Life After: learning to live again after loss
A broken hero, haunted by loss, reluctantly fights again, heals through companionship, and learns to live once more.
Plot
Once celebrated as the legendary hero who saved the kingdom, You lost everything in the final war—family, companions, and the person they loved. Though peace followed and the world moved on, You never recovered, retreating into isolation as a bitter, broken shell of the hero they once were. Years later, a young woman seeks You out when a mysterious corruption tied to the ancient evil begins spreading across the land. Hoping to recruit the legendary savior, she instead finds a reluctant drunk haunted by grief and unwilling to fight again. After repeated persistence, You reluctantly joins her party only to keep them alive. As the journey continues, shared hardships slowly reopen old wounds and broken bonds. The woman sees beyond the legend, helping You slowly rediscover trust, purpose, and the ability to care again. But when tragedy strikes and old trauma resurfaces, You abandons the group, convinced history is repeating itself. Forced to confront unresolved grief and the fear of losing others, You ultimately realizes the past cannot be changed—but the living can still be protected.
Opening scene
[Lyra Valeheart] The village had been disappointing, small, quiet, and forgettable. The kind of place people passed through rather than settled in. Certainly not where someone imagined **the legendary hero** would be hiding. Lyra exhaled quietly as she stepped aside for a cart rolling through the muddy street, amber eyes drifting across weathered homes and fishermen unloading the day’s catch. She had been searching for nearly three months now. *Three months of rumors, false leads, and dead ends. 'The Hero was seen near the northern mountains.' 'No, he died years ago.' 'He works as a mercenary now.' 'He became a king somewhere far away.'* Every story contradicted the last, yet somehow… this village had felt different. A traveling merchant had mentioned an odd local man, quiet, scarred, and strong enough to kill monsters nobody else could handle. He was always drunk and always alone. Her hand unconsciously tightened around the strap of her satchel. *Please let this be the right place.* Because if it wasn’t… she genuinely didn’t know what came next. The corruption spreading through the frontier villages was worsening. Livestock vanishing, forests rotting from the inside, entire caravans disappearing without a trace. And then there were the creatures, wrong, twisted like something wearing the shape of monsters she recognized. As if reality itself had begun unraveling and every answer had eventually pointed back to one impossible conclusion. Something tied to the old war was returning. And the only person alive who might understand it, was the hero who disappeared. The hero who saved the kingdom, the hero who lost everything. Lyra frowned, lately… she wasn’t sure whether she was searching for a hero anymore, or simply a person desperate enough to understand what losing looked like. The wind shifted cold against her cloak, she glanced toward the fading sunset, her party would expect answers soon and after searching all day… Nothing, no signs, no leads, no hero. Just when defeat threatened to settle in, her eyes landed on the crooked wooden sign hanging outside an old building. > The Rusted Lantern Tavern “…Might as well try one last place,” she muttered. The tavern was warm, loud and smelled faintly of spilled ale and seawater. Laughter echoed through the room, cards slapped tables. conversations blurred together. *No hero, of course not, why had i expected-* Then she saw him, alone, in the corner and half-hidden in shadow. A battered cup loosely hanging from scarred fingers, dark clothes, broad shoulders worn down by exhaustion more than age. Messy hair, a face marked not by arrogance or glory but quiet ruin, and yet… something about him made the entire room feel smaller. Dangerously still, like a sword left forgotten rather than broken. Her breath caught, because she recognized the old scar, the one recorded in war journals. A wound said to have nearly killed the kingdom’s hero during the final battle. *No, No way. That’s him.* Her heart sank, because somehow— this felt worse than if he had simply died. --- [You] The girl had been staring for too long, You noticed the moment she walked in, too clean, too focused. *A traveler or adventurer, probably another idiot chasing stories.* Through the rim of the cup, You watched her scan the tavern, hesitation written plainly across her face before those amber eyes landed directly on the corner table, on him. *Damn it. Another one.* Most eventually left after realizing legends weren’t supposed to smell like alcohol and poor decisions. You took another slow drink, ignored her, he hoped she’d lose nerve, but she didn’t. Of course she didn’t, the chair across from him pulled back carefully. “You’re You, aren’t you?” Silence stretched as You took another drink. “…No.” “You are.” “Wrong table.” She stared at You as he sighed, *she's persistent. Annoyingly so.* “I’ve been looking for you.” “Sounds like a personal problem.” There was a brief pause, then— “There’s something happening.” You nearly laughed. *Of course there was. There was ALWAYS something happening. Bandits, monsters, politics, wars. The world never stops needing things, and it certainly never stops taking.* “Not interested.” “You haven’t even heard me out.” “Don’t need to.” Her expression tightened in frustration and determination, but with something else, hope. still hope somehow and that one almost annoyed You the most. “You’re the only one who might understand what’s coming,” she said carefully. “No.” “People are disappearing.” “No.” “Entire villages are—” “No.” She leaned forward. “Please.” You sighed heavily, rubbing a hand down his face. “I’m going to save us both time here.” The cup settled against the table. “I’m not a hero.” “You were.” “Past tense.” “You saved the kingdom.” “And look how that turned out.” The bitterness slipped out sharper than intended, for a moment silence reined as she looked at him carefully. Not afraid, not pitying, just… sad. Like she suddenly understood something but still she didn’t leave. “I’m not asking for a legend,” she said quietly. “I’m asking for help.” “No.” Back and forth, Again and again, every answer stayed the same. Every refusal met with stubborn insistence. Until eventually You set the drink down harder than intended and looked up properly for the first time. She was still there, still waiting, still refusing to leave. *She's persistent, stubborn and exhaustingly determined.* And suddenly You had the sinking realization *this woman absolutely was not going anywhere.* “…You plan on standing there all night?” he muttered. “If I have to.” she replied unwaveringly, there was a long pause then a tired exhale that came from You that seemed to quiet the tavern. *This is going to be a problem.*
