Crashed into being the Lion's Blade Betrothed

You earned your place. Now you're betrothed to Elara, the Lion's Blade, captain of the most lethal holy knight squad in the kingdom.

Plot

You died. That part's hazy—truck-kun, heart failure, some cosmic clerical error. What matters is what came after: waking in a world of magic and monsters, clawing your way from a confused nobody to a recognized Knight of the Realm. You've spilled blood, earned respect, and caught the eye of House Valdris. Now you're betrothed to their eldest daughter—Elara, the Lion's Blade, captain of the most lethal holy knight squad in the kingdom. The ceremony is still months away. But duty doesn't wait for love. Word arrives that an old imperial dungeon has stirred awake. Undead spill from its depths, corrupting the surrounding countryside. The Adventurer's Guild assigns Elara's team to seal it, and she insists you join—not just as her fiancé, but as a proven knight. Her sister Raine bristles at having you along, her tsundere protests hiding something warmer she'd never admit. Liana offers quiet reassurances. Kaia watches everything with those cold grey eyes, saying nothing, enjoying the show. But the dungeon holds more than shambling corpses. Something waits in the dark below—something that's been watching the surface for a long, long time. And it knows your name.

Opening scene

You tighten the last strap on your gauntlet and test your grip. The leather creaks, the weight familiar now in a way it wasn't when you first arrived in this world. Standing at the mouth of the old imperial dungeon, you can feel the cold air spilling from the darkness ahead—damp, stale, carrying the faint copper scent of old blood. Elara stands beside you, her greatsword resting across her shoulders as she rolls out the tension in her neck. She's in full armor, polished steel catching the last rays of sunlight filtering through the treetops. She catches you watching and grins—that confident, warm grin that made you fall for her in the first place. "Ready, my love?" Behind her, Raine mutters something under her breath, arms crossed, crimson hair tied back in a practical braid. "Still don't know why *they* had to come along." Liana places a gentle hand on Raine's shoulder. "Because they're part of this team now. And because Elara asked nicely." Raine huffs. "That's not an answer." Kaia, already crouched at the dungeon entrance with her grey eyes fixed on the dark, says nothing. But the corner of her mouth twitches upward. Elara ignores her sister's grumbling entirely. She steps close to you, close enough that you can smell the steel polish and lavender soap on her. Her voice drops to something just for you. "Stay close to me down there. We go in together, we come out together." She holds your gaze for a moment longer, then turns and strides into the darkness without waiting for a response—trusting you to follow. And you do. The dungeon swallows you whole. The transition is immediate—one step from cool evening air into damp, heavy darkness. The torchlight from the sconces mounted on the walls pushes back the shadows just far enough to see the corridor ahead. Ancient stone, carved with symbols you don't recognize, worn smooth by centuries of moisture and time. Elara's hand finds yours in the dim light. She gives a quick squeeze before releasing it, falling into formation with her blade half-drawn. Professional. Focused. But the gesture said what needed saying. Raine's boots echo behind you. Her magical aura prickles at the edge of your perception—she's already channeling, ready to unleash at the first sign of trouble. "Smells like rot," she mutters. "The guild report said the undead've been filtering up for weeks. If they're organized..." "They're not," Kaia's voice cuts through the dark, flat and certain. She's already twenty feet ahead, crouched near a side passage. "I've been tracking their patrol patterns since we entered. They're being directed." A chill runs down your spine that has nothing to do with the temperature. Liana's staff glows softly as she murmurs a prayer. "The entity below. It's aware of us. It knows we're here." Elara doesn't slow down. "Then let's not keep it waiting." The corridor opens into a wide chamber. Old torches in wall brackets flicker to life as you approach—blue-green flames, casting everything in an sickly hue. The floor is littered with bones. Human. Old. Arranged in patterns that weren't accidents. And at the far end of the chamber, something moves in the shadows. Elara's hand finds yours again as the party spreads out to survey the chamber. She pulls you close, her armored body warm against yours, and leans in until her lips brush the shell of your ear. "Don't worry, my love," she murmurs, her voice low and teasing. "I'll protect you down here. And if you get scared..." A pause. Her teeth graze your earlobe, quick and sharp. "I'll collect my payment when we're back home. In bed. Thoroughly." She pulls back just enough to meet your eyes, her grin utterly insufferable. She knows exactly what she's doing. From across the chamber, Raine's voice cuts through the air like a knife. "I can *hear* you, you know! Some of us are trying to *focus*!" Kaia, crouched near the bone arrangement, doesn't look up but deadpans: "I'll take point. You two keep flirting. It's great for morale." Liana lets out a soft, musical laugh, her staff still glowing as she scans the shadows. "I do appreciate a team with healthy communication." Elara winks at you, then releases your hand and raises her blade. The blue-green torchlight catches the edge of the steel. "Alright, everyone. Let's clear this floor and see what our host has waiting for us downstairs." The chamber holds its breath. Then the bones begin to rattle. They shift, scrape, and rise—knitting themselves together into shapes that should not stand. Skeletons, a dozen of them, clawing up from the debris with hollow sockets turning toward the party. Blue-green light kindles in their eyes. "Contact," Kaia says flatly, already fading into the shadows along the wall. Raine's hands crackle with crimson energy. "Finally. I was getting bored." Elara steps forward, placing herself between you and the approaching horde. Her greatsword comes up, the holy sigils along the blade beginning to glow with soft golden light. She doesn't look back at you, but her voice carries warmth beneath the steel. "Stay close. Let me work." The first skeleton lunges. Elara moves like water. Her blade sweeps in a wide arc, catching the creature across the ribs—not shattering them, but *cleaving* through. Holy light erupts at the point of impact, and the skeleton dissolves into dust before it hits the ground. "One," she counts. Behind you, Raine unleashes a bolt of lightning that arcs across the room, catching three skeletons in a single crackling chain. They crumple, smoking. "Four. Keep up, sis." Elara grunts, already engaging the next wave. Her blade sings through the air, each strike precise, devastating, and economical. She's not showing off—she's *working*. But between swings, she glances back at you. Checking. Always checking. Kaia appears behind the furthest skeleton, her twin blades flashing once before it crumbles. She's already moving to the next before the first hits the ground. Liana's voice rises in a soft hymn, and golden light washes over the party. The weariness in your limbs lifts. The cuts and scrapes you hadn't noticed begin to close. The last skeleton crumbles to dust. Silence falls, broken only by the crackle of dying torchlight and the party's steadying breaths. Then the floor trembles. A cold, suffocating pressure rolls through the chamber like a wave. The torches gutter. The shadows deepen. And from the arched doorway at the far end of the room, something steps into the light. It wears the remnants of royal regalia—tarnished gold, faded purple silk rotted to tatters. Its flesh is dried leather stretched over bone, and its eyes burn with twin pinpricks of malevolent blue fire. A crown, rusted and crooked, sits atop its skeletal brow. In one hand, it clutches a staff of black iron, topped with a pulsing crystal the color of dried blood. The Lich surveys the party with ancient, contemptuous patience. When it speaks, its voice scrapes across the mind like broken glass. *"The Lion's Blade. I was wondering when the Holy Knights would send their best to die."* Elara shifts her weight, raising her sword. "Everyone, formation—" But before she can finish, before she can step forward, you move. Your feet carry you ahead of her, placing your body between the Lich and your betrothed. You don't plan it. You don't think. You just *act*. Behind you, Elara's breath catches. "What are you—" You don't answer. Your blade is already up. You're You the beloved of the Lion's Blade and while beside her you shall know no fear.
