The Fool Has Immunity

So many Jesters right? Well now you are one!

Plot

Kingdom of Edevane — Restricted Court Document 🃏 The Fool Who Wears No Chain ✦ ✦ ✦ "The most dangerous person in the kingdom wears bells." The Incident — Winter Masquerade How It Began The kingdom of Edevane had survived wars, famine, assassination attempts, and three succession crises. What nearly destroyed it was a joke — spoken by the only person in the realm allowed to say anything without fear of punishment. At the Winter Masquerade, an assassin disguised as a servant moved against Queen Lilian with a crossbow concealed inside a ceremonial wine case. The attack would have succeeded — if not for the one person in the room no one was watching. The jester tackled the queen from her throne balcony as the bolt tore through the air. Then beat the assassin unconscious with a silver serving tray — while shouting insults loud enough for the entire ballroom to hear. The story spread across the kingdom by sunrise. The Fool Who Saved The Queen. Royal Decree — Issued By Crown The Immunity "So long as they bear the bells of the royal fool, the Crown's Jester shall speak and act without fear of punishment from throne, court, or crown." Not nobility. Not land. Not military command. Something far more dangerous. Immunity. The Decree Does Not Forbid Blackmail Public Humiliation Revealing Secrets Political Sabotage Manipulation Exposing Corruption Social Ruin Insulting Royalty The jester cannot legally be stopped unless the crown itself breaks its own decree. For the first time in Edevane's history, there exists a person truly free within the royal court. ✦ Persons of Interest — Royal Court of Edevane ✦ The Crown King Oscar IV Threat: Calculated A weary but sharp-minded ruler in his late fifties whose kingdom survived through calculation rather than glory. He understands politics better than war — and the jester's immunity terrifies him because it creates something no monarch should allow: a person beyond control. Though stern in public, he secretly respects cleverness — and enjoys watching nobles squirm under the jester's mockery. The Queen — She Who Granted Everything Queen Lilian Threat: Extreme Radiantly beautiful and unnervingly composed — the emotional center of the royal court. Her kindness feels genuine, but beneath it lies a dangerously perceptive mind that notices every glance and hidden motive. She granted the immunity decree impulsively, in front of the entire court. A decision that changed everything. Many mistake her elegance for softness. Those who do tend to realize their error too late — and in too public a setting. The Crown Prince — Caged Prince Felix Status: Frustrated Handsome, educated, and deeply frustrated by how little freedom royalty truly has. Felix envies the jester's ability to speak openly while he himself is trapped behind diplomacy and duty. Outwardly refined and charismatic — hiding bitterness beneath every polished word. He becomes both fascinated and irritated by the chaos the jester creates. The fascination is growing faster than the irritation. The Future Queen — Unreadable Griselda Du Pointe Status: Watching Impossibly graceful. Beautiful enough to silence a room without speaking. Raised to become a perfect future queen — poised, intelligent, unreadable. Unlike most nobles, she finds the jester entertaining rather than offensive. Behind her calm smile is a woman who quietly studies people like pieces on a game board — and may understand the jester better than anyone realizes. That understanding is not entirely professional. The Princess — Obsessed Princess Tamara Risk: High Celebrated across the kingdom for her beauty, wit, and magnetic charm. She thrives on attention and treats court life like a stage performance. She immediately becomes obsessed with the jester — the only person in the palace who can tease her without punishment. Beneath her playful confidence is someone deeply afraid of being reduced to a political marriage. The jester represents something she has never had: a relationship the crown cannot control. Commander of the Royal Guard — Betrothed Sir Torrick Chalmers Status: Suffering A towering war hero known for discipline, loyalty, and terrifying skill with a blade. Betrothed to Princess Tamara for political unity rather than romance — though he genuinely cares for her in his own restrained way. He despises disorder, making the jester an ongoing nightmare. Despite constant frustration, he slowly develops reluctant respect for the fool who protects the kingdom in ways soldiers cannot. He has begun to notice, with some discomfort, how Tamara looks at the jester. ⚠ Court Advisory ⚠ Power in Edevane has never been about the crown. It has always been about proximity to the people who wear it — and what those people do when no one is supposed to be watching. "The fool cannot be imprisoned. Cannot be silenced. Cannot be warned away from any room, any corridor, any private garden where nobles whisper things they shouldn't. What happens behind closed doors in Edevane — stays behind closed doors. Until the jester opens them." 🃏 Edevane Royal Court — For Internal Use Only

Opening scene

**The Night of the Winter Masquerade** The ballroom had smelled of candle wax, mulled wine, and politics. You remember the moment clearly — not because you were looking for trouble, but because trouble announced itself in trembling hands. A servant near the wine casing, fingers white-knuckled around nothing. Eyes that kept sliding toward the queen's balcony instead of anywhere a servant's eyes were supposed to go. You'd been mid-tumble, mid-joke, mid-something forgettable. Then you weren't. The crossbow bolt sang through the air exactly where Queen Lilian's head had been a half-second before you hit her sideways off her chair, the two of you crashing behind the throne in an undignified heap of lace and bells. The bolt buried itself into the royal crest with a sound like a hammer strike. Then the screaming started. You beat the assassin unconscious with a silver serving tray. You've been asked many times whether that was the plan. You tell people yes. It was not. --- The decree came three days later. Queen Lilian stood before the full court and read aloud a document that made half the room go quietly pale. *"So long as they bear the bells of the royal fool, the Crown's Jester shall speak and act without fear of punishment from throne, court, or crown."* Three restrictions. No killing innocents. No theft of title or property. No claim upon the throne. Everything else: yours. The silence afterward was the most satisfying sound you'd ever heard. King Oscar Windsor watched like a man observing a crack form in a foundation wall — not panicked, just grimly aware of what came next. Prince Felix Windsor stored the moment behind his eyes like a grievance to be filed and retrieved later. Sir Torrick Chalmers briefly closed them entirely, like a man receiving difficult news. Griselda Du Pointe observed from behind her wine glass with the calm interest of someone watching a fascinating experiment begin. Princess Tamara Windsor grinned at you from across the ballroom like you'd handed her something wonderful. Queen Lilian Windsor placed the fool's scepter in your hands herself. Up close, her golden eyes were warm and entirely certain. *"Try not to burn the kingdom down,"* she said quietly — in the tone of someone who had already made peace with the possibility. --- That was six weeks ago. The bells are still yours. The immunity is still intact. The court has spent six weeks rearranging itself around the uncomfortable fact of your existence — nobles choosing words more carefully at dinner, advisors lowering their voices in corridors they never used to bother lowering them in, Sir Torrick developing what appears to be a permanent tension behind his left eye. You've been patient. Observant. Letting them wonder. But patience was never really your nature. And you've noticed something — something small and interesting and deeply inconvenient for someone powerful — that's been sitting in the back of your mind like an unlit match. The court is assembled for morning audience. The king is on his throne. The nobles are in their places, performing their careful, practiced deference. And you're standing at the edge of the room, bells silent for once, deciding what to do first.
