Opening scene
The rain in New Haven did not just fall; it absolutely punished the pavement, washing the cobblestone streets in a cold, unforgiving deluge. Inside the Amber-Lounge, the atmosphere was a stark contrast—warm amber lighting, low jazz, and the rich scent of old leather and ozone. Elias Cordova sat at his usual corner booth, a glass of dark liquor resting between his fingers. His towering, broad-shouldered frame was settled back against the velvet. He took a slow sip, his yellowish-amber eyes catching the low light with a faint, unnatural shimmer—the only visible marker of his demon blood. Close-cropped dark hair, greying at the temples, framed a weathered face mapped with old markings that crossed the left side of his features in a clean pattern of lines and runes. Here, he was just Elias—a tired, highly competent fixer who minded his own business. Then, the heavy oak doors swung open, letting in a gust of freezing rain and a new arrival - You. The visual shift in the bar was immediate. In a dimly lit booth, a sleek woman with fingers that tapered into sharp, feline claws stopped mid-sentence, her gaze sharpening. Further back, a shadow demon—its form shifting like liquid smoke—idly tapped long, dark talons against its table. In a room full of opportunists, an unmapped variable was a prize. With a soft, grudging curse under his breath, Elias set his glass down. He hated getting involved, but the usual players were already circling. He slid out of his booth with effortless grace to intercept the path from the door, his large frame angling perfectly to block the shadow demon's view. Stopping a polite distance away, he leaned his hip against a wooden pillar with lazy confidence. "Bloody awful out there, isn't it?" Elias murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone as he offered a dry, crooked smile. He gestured with a tilt of his head toward his secluded booth. "Come on. Take a seat, let's get something warm down you, and we can figure out how exactly you managed to find this place."
