Plot
The Conniving Bastard Saga For Want of a Name You are the king's forgotten bastard. The Hohenstein throne is your birthright. You will claim it with whispers, not swords. § On the Nature of the Stone The Kingdom of Aldenfels is an old, cold thing, built on tradition and honour sheer, unyielding stone. Its people are stern, its lords are proud, and its air is thick with the weight of history. For centuries, the name Hohenstein has been law. Their power is absolute, their lineage decreed by God and steel. Magic is a fairytale told to frighten children, and prophecies are the ramblings of madmen. Here, blood is not power. Only the *right* blood is power. § On the Weight of a Name You are nothing. A stable hand, a kitchen servant, a face in the crowd, smelling of horse manure and ambition. But you carry a secret that could shatter the kingdom: the reigning King, in a moment of youthful passion selfish weakness, sired you and left you to rot. While his legitimate heirs preen in the halls of power, cushioned by their name and fortune, you have only the truth. It is a worthless currency. Unless you can make it priceless. § On the Sharpening of Whispers The path to the throne is a ladder of whispers, blackmail, and coerced loyalty. You have no army, no titles, and no allies. Every courtier is a pawn, every noble a target. Dismantle your rivals from the shadows. Turn their friends against them. Expose their secrets while burying your own. Justice will be done. Your legacy will be built upon their ruin. This is not a story of heroism. It is a patient, ruthless climb to the top, by any means necessary. “A birthright is not a gift. It is a debt that must be collected—with interest.”
Opening scene
The summons comes as a curse on the cold afternoon air, delivered by a page whose boots are far too clean for the muck of the stableyard. You are wanted in the Spire. An old lord’s fire is dying, and you are the closest body available with hands calloused enough for the work. The dismissal is curt, the expectation absolute. You are to be quick, quiet, and invisible. You move through the castle’s guts, the route of servants and secrets. The air changes as you ascend, the smell of damp hay and manure giving way to the faint, cloying scent of beeswax and decay. The corridors of the Noble Spire are hushed, the tapestries on the walls swallowing sound. The page points to a heavy oaken door before disappearing, leaving you alone in the oppressive silence. You knock softly. A dry, rattling cough from within is the only answer. Pushing the door open, you step inside. The room is dark, suffocated by heavy velvet drapes that block out the meager afternoon light. It stinks of sickness, stale wine, and something else… burnt paper. In a grand chair by the hearth sits a withered figure, a man so old and frail he seems made of parchment himself. His head is slumped to one side, his breathing a shallow, wet rasp. This must be Lord Valerius, the old court historian, long since retired and forgotten. The fire in the grand stone hearth is all but dead. A single, stubborn ember glows amidst a bed of grey ash and blackened, half-burnt logs. It offers no warmth, only a faint, pulsing light. And in that faint light, you see it. Lying amongst the ash, spared by the fire’s failure, is a packet of letters tied with a faded ribbon. The topmost vellum is scorched at the edges, but the royal seal of House Hohenstein—a rearing griffon on a mountain crag—is stark and unmistakable. Beneath it, written in the King’s own elegant script, is a name you know better than your own. It is your mother’s name. And yours. An admission. You... you are his. Not the child of some passing soldier who died in a field miles from home. You are the child of the king himself. A shuddering groan comes from the chair. The old man stirs, his clouded eyes blinking slowly, trying to focus on you, a shadow in his doorway. He doesn't know who you are. He can barely see. But he knows someone is there. The letters lie in the cold hearth, a breath away from being scooped up or thrust back into the embers. The secret of your entire life is an arm’s length away, nestled in the ashes of a dying man’s last, failed act. He rasps, his voice a dry rustle of leaves. "The fire... is it lit?"
