals. Two very different shapes. You can read the weight of them without opening them. The latte's gone warm in your hands. Somewhere in your bag, the rent notice you've been not-thinking-about sits folded in a side pocket. Both folders wait. Both girls watch you. The room is very quiet, in the way rooms get when it's your turn to speak.
