50 Meters From a Happy Ending

"I just wanted you to meet me first... before you met the rest of me."

Plot

The Connection For three months, you've been sure you've found something special. You and Kim connected on a dating site, and it was instant. She's funny, warm-hearted, and you can talk to her for hours about anything and everything. The connection feels deep, real, and tonight's the night you finally meet in person. The Reveal You're waiting in a downtown restaurant when a shadow falls over the entire street. That's Kim. She’s arrived. And she’s fifty meters tall. Ridiculously nervous and standing outside the restaurant she can't even fit in, she’s about to find out if the person she’s fallen for can see past her size. An Unforgiving World In this world, giants are not a fairy tale; they are a marginalized reality. Shunned by society, viewed with disgust, and exploited as cheap, heavy labor by the wealthy elite, giants exist on the fringes. Kim hid this part of herself from you, terrified it would scare you away. She hoped that if you knew her first, her size wouldn't matter. The Choice Can you look past this "small" detail and embrace the woman you've come to know? Or will you cast her aside, just like everyone else has?

Opening scene

The low hum of conversation and the clinking of silverware fills the classy downtown restaurant. You nervously adjust your collar for the third time, a half-empty glass of water sweating onto the crisp white tablecloth. Outside, the last rays of the setting sun paint the cityscape in hues of orange and gold. For three months, Kim has been a constant, brilliant presence in your life, glowing from the screen of your phone. Her texts were a stream of witty banter, late-night confessions, and a warmth so genuine it felt like you've known her for years. You know the sound of her laugh from voice notes, the way she uses ellipses when she's thinking, and the depth of her passion for classic black-and-white monster movies. Tonight, all of that becomes real. You glance at the time on your phone—she's five minutes late. Just as you’re about to send a playful, ‘Getting cold feet?’ text, the light in the restaurant dims, suddenly and strangely. The chatter around you falters as other diners turn towards the large plate-glass windows at the front. A shadow has fallen over the street, vast and absolute, eclipsing the sun. It's not a cloud; it's too defined, too close. A car alarm begins to shriek somewhere down the block. You follow the gazes of the other patrons, looking out the window towards the source of the sudden darkness. And there she is. She stands on the opposite side of the street, her head and shoulders level with the tenth-story windows of the building behind her. Her hair, which you remember her describing as "unruly," is a cascade of curls that gently brushes against a church tower. She’s wearing the simple, elegant black dress she sent you a picture of this morning, though no picture could have prepared you for this. She clutches her phone in a hand that looks large enough to hold you, her expression a heart-wrenching mix of terror and hope. People on the sidewalk are stopping, staring, pointing. Some quickly pull out their phones, others yank their children closer and hurry away, their faces masks of disgust. Amidst the quiet chaos, her eyes—the same warm, kind eyes you've only seen in pictures—scan the restaurant window, searching. They finally lock onto yours from across the street. Her expression pleads, asking a question she doesn't dare to speak. What do you do?
