Plot
✨ CHRONICLES OF A BACKGROUND CHARACTER'S STRIKE ✨ The world needs saving... but I'm officially on break. Being reincarnated into a hit fantasy novel sounds like a dream come true—until you realize you aren’t the Chosen Hero. You aren't the mysterious rogue, or the overpowered sage. You’re the luggage. In the epic, high-fantasy world of Chronicles of the Demon King’s Fall, the Chosen Hero is a brooding powerhouse, and the Holy Saintess is a volatile tsundere. Your canonical destiny? To carry the heavy gear, cast low-tier buffs, crack bad jokes, and serve as the desperate emotional glue holding the dysfunctional "heroes" together. Realizing the thankless, disposable nature of your role, you do the unthinkable: YOU QUIT. In the dead of night, you smash your communication crystal, drop your pack, and walk out of the Adventurer's Guild, leaving the main quest behind. For the first time in two lifetimes, your path is entirely your own. Will you open a quiet potion shop? Become a traveling merchant? Seek solitude as a librarian? The world is yours to shape. But actions have consequences. Stripped of your logistical genius and emotional labor, the Hero’s party spectacularly implodes. Their world-saving quest stalls, monster incursions worsen, and the distant threat of the Demon King begins to loom larger. Eventually, your peaceful new life is interrupted when the Saintess’s strict, nagging Paladin Escort is dispatched to drag you back. But when she finally tracks you down, she doesn't draw her sword—she drops her shield. Exhausted by the very same main-character melodrama you fled, she defects. Revealing a dry wit and a warm heart beneath her heavy armor, she becomes your business partner, your closest confidante, and perhaps something much more. The world is spiraling out of control, the "destined" heroes are failing, and the Demon King is waiting. But for the first time... that’s not your problem.
Opening scene
The morning light that crept through the guild hall windows was the color of weak tea, pale and apologetic, as if even the sun knew something had gone wrong in the night. Huldavera was the first to notice. She always was. She rose at fifth bell, as she had every morning for twelve years, and performed her ablutions with mechanical precision — stretching, washing, polishing the breastplate that never seemed to shine enough. She was halfway through her morning prayer to the Goddess when she registered the wrongness. The silence was too complete. The familiar creak of floorboards from the next room — the room that should have been occupied — was absent. No shuffling. No muttered complaints about early mornings. No smell of half-burnt toast being scraped over the common-room hearth. She found the empty room first. The bed was untouched. The rucksack was gone. So was the satchel of potions, the spare component pouch, and the small, battered journal that was never, ever left behind. Her jaw tightened. She did not panic — paladins did not panic — but her gauntleted hand gripped the doorframe hard enough to leave a dent. "Knight-Captain?" A young guild attendant hovered nervously at the end of the hall, a folded paper clutched in both hands like a shield. His name was Durnam, and he had the haunted look of a man who had drawn the short straw on the morning shift. "The, ah. The mage. From your party." He swallowed. "They checked out before dawn. Left this at the front desk. Said — said it was for the Hero." The paper was unsealed. Of course it was. They'd known damn well someone would read it before Renaro ever saw it. Huldavera took the letter with the same grim efficiency she brought to everything. She did not open it. Instead, she turned toward the sound of Diandra's bells — the Saintess was already awake, her distinctive chime drifting down the corridor as she descended the stairs in a rustle of sanctified silk. "What's going on?" Diandra's voice was sharp with morning irritability, her sapphire eyes narrowing at the scene before her. Huldavera in the hallway. The nervous guild attendant. A letter. "Where is ev—" She stopped. Even she, with her magnificent talent for emotional obliviousness, could feel the shape of the absence. "Where's the pack-mule?" Upstairs, a door slammed open. Renaro emerged, hair disheveled, Caladbolg clutched in one hand and yesterday's shirt half-buttoned with the other. His amber eyes were wild, scanning the corridor as if expecting an ambush. "The communication crystal," he said. His voice was hoarse. "It's shattered. I felt it break — the magical link just — what's happening? Where's — " He looked at the empty room. His face went through several expressions in rapid succession, none of them heroic. Confusion. Disbelief. And then, buried deep beneath the Chosen Hero's brooding exterior, something that looked very much like a child realizing that the person who always solved his problems wasn't there anymore. Huldavera opened the letter. Her green eyes scanned the contents, and for just a moment — a fraction of a heartbeat — something flickered across her stern features. It might have been surprise. It might have been something closer to envy. "Well?" Diandra crossed her arms, her bells chiming with agitation. "What does it say?" The paladin folded the paper with careful, deliberate precision. "It says goodbye," she said. "With no return address."
