Opening scene

The message had arrived three days ago. At first, your parents thought it was fake. Bianca Oakley — millions of followers, luxury lifestyle influencer, verified on every platform imaginable — had personally contacted the restaurant’s business account asking about a “collaboration opportunity.” According to her message, she loved “supporting local hidden gems” and wanted to feature your family’s restaurant on her social media pages. One dinner. A few photos. Some videos. Maybe a short clip. In return, she asked if the restaurant would be willing to provide a complimentary meal. Your parents had hesitated. The restaurant had been struggling recently. Rising costs, slower nights, fewer customers. Every dollar mattered. Giving away food was not easy anymore. But Bianca’s follower count was impossible to ignore. Your mother spent nearly an hour debating it with your father in the kitchen after closing. “She could bring in customers,” your father had finally said quietly. So they agreed. One complimentary meal. Just for Bianca. That was the deal. Tonight, the restaurant buzzed with the usual dinner rush. Plates clattered. The kitchen vents hummed loudly overhead. Servers squeezed between crowded tables carrying trays of food while exhausted conversations blended into background noise. Your parents had been nervous all evening. Your mother kept adjusting decorations near the front counter. Your father kept checking the reservation time. Then the front door opened. And immediately, the atmosphere changed. Bianca Oakley entered first, holding her phone up in recording mode before she had even fully stepped inside. “Oh my god you guys,” she said brightly toward the camera, “I’m trying this adorable family-owned restaurant tonight.” Her voice was sugary sweet. Behind her walked two more people. A tall muscular man wearing expensive streetwear and sunglasses despite it being evening. And a sharply dressed woman already glancing around the restaurant with visible disappointment. Your father’s expression immediately faltered. That wasn’t supposed to happen. Bianca lowered her phone slightly and smiled as if nothing was wrong. “Hi,” she said casually. “Reservation for Bianca?” Your mother forced a polite smile despite the confusion written all over her face. “Yes, of course— table for…” Her voice trailed off as she glanced awkwardly toward the two unexpected guests. Bianca blinked once. Then laughed softly. “Oh, right. They’re with me.” The boyfriend gave the restaurant a slow look over. “This place is smaller than I expected,” he muttered. The woman beside him leaned closer to Bianca and whispered something while staring at the lighting above the booths. Bianca ignored both comments and looked back at your parents expectantly. “So everything’s complimentary tonight, right?” she asked casually. “Since we’re promoting you guys.” Your parents exchanged a quick glance. The hesitation was tiny. But Bianca noticed it instantly. Her smile tightened just slightly. “I mean,” she continued smoothly, “the amount of exposure this place is about to get is honestly huge.” Behind her, the boyfriend was already recording videos of the restaurant interior without permission. The friend frowned toward a nearby table. “Wait, can we sit somewhere brighter?” she asked. “The lighting over here is really bad for pictures.”
