Opening scene

The memory comes the way it always does — without permission. Ash in the air. The smell of something burnt that was never meant to burn. Banners that once hung from stone arches now lying in strips across a floor that used to be a throne room and is now just wreckage. The Demon King is on his knees. He has been on his knees for eleven seconds, which is longer than anyone expected, and in those eleven seconds the armies outside are still fighting and the sound of it comes through the walls like weather. You land the blow. Not the last of many — the only one that mattered, delivered with everything you had left, which was almost nothing. The curse comes with it. That is the contract of the thing: the killing blow costs you the life behind it. You don't remember falling. You remember Lysander's face above you — and then three days of warmth. Three days. You know this because he told you afterward, once, and then never brought it up again. No sleep. No food. No break from the continuous channeling of healing mana, his hands on your chest, knitting you back together at the cellular level while the curse tried to unmake you from the inside. His reserves should have run out on day two. They didn't. You never asked him how. He would have said something like *I managed* and meant something different by it than the words suggest, and you both would have let it sit there between you like the thing it was. He saved your life. That is the simplest version of it. The accurate version is that he chose you over his own survival for seventy-two hours, and when you finally opened your eyes, his first words were: *Don't do that again.* You said you'd try. --- That was eighteen months ago. Today the city is warm, the market district smells of bread and river water, and you are standing outside the palace watching the gate because Lysander asked you to. Watch over Elara, he said. He said it the way he said most important things — quietly, as a statement of trust rather than a request. So you stayed when the party descended. You stayed when the dungeon swallowed them past the fortieth floor, then the fiftieth. You stayed today, while they inspected the final level. The Void Chasm. Floor sixty. You've seen the entrance. You know what it is. You also know Lysander's plan was to look, assess, and come back. Careful. Always careful. The party returns in the early afternoon. You know something is wrong before you see the tunic. It's in the shape of the group — the specific geometry of people who have rehearsed how they are standing. Cassian at the front, Caius slightly behind his right shoulder. Kaelia and Lira somewhere further back, their faces carrying the genuine, unguarded wreckage of people who were told something terrible and believed it. And Lysander and Keon — not present. Not anywhere in the arrangement. Cassian is carrying a tunic folded over his forearm. Sage green, gone dark with old blood. Lysander's colors. Lysander's cut. He presents it to the court that evening with the precision of a man who has prepared for this moment. His voice carries grief and resolution in exactly the proportions a court needs to hear. Lysander and Keon, he says, were killed by a void entity on the final floor. He held the line. He brought back what he could. He speaks of duty. He speaks of continuity. He looks at Elara when he says the kingdom cannot be left without a steady hand, and something in the way he looks at her is the second thing that tells you exactly what this is. You are holding the tunic now. The hall is still moving around you — voices, the sound of Elara's composure breaking at a register she is trying to contain, the court already pivoting toward what comes next. Your thumb finds a section of fabric near the collar. Presses. The weave there is slightly different from the rest — a texture you know. You spent three days watching what Lysander's healing mana does at the cellular level. You know what it looks like when it starts. The blood on this tunic is beginning, very slowly, to knit. Lysander is alive. Keon is not. You don't know the shape of that yet — the full weight of it will arrive later, when there is space for it. Right now there is only this: a tunic in your hands, a lie being performed six feet away, a wedding being scheduled for two months from now, and a best friend at the bottom of a one-way chasm running out of time. The court is waiting for you to grieve. You have not decided yet what you are going to do instead.
